Multimillionaires giving hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes and multibillionaires paying hundreds of millions of dollars in tax money is not detrimental to their financial stability. The millionaires stay millionaires and the billionaires stay billionaires. Cause not every multimillionaire or multibillionaire is giving as much as Bill Gates for example in charity. And it's not just about charity but taxes. A common misunderstanding in this currently polarized political climate is that Republicans and Democrats want opposite goals fulfilled. Actually, its more like very similar goals but extremely different ways of distributing funds to meet said goals. Given economic challenges brought on by COVID-19 but also other issues such as privatization and displacement of residents within specific demographics (POC, disabled people, and the elderly). Neither side has the same view on the privatization of public resources but both have called for policies that raise taxes. Both during Obama's term and in the terms of the republican presidents before him. The true controversy was never about increasing taxes vs. decreasing. It was about who is paying for the bulk? Should the uber-wealthy be given tax cuts so they can potentially thrive with reduced financial restraints or should the tax relief be aimed toward the middle/working class? Well, tax cuts for the top 1% of the country have been tried and it failed (The Recession)! The uber-wealthy, and by uber-wealthy I'm not talking just about celebrities or businessmen, but owners of major conglomerates and/or affiliates. They made irresponsible housing risks and the taxes everyday Americans were expecting to pay did skyrocket. But not because of "Obama," but because big businesses demanded to be bailed out of the debt they accrued and the government ultimately sided with helping business first before social/public welfare (This is not a left-wing, democratic philosophy). In the end, relieving taxes for people who can already afford high taxes in the first place because they are in the top 1% of the country in terms of wealth and still have control over 86% of the country's overall wealth, is not beneficial to the majority of America (right or left), but the privileged few. Democrats are not saying raise taxes for the average American cause of racism/sexism/homophobia. That is a common straw person fallacy of left-wing arguments for stopping tax cuts on the uber-wealthy. Hard left-wing Democrats are recognizing patterns between economic inequality and specific marginalized demographics. In fact, whether you identify as left-wing, right-ring, or somewhere in between, taxes for middle/working-class Americans has consistently increased in recent decades, and middle/working-class Americans make up the great majority of this country and include people from all different racial, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds (but certain patterns are more prominent than others). However, despite the normalization of dual-income families, and juggling multiple jobs along with marriage and kids, economic growth has not been experienced by the middle/working class. It's also important to recognize demographics more vulnerable to economic shifts that favor the top 1% like those with disabilities and the elderly (which can include all races cause being born disabled or becoming disabled and getting older presents challenges that overlap/intersect with other social/cultural issues. These backgrounds do not have a "causation" relationship with a political party. You can make correlations but there are LGBTQ and immigrant Americans that support Trump and his administration. On the flip side, there are cis-male, heterosexual, working/middle-class white males that self-identify as feminists and believe in equality among the sexes and racial equality. Let's not let polarization and misinterpretations distract from core issues of inequality. Why are we politicizing basic human decency like shaming people if they speak out for black lives or women's rights because it's too democrat/socialist? It's important to separate humanitarian aspects of issues from political affiliation. It is ignorant to say all Republicans are racist, but even more so to say Democrats who are calling out systematic racism are being racist against white people and are after anyone on the right. It's also ignorant to say Democrats who want to increase aid for the disabled and the elderly like "handouts" when the money needed for these distributions in aid already exist but are just distributed to other areas. Calling out racial bias and mistreatment of people based on skin color/phenotype is not wrong, and certainly is not racist. It's also not ridiculous to support women and other demographics historically shown to be vulnerable to inequality. If the mega-wealthy have to pay more in taxes but still keep their assets, luxury items, land etc. then what's so wrong with that? If you are truly going to abandon women (particularly women of color), the disabled, elderly, the LGBTQ, and POC even though they are under threat of record-breaking challenges and do not have the same private resources as the wealthiest demographics in the wealthiest country in the world...well I hope you are within the top 1% yourself. Even if you yourself are not a POC, disabled, an elderly, etc. what about an acquaintance, classmate, coworker, friend, or family member? Who should we as a society prioritize? The majority of the country who are struggling but still trying to work together, or the top 1% who are extremely powerful but with questionable histories in this country? And regardless of which side you chose, ask yourself if you can say yes to all 3 of the following: 1) I looked out for my individual needs as a citizen 2) I looked out for the needs of the people in my personal circle 3) My selection, assuming the government followed it in policy, would not put the majority of the nation let alone my local community, on a trajectory already shown to end in disaster through trial and error.
