Canada doesn't allow convicted felons to enter. The next G7 meeting after Trump takes office is scheduled to be held here. I'm sure Trump thinks we will make an exception because he's president. I believe that US tariffs will be good for Canada in the long run, though very painful in the short run. I am very proudly "Canada First", and for my entire adult life I have advocated for Canada to let go of the US skirt. We are far too dependent on the US for trade. We have given up too much to America,, and its time to take it back. We need to invest heavily in our own aerospace, communication, entertainment, and automotive industries. We need to invest heavily in our defence industry, and we need to invest heavily in the energy sector. We just signed a Free Trade deal with Indonesia, the 4th most populous country in the world, and we are pursuing trade deals with a variety of other countries around the world and have been since the first Trump term. We have access to one of the largest oil fields on the planet, but unlike Ontario we don’t have a pipeline going south. Our oil is shipped in tankers and new trading partners are already being made. The only reason Canada sends so much crude south is because we don’t have refineries in Canada, because we’ve never needed them. There have been pushes for the federal government to invest in Canadian refineries to take out that middleman, which is the US, who refines the crude and sells it back to Canada. If that happens then we won’t need to send crude south. Americans seem to not realize that we also have two international ports, one on each ocean, that ships goods directly to Europe and Asia and vice versa. Canada is resource and commodity rich and exports more than it imports…

I'm a Canadian in largely Conservative Alberta. Don't put too much stock into Opposition leader Poilievre's hyperbolic grandstanding. He does that ALL the time, and doesn't currently have much legislative power in the House of Commons. We'll have a federal election in several months, and he could become Prime Minister, but there's absolutely no guarantee of that because his Conservatives don't have much support in Quebec, nor do Trudeau's Liberals. Long story short: We absolutely don't know who will be governing Party by the end of Spring 2025, when Trump will be very actively setting the tone for American foreign policy and trade. But it's important to know that much of the oil production in Canada is owned by American companies, who will not be quiet if their corporations are threatened by a 25% import tax. Nor will Americans want to pay 25% more for gasoline and everything that depends on it.

Oh he already did that back in the beginning of covid when the Florida governor was too busy denying covid existed so that it didn't affect tourism. Then when he finally came to his senses when Covid was running rampant, he found out he couldn't get 'HIS PPE' (the PPE he never bothered to order) because he waited so long and demand was so high due to shortages. So Trump forced 3M not to honour the existing PPE orders that had been placed by blocking all exports of PPE. Canadians died because of this disgusting backstabbing. I'm Canadian and can see us SLOWLY moving more and more trade over to the EU (I think their population is around 450M) and maybe China (I believe we just bought 6 big LNG tankers from China) and maybe getting better acquainted with Mexico, and it will be hard for us also, but there is a damn good chance this possible problem could go well past Trump's "4 years". Even if this is Trump blowing hot air, it may be time to put some of our eggs in other baskets - but yes, everyone is going to hurt. What is the old saying “Trust takes years to build, seconds to break, and forever to repair”

As a Canuck I agree. This constant flip-flopping on trade policies every 4 years has become real tiresome. It's impossible to rely on a trading partner when there's limited continuity between the revolving door U.S. party politics. And it's difficult for a nation to make long term plans when trade agreements signed by one party are simply ignored or torn up by the next.

Our deputy Prime Minister, Christia Freeland’s tweet yesterday pointed out that Canada supplies 60% of the crude oil that the US imports. The US may be energy independent in terms of total production , but they produce light crude, which is not the same as the heavy crude that Canada sells and what is what central and western United States refines to make their gasoline out of.

@@carlyar5281 And it would take a few years to convert those refineries over to process light crude. And you get less fuel oil out of light crude. So less heating oil, diesel, fuel oil for ships, etc.
