Great video. I was charged $600 to do a small 4x6 patch years ago. I will be doing this on my own after watching your video. Thank you.

Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. I started to try to do more how to videos for that very reason. People charge way too much for things so I will be adding more how to style videos so everyone can save some money.

4x6 with saw cuts and hot asphalt properly compacted is worth $600 easy. The most expensive job is one that has to be redone. You'll figure that out later.

I just did this project today at one of our rental properties. I removed all the Asphalt and added some all purpose sand as the base then put down 10 bags of the QAR making sure the edges had sufficient asphalt. I will seal it in a couple of days. Thanks for the video.

Nice looking patch. I hope it holds up. Sucks when we spend time and money and products that end up failing. I want to try rapid set but I’m glad to see this so I can compare the two ideas. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching! So far 2 years later it is still holding up. I think cutting out the area truly helps as there is nowhere for the asphalt to push away from. I did see that rapid set but it was a little too expensive for me to try out.

From my 15 years experience in the construction industry I would advise you to use a wide chisel in the machine and start from the outside working inwards. Maybe also have a hose running softly to stop dust.
@BrianWingard
@BrianWingard 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I did end up using a wider chisel on my next project. I only had smaller ones at the time for this video. Great idea on the dust, I usually do this when cutting concrete but should have done this here also.

just suggestion, you need to add some liquid asphalt to the edges so the edges are waterproof otherwise the patch continues to grow

Your supposed to use SS1 or Coalus. However that garbage cold patch is so full of tar you dont need it. However, if you find any asphalt on the side of the road from a hwy job, or even some old broken asphalt, heat it up with a tiger torch or even a barrel over a fire pit. Way better quality and a permanent fix. Either heat your tamper or spade with the tiger or keep it oiled with diesel or used motor oil so the hot asphalt does not stick to the tamper. PS. that so called asphalt patch he's using is garbage. Its all the same size nuggets for city work crews to toss in a hole and allow passing cars to tamp it down. It never really hardens. Plus you cant feather it. You have to do saw cuts. If you get normal asphalt you can rake the larger stones into the middle, heat the edges and have a nice feathered patch without the saw cuts. Whatever. This guy is doing a fine job for an office worker.

@@trickywoo5165 If you do choose to use cold patch, the only brand to use is called Sakrete Asphalt Patch. It has a mix of stones and its very sandy. Thats important when your feathering the edges. However theres lots of road work going on that will 100% have piles of left over asphalt thats not compacted and very easy to break apart and reheat. Carry a shovel and 5 gallon pails in your trunk.

Hey Brian, good video! How long before you can drive on the new patch?
@BrianWingard

Thanks for watching. I usually wait a full 24 hours and then check after that. Usually if it is really really hot I may give it an extra day to start to really harden.

I thought I saw a cold patch threshold ramp to your garage... did you do that?
@BrianWingard
@BrianWingard 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I did do the threshold ramp for the garage. I should have done a video on that as well. The key is building it up in layers. I would add about 2 inches of asphalt and shape it then tamp is a LOT! Then add more layer little by little and keep tamping. The main part you want to truly focus on is where the car or truck tires will be so it does not push out over time. Hoope this helps!

Thanks for watching. If it is soft then it was not packed enough. Usually in a few days it is near as solid as the other asphalt and I have been driving over this with no issues. Cutting out the hole prevents it from spreading so it stays solid.

Just a suggestion is a thing called fast forward 2x 3x 4x 5x all you need to do is explain and then speed up when you're working We don't need to watch 40 minutes of something that can be compressed to 5 minutes...
@BrianWingard
@BrianWingard Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Actually I found most people looking up how to videos have never done it before so even though the video is long viewers often watch any particular section they are unsure of how to do and can watch a majority of the process. Most people who have general knowledge of the process just skip through. Its easier to have the extra video than not so no one is left guessing like most quick videos that do not show it all and explain it quick.
