Finally! I have been waiting to see how this breaks you, I remember reading the books and almost crying on the bus, it is literally heart wrenching watching War of Underworld especially when backed with knowledge of the novel

So in my opinion they slightly altered and tone down Cardinal death scene, but main reason she can't atta k and admitted defeat was because Cardinal acknowledged the sword Golem as a human meaning her fluctlight would not allow her to harm them. She exchanged her life to allow the rulid trio to escape and hopefully find a way to beat her. The problem was that the anime cut out the whole scene where cardinal explained the seal of the right eye, because the seal impedes their thoughts and because of the taboo index, they are severely bound by a moral code to not break the rules so as long as the golem is human, Cardinal cannot attack, she can severely weaken it but their chances of winning was low hence why she offered herself as sacrifice

I don't know if Brian and Steph will read this, but Kawahara Reki the author actually wanted to change Eugeo fate, he thought it over and over and ultimately decided that to deny his death from the Web Novel was something he couldn't do, it was part of Eugeo story and a form of respect for the character. As for Krito, he has a form of self loathing, hate, guilt and ptsd that was more evident in the novel whilst the anime is left to interpretation but eugeo fate is a huge, huge, HUGE factor to Kirito. As for Black Swordsman Kirito, kirito actually hate thats side of him, he tries his best to disassociate himself from that image but it is his strongest Incarnation and his other self that haunts him. He never asked to be a hero, he went so far as to avoid dual blading, Kirito becoming the black swordsman is a sign that he can never get over sao, its his strongest self that no longer exist as he never transfer it to alo and the self he doesn't want to be

Great reaction! In regards to Cardinal's sacrifice, since she is a program designed to follow certain rules she is incapable of killing the human citizens of Underworld. So when she realized what the golem was made of, she literally could not kill it due to programming. So her next best option was to bargain, and give strength to Kirito, Alice, and Eugeo to fight on since their sprits were broken

few things to comment on about these episodes. 1. Cardinal offers herself up because of the system's restrictions on even Quinella. She believes that if Quinella is under the influence of the system, then she cannot possible go against her own word. Sadly, this is not true because Quinella had plenty of loopholes. You see some of this "system intervention" in early Alicization, too. The people of that world have no chance of ever stealing, killing, or anything of that sort, because they are simply told by law not to. Quinella has to still follow her own rules, since she was given them when she was little. Even Administrator could not break those rules. 2. Eugeo was indeed preserved by the Blue Rose Sword freezing him. Sadly, there were not enough spacial resources to heal him. 3. Administrator was able to replicate all the old SAO skills because of the Underworld being run off of The Seed's engine. Similarly, she had zero clue what any of Kirito's dual-wielding was, because that was a unique skill coded into SAO, but not included in The Seed. 4. Administrator totally could have escaped and taken over the irl world, good thing a certain combustible clown was still around. 5. at the end of the episode, Asuna does not actually come into the Underworld. That is a hallucination made by Kirito's fluctlight as it was hit with the power surge. the first time i saw this, I cried. It was the first time an anime's made me cry, but SAO had my guard down. Reading through the light novel brought the tears a second time. Call me a fanboy, but SAO is one of the best anime out there, and it's here to stay. Sure, it may not have Fate's animation, or Re:Zero levels of story, but this shown has grown with us, and gradually, those who stuck with it have learned to let these flaws by. It is SAO, it has flaws, but it can have these flaws BECAUSE it's SAO. Thank you, see you in WoU.

The last shot of Asuna there is the only strong connection of Kirito that he can't never forget. Asuna didn't enter the underworld. Also in the LN, the hair of Quinella turned into something like needles and Kirito felt like it pierced him. The attack in the anime is a rip-off of that attack. Cardinal couldn't fight because the taboo index will try to stop her from disobeying her morals along with personal feelings. Also that yellow incarnate eyes are always anime original in sao, not provided in the LN.

I love your reactions, but just to clear up some things: When Kirito’s eyes turn golden yellow it just means he is using his incarnation at its max. It’s not god mode. Kirito used Incarnation to turn into the Black Swordsman. Bodies don’t convert into sacred resources immediately. Sometimes the bodies stay. Yes, Administrator is capable of using her hair in battle.

Nobody noticed that the finale battle with Quinella is a reference from Aincrad boss fight with Heathcliff. In first a very important sword in season broke (Eugeo´s sword and Dark Repulser from Liz), Kirito´s partner died just after that (Asuna and Eugeo) even the scene with Alice put herself in middle to rescue Kirito is a reference when Asuna did the same, then Kirito used the sword of his partner death (Eugeo´s red sword and the Asuna´s rapier) to himself, lost his principal weapon in his right hand (Elucidator and Night Sky Sword) and at last did the finale attack with her sword´s partner.

I just wanted to let you guys know. Quinella literally could not break a swear made on her fluctlight. It's explained in the Light Novels, but left out from the anime, which makes the sacrifice seem much more futile... If there is one important thing that that sacrifice accomplished, it was buying time. Quinella couldn't attack them until Cardinal broke the oath by fighting back. So they had the free time necessary for Eugeo to figure it out and for them to initiate the art.

It's funny how in the first episode Kirito used "kisama" as a honourable reference to the knight, because it used to be a good expression but in this episode Cardinal used "kisama" about Quinella which modernly is an insult.

Quinella is dead, she's not coming back. Death is permanent in this series. Personally I love the fact that Quinella did herself in. Sealing off the space so Cardinal was trapped meant there weren't enough resources to heal herself, and leading Chudelkin on sealed her fate before she could escape. She fused herself with the Cardinal system. Everyone says she's not human anymore because she's shown and stated multiple times in volume 14 to not be human anymore. But the most telling is that when Kirito stabs her she doesn't even bleed blood anymore. She burns up from Chudelkin's flames before making it out of Underworld, she's dead 100% and not coming back. Her fluctlight is deleted. Chudelkin was pure incarnation when he final reaches her, he doesn't even have a physical form anymore. He's not even coherent, believing her insults to be confessions of acceptance finally.
