I had an old Statistics prof in undergrad tell me about the problems with h-index and impact factors and perverse incentives it creates. At the time, I thought it was just and old man griping, but more and more I'm agreeing with him

The problem is the requirement to publish. Sure, h index, citation index, impact factor, all will promote generating papers on hot topics that you think others will cite but the main issue is the requirement of universities to constantly push for more publications and more reach. There's a lot of junk science and junk papers being published with half baked ideas, that aren't even new ,reviewed by people who are not experts simply because the culture relies so heavily on number of publications. Everybody from university, to professors, to employers, to other PhDs I'll use number of publications as a metric of success and that's what needs to stop.

I was looking at economics journals and hate that the editor can take the submission fees and potentially reject your article without even sending it to review.

Academic papers no longer exist to be read, they exist to be counted. Until anyone bothers to read them again, this problem only gets worse.

Eye opening. Thank you. I think a more general problem is the slow ratcheting down of intrinsic and extrinsic moral standards. As you mentioned, the good guys and gals struggle to compete. Mostly, people have a moral framework that relates to the general community. A good girl brought up in/ competing in society/ organisations with low average morality (rule bending, rule breaking, etc) will be less good than the same person raised in more moral circumstances. I think the editorial manipulations and non repeatability problems in research stem from an increase in 'moral flexibility'. This problem occurs within academia, public service, and elsewhere. For some, it is the end justifying the means, others see it as 'gamesmanship', but mostly it is about varying levels of dark triad behaviour allowed greater expression within decaying moral standards, increased complexity, and in group protection. Keep up the good work, Andy.

Bravo, Andy! Peer review manipulation has been a touchy subject lately. Reminds me of the Rockefeller foundation of the early 1900s.

Thank you so much for sharing, as a young academic with integrity, these things are worrisome.. but also not surprising given how much money there is to make

I don't think that the true issue is related to h-index cause in my country we did not have it, but still low-qaulity publications did not stop. What I consider one of the core issues is that too many people are given the opportunity to become PhD and do research which should not be the case as doing research is not mechanical production of papers but leaving legacy like Newton, Einstein, Chomsky which are few and forever. There are more PhD and science producers than science consumers, and this imbalance creates an economic crisis which has to be fixed in a way to justify the investments during PhD. Also, let's not forget how egocentric academicians are-each opportunity to see their names on something adds up to their greedy personas and egos. Doing science is not a way to become rich and science shouldnt be a means to feel prestigous or superior while we see the opposite due to fraud and corrupt networking. Once these two become clear, less will get engaged in academia.

In 20 years as a researcher and many of those as an editor or associate editor, I have never experienced this? Must be very dogy journals we avoid.

Sadly no funding to publish our papers and pay the APC fees. Just enough to generate some preliminary data. Post PhD life is a hell for me doing unpaid editorial background services for the society.

Are these Publishers in Bell's predatory journal and publisher list? If so then the Unis' I have been associated dont usually count them in your KPI or research outputs or at least discourage them through the University research output officer who checks all submissions

@@hans-joachimmarseilleofafr3929 Done MANY reviews for their aviation journals and was a guest editor for one issue. Never was offered a "bribe." Only thing they would do is offer a reduction in APC charges for some authors who were short of funds.

I think there is a lot of pressure in academia to have your name on a load of papers. Students who are coming up to application for PhDs often feel the need to have something other than a grade to set them apart. If they have a Bachelors and no masters for whatever reason, the option of "investing" and suddenly having a vast collection of "contributions" to their name is attractive. How you solve that? I have no clue

The h-index, the for-profit publishers, and the burden on good researchers are all part of a broader issue, which is the neoliberalization of academia. If people did not feel like they were pressured to compete for their very survival, many of these issues would not exist. The bad incentives are created by cut-throat capitalism. For example, the h-index is an easy metric to eliminate candidates for jobs, etc. if you are bothered only by the bottom line. For-profit publishing is a self-explanatory effect of the profit motive invading science. And, of course, it is those researchers that strive to be both moral and productive that suffer because the demands of the job are exponentially higher than what they were. It is no wonder there is an epidemic of burnout in academia.

First of all, I maybe enjoyed this video a little too much; fantastic storytelling 😂 I am not comfortable with the thought of living in a world where we need private publishers. I wish that all publishers/journals, even those that operate as businesses, were affiliated with credible universities/organisations in each discipline to ensure academic accountability. Editors and reviewers can then be vetted and appointed by these institutions. On the other side , academics should strengthen the moral code of their research students. Emphasise the usage of reporting guidelines (check the equator network) as a common practice and strengthen their critical appraisal skills. Bury bad papers so they will not be cited.
