Sadly, a project of this size is unlikely the future. Akira is well remembered now, but in it's time it was an expensive flop. You also remember that Akira was a HUGE project in its day. If you pay attention to the credits, they must have had half the animation studios in Japan doing in-between work at one point or another.

To anyone who has never done any work pictorial art yet is still criticising this masterpiece: check ALL the frames. Every single frame is an absurdly complex picture to draw on its own. Look at the angles, the cut, the perspective. Can you imagine yourself animating that with the same amount of fluidity, making characters feel almost like they have a physical weight and shape?

Amazing video and captures the essence of the film. We see that Tetsuo is more driven and hungry than Kanada because he is less talented and not so naturally strong or confident. It is this drive and hunger for power that proves his undoing. Yet, it is he and not Kanada who ascends to godhood - he gets what he desires, at great cost. I think what I love the most is that Tetsuo's redemption is implied, but not shown. He is fated to spend an eternity in the care of a loving and compassionate God. It is even possible that he is Akira; that Akira is his future self. Thus he learns and develops through both his own cruelty and his own love; his drive is born of self-denial yet it leads ultimately to self-acceptance: Self-Realisation.
