@@Neko.VirtualIt actually is that hard. A lot of anime from this era was hand-drawn, frame by frame. And that's also including the backgrounds and assets needed. It's easier to replicate this style today, but back then, it was **HARD.**

Sadly, a project of this size is unlikely the future. Akira is well remembered now, but in it's time it was an expensive flop. You also remember that Akira was a HUGE project in its day. If you pay attention to the credits, they must have had half the animation studios in Japan doing in-between work at one point or another.

To anyone who has never done any work pictorial art yet is still criticising this masterpiece: check ALL the frames. Every single frame is an absurdly complex picture to draw on its own. Look at the angles, the cut, the perspective. Can you imagine yourself animating that with the same amount of fluidity, making characters feel almost like they have a physical weight and shape?

The only animated part is the characters and cars and such, usually the backgrounds are beautiful art that sets as backdrop, there will be lights moving or something in the distance to make it seem like it's not a drawing.

Work like this takes multiple teams of animators and cinematographers and lighting directors. The amount of work the put into anime in the past rivals the efforts done my major blockbuster Hollywood hits. All in the name of attention to detail. This is why anime is so deep, and dirty. ;)

I think we feel attracted to the past and the 80/90's because back then they were so fascinated by the future. We look back on that young, naive world because we see the speculation in their eyes, the fascination for sheer possibility, and we wonder if things really could have turned out different.

lol. as someone who grew up in the 80s/90s, I can assure you we were no more fascinated by the future than any other generation. Escapism, through cinema in particular, is a long standing American tradition. And if you think we were naive in the 80s and 90s, during the height of the cold war, then I'd suggest you read a little bit more about those times.

Amazing video and captures the essence of the film. We see that Tetsuo is more driven and hungry than Kanada because he is less talented and not so naturally strong or confident. It is this drive and hunger for power that proves his undoing. Yet, it is he and not Kanada who ascends to godhood - he gets what he desires, at great cost. I think what I love the most is that Tetsuo's redemption is implied, but not shown. He is fated to spend an eternity in the care of a loving and compassionate God. It is even possible that he is Akira; that Akira is his future self. Thus he learns and develops through both his own cruelty and his own love; his drive is born of self-denial yet it leads ultimately to self-acceptance: Self-Realisation.

This was a fantastic track, I need more!! Also near-future setting is so much better than distant future. How I wish I lived in such a world (without all the mutants of course...nah it wouldn't be the same).I want to live in a city with rain slick streets bathed in neon light.

Crazy how music can change the vibe of a scene so much. With music like this the scene feels very fun and flashy like a 80s movie but when you actually watch the movie the time is way different. The music is ominous and unorthodox sounding and the scene feels more brutal

Computers are a good and in some cases quick way to create cartoons and anime, but such a lot was lost when the switch was made from hand drawn to computer drawn. Fluidity of movement and depth of appearance being good examples. This actually gives a 3D impression, mang cartoons and anime these days have a plain 2D quality.
