You never address things like how hard it is to do this, you make it sound easy. I have 9 Ebay accounts and several with over 10K feedback so it is easy to sell but for someone with no account, they are not going to sign up and get the same amount of money selling sets, at least not right away. You also have to know how to sell on the internet. Its not like you just buy a few sets. Let them sit under your bed and next year cha ching triple your money LOL. You leave out a lot of cost like shipping boxes and other stuff that you have to factor in. Storage is big. I use to use storage places but now it is cheaper to rent a house for storage. There is a lot more to that but to really make money you need more space other than a closet. You always compare it to the stock market but when you sell a stock you do not have to deal with idiots who want to return your stock because there is a dent on the box HAHA. I mean I could go on and on. Can you make a video about the negative side? Or are you afraid to push away people from your channel? It seems you give a false sense of hope to gain more followers but it could help if you were more honest with them. Don't get me wrong, I think it is all well worth it. Lego is booming and seven years ago I felt like I was late getting into it. I see people that say that now and I just tell them I said the same back in the day and so will people 10 years from now. Lego is here to stay :)

He is not the only one doing this. There are practical hundreds of channel teaching people how to "invest" in bitcoin, baseball cards, video games, and other collectibles. Unfortunately everyone wants to get rich quick without putting in the research and the work and find out the hard way when they realized the opportunity cost associated with selling stuff on ebay, for example, the 15% fees to ebay, the cost of shipping and packaging, and cost for something like a label printer, weight scale, and shipping boxes, and of course time and stress associated with returns. In fact, with the new law requiring ebay to issue 1099K to anyone who sold for more than $600 worth of goods, now there is another of unavoidable cost. (before it was 20K so you can avoid reporting the sale on your tax return)

Just a thought here Shane. That LEGO sales chart as you call "the demand" may quiet possibly be skewed by the thousands upon thousands of new LEGO resellers all over the world buying a shit ton more LEGO after watching the hundreds upon hundreds of LEGO investing videos.

We're not even a tiny blip on that chart. I've been hearing it since Brick Bucks began almost 2 years ago... That talking about it on the KZbin will kill the game. To be honest, since then my ROIs on Lego have only gone up, not down. If it was becoming over supplied we should be seeing the appreciation slow down considerably, and it's simply not happening. Tons of the 2021 retired sets are shooting for the moon just months into retirement

I got back into lego as an afol in 2017. What I like most is buying used lots. Sort them and sell most of it again as used sets. This year I started to get an interest in lego as an investment buying new sets for selling later. I have had some small succeses, but 90 % of my investment is still waiting for tlg to retire them. I think my biggest mistake as abeginner is that I got tempted by good deals not thinking about the retiring dates. So I got too much money just sitting and waiting the next couple of years. It is ok though i am learning by doing 😊

As someone who's investing in the stock market, passive ETF's and LEGO, it's comical to me that investing in LEGO would be considered more work. It's easy to pick out good sets or buy the UCS sets the year before they retire. Even for passive trading, it's more work to diversify your portfolio, research stock, manage costs and, if you don't use homebanking, setting up for a brokerage you trust. LEGO investment is more work in the sense of shipping these boxes when you do sell them. Good video, though the most-raised obstacle I've heard isn't mentioned here: declaring this as an income. I limit my investments so that taxes cannot consider this a professional activity - I buy only one of each set so that they can be considered for personal use. Nobody's likely to get caught and pay fines, but I'd like to not pay taxes at all, making the investment more worthwhile than the dividends I pay 30% taxes on.

I use Amazon, Target, etc. boxes I get from buying Lego and then just cut them down to fit the particular set I'm selling. You don't want a bunch of empty space or your shipping cost will be higher. Great vid & love your content mate. Signed up for the boot camp. I must say my main thing I’m trying to figure out is how to go about this the best way as I live in aus. Shipping costs are the biggest issue it seems. From looking at bricklink it’s almost unusable to buy sets from there unless it’s an aus seller which is rare. Shipping just makes it completely unviable & may as well just buy local. Curious to hear about this topic from you at some point as never heard it addressed. Brick link does seem to favour usa considerably.

This is a great video! Yes you can do it in the UK I have been doing it for about 15 years but using the extra money as a way to increase my collection rather than making a living at it but there is a lot of money to be made. it's all about recognising what has potential which most of time tends to be the most obvious popular set like the Creator Expert or UCS Star Wars sets . But yes start off small just a few hundred pounds pick carefully looking good sets in the sales. and one more thing look for sales of smaller sets of popular brands like Harry potter and star wars that go on as much as half price that you can just spend £10-£30 on because that small £15 gamble can really pay off in say 3 years when it's retired . I'm always looking for smaller set that are on clearance. I have very often bought something for say £10 on clearance sale that I have sold 3 years later for £50 -£60 . I recently got the 501st battle pack in Salisburys for £12 a set (usially £25) that's a really popular set and I will be very surprised after a few years of retirement this doesn't shoots up in price. Keep up the great videos it's good advice 🙂

@Brick Bucks, I have been investing in Lego for 2 years. Happy to say my strategic purchases are paying off. I have also been collecting vintage LEGO. When I say vintage I mean -sets released between 1975 and 1980. It's been hard to get good reliable valuations on these older sets. Any ideas what I should do? I generally try and buy the naff sets that are going to have a limited shelf life because lego sometimes misread their fans and releases something that is never going to sell. I think these types of sets will rocket in value because they will be so rare in 5 years. You gave an example of the Star Wars helmet as one that has literally doubled in value over a short space of time. Do you have any other examples?

You mention shipping Lego sets in #8 and how people can learn as they go. This is where I strongly disagree with your opinion. A new selller beggining to ship Lego sets without understanding their packing and shipping needs will earn themself costly poor feedback/ ratings with their on-line marketplace and subsequent reduced sales. Lego boxes are notorious for being damaged by improper packing. This is a sore subject for me, having traded collectables since the 80s.

The truth about Lego investing is it’s a super small return unless you wait for years. Buying a bunch of Lego sets doesn’t make you an investor or have a “portfolio” , it’s like you bought some legos and hope to sell them for more one day, it will never subsidize enough income to do it full time. There are real investments and day trading you can do that makes you real money. Not 100$ in a year. Lego is a hobby which is fine but you’re not an “investor”.

@@BrickBucks The guy is talking about the opportunity cost. Unless you reach some sort of economics of scale, the opportunity cost of buying and selling $10,000 worth of lego is much higher than buying and selling $10,000 worth of stock. Also just because your lego is giving you a return of 500% vs your real estate is giving you 50% return, it doesn't mean it's much better investment if the original investment of lego is $10,000 vs say $500,000 home. Making 40K is not better than making $250,000 because time eventually will be your bottle neck. Now, if you say you are holding a large amount of legos and selling them regularly, this is no longer an investment. You are actually holding an inventory and it's subject it'll be treated ordinary income rather than capital gain. So you outta be careful unless you want to have the IRS knocking on your door. As of 1/1/2021, the IRS requires sites like ebay to start issuing 1099K to anyone who sold more than $600 of goods, and they have issued more than 10K notices to people who did not report those income. So yea, be careful.
