As an adult Lego fan, I like them as display pieces for my room. My family was never in a position to buy lego when I was younger, now I'm in my 30's, I buy it myself, I have an absolute blast building it and then I like displaying it. Zero interest in keeping sealed boxes for resale, might disassemble the sets and sell them later if I move on from the hobby.

I’m with you, I’m 20 years old, as a kid , my parents being able to afford those tiny bags of micro sets was a rare occurrence. But now that I have a job, I’ve bought one set (Icon X Wing), and LOTS of “custom” lego figs for very cheap on different sites, I use them as display pieces and they add atmosphere to my room, resellers and expensive sets make it difficult to build a display set with my favorite pieces

That's not what the hobby is! The hobby is collecting (and in the case of Lego also building), are these people truly happy to have an exciting Lego set stand there untouched because in 10 years time it might resell for 200 bucks more? Collectors/investors that only get into a hobby for money or exclusivity ruin any hobby. I've been seeing this happening all over the place, not just with LEGO. Things like gunpla, anime figures, indie toys, an retro video games are also in a similar state. Bandai has raised the average price of their Robot Spirits figure line from around $40, to over $150 over the last decade, without increasing their quality at all. And they keep releasing their newest HG Gundam model kits through P-Bandai, instead of as general releases, which makes them incredibly hard to find outside of Japan or overpriced 3rd part resellers. And copies of retro video games and consoles have become nearly impossible to find for any reasonable price, thanks to all those stupid collectors grading services overinflating their supposed investment value. So for any of us that simply want a fun toy to play with, we're getting shafted. And, as the video said, the only way to fight back is to vote with your wallet. Like how I've been primarily buying the fun little $20-50 City and Creator sets, while ignoring all the massive, multi-hundred dollar licensed ones. Because I would much rather have a cool little car to play with, then use as parts for something else, than a $500 statue that takes up half my shelf space. And, if enough people do that, hopefully LEGO will get the message, and shift their focus back to those smaller, non-licensed sets.

How are they taking away the fun? Lego sets are available to buy at MSRP (or on discount) anywhere in the world - usually for several years. Lego also regularly extend retirement dates to meet demand. If you don't buy something when it's available, the price is likely to be higher when it's rare. That's been a fundamental rule of trading since the dawn of time, and is the same for any commodity you can think of. This idea that investors are scalpers or spoiling the community is a myth, as there are millions of sets sold every year in every theme. If the sets were like concert tickets that sell out in hours you may have a point, but investors are a tiny fraction of overall Lego sales of a particular set.

So many people now are buying them as "investments" to hold on and sell for more money in the future... they just don't realize what made old Lego valuable - the "burn rate". The beloved sets of our childhood that now sell for massive premiums, such as the modular buildings, I'd guess something like 95% or more were opened up, built, and displayed. Many are sitting on shelves gathering dust, taken apart in a box in a closet, scattered as incomplete parts, or just destroyed in flood/fire. Back then nobody was buying to keep it sealed. Nowadays I'd estimate easily 25% of the stock, especially of big ticket collector appeal items, are being hoarded away as "investments". Not to mention the Legos are being made in even larger quantities than before. Someday, the same thing that happened in the sneaker market will happen to Lego - everyone will look around and realize there's still tons of brand new product, and the secondary market value is just from resellers selling back and forth to each other in a convoluted echo chamber of speculation - the value isn't really there. Here's hoping it comes sooner than later.

Investors are only lowering prices by glutting the market, and they've made it easier than ever to buy complete mint sets. The people complaining about investors act like investors have some secret inroad with Lego that lets them buy up thousands of sets cheaper than everyone else, leaving nothing for fans, which is obviously ridiculous. The investors pay the same money and buy from the same outlets as everyone else. The whiners should just buy the sets they want like the investors do, or find a different hobby if things are too expensive or annoying to them. And like you say, the speculative bubble in these collectible hobbies always takes a dump. Hopefully it'll be soon.

I usually don't consider this people as fans, they are a toxic group that tries to extract additional profit from any strong fandom. I'm not sure what kind of solutions could be implemented by LEGO or if they would want to. I'm not as much of a LEGO person as a model kit person, luckily those don't seem to have as big of a resale market going on even though you still often have to be quick to get things, usually preordering up to a year in advance. Maybe LEGO could have a slower rollout with higher print runs to deflate the resellers though.

As adults have lots of money and will be more willing to cough up 60$ for a 350 piece set than a parent buying a set for their kid. I mean its lego peices, not a model kit, why would you make a set just to leave sitting around? when I got model sets, at first I was excited by how cool it seemed, but then disappointed by how little it did. the way I enjoy legos has not matured in any way except my skill. I still see them as just a medium for me to create something fun, mess with it for awhile, and break it when it gets boring. there's always a constantly evolving array of models and characters, and I sometimes come up with stories to try and tie it all together. for practical reasons I've had them boxed up for a while now, but I never stop thinking of stuff I could make, and when I have time and space again, I doubt the way I use them will have changed.

Lego is focusing more on adult sets now and I think they are doing this to make more money. See, adults usually have jobs and money to burn, and that might be the reason on why Lego is upping the prices: to get more money out of the adults that resell sets.

Lego are certainly doing it to make more money, but not from the resellers. Most investors don't buy the very expensive sets as the value would have to rise dramatically to get a good return, meaning a limited market of people able to afford it. Much less risk to buy 5 different £100 sets than one £500 one that might not do well. Lego is also targeting more adults due to the popularity of nostalgia and hobbies - especially since the pandemic. There's also far more adults than children in the world (and a rapidly falling birthrate), so the economics make sense to Lego who are positioning themselves for a broader market.

my biggest issue with lego and their adult fans. is that what you mentioned, the ones begging lego to do more retro themes, but then just buying the bandaid solution they give us cus we just assume thats all we're getting. when really if we pester them enough with emails and just negative feedback on these big sets that are meant to make us complacent, they may actually do what we ask them. they're so afraid of sets not doing well, when in the current space, literally anything they put out as long as it's not labeled 4+ and ridiculously priced, will sell also lego has gotten too comfortable with the super high prices. i feel like they're nearing the point when a lot of fans, no matter how much they love the product and the sets, they're feeling the burnout and the effects of spending so much money on lego and i feel like soon they're going to have a sudden and dramatic drop off of buyers and then be left wondering what happened because they think everything is still fine

What "small set" is going for $500? I live in Canada and there's no such thing. Has there been a significant increase in big dollar sets, yes. They are targeting adults that have disposable income. But when they do a new line like Dreamzzz it doesn't go more than 2 years because no one buys it. Which is why there is more focus on Licenced sets and less on original ones.

It also needs to be said that when scalpers buy loads of the same set to invest in it actually lowers the market price after retirement because more people having it sealed means its easier to buy and cheaper. This is why old sets are so expensive sealed because no one bought loads of the same set. In this way resellers are accidentally keeping down sealed and retired set prices.

Duuuude, I’m so glad someone finally mentioned this. I like to look at older lego sets and see how imaginative they are, they leave a lot of things up to imagination. They even would make their own sets based off of their licenses, so we would get imaginative sets based off of our favorite things, like dc or star wars. Now they just make sets based off of movies and shows, and I haven’t bought a lego set released in the past three years because of it. I know they recently made rebuild the galaxy, which is good, but it’s really just stuff we’ve seen before with a different skin. Or Sluban Humvee, cost less than 10 bucks here, i got minifig scale humvee that looks great and many playable features for it's size. Meanwhile when i looked for Lego city sets i used to have as a kid, the price jacked up to 200-500% and the new lego city regular vehicle sets are meh, not helping that most of the City product are too focused on Police and Firefighter.

Otherwise I am working on a huge MOC train layout and would rather spend money on bulk lego and specific pieces to create my own brick world instead of buying someone else's ideas to display on a shelf. (Those modulars become part of my layout, BTW.) I also realize that We Brick and other manufacturers are stepping up the game in quality, and for me it's the building and outcome and not the brand that is important - I will likely be buying less official lego as time goes on.

7:17 When I was a kid growing up in the 2000s and early 2010s, Lego taught me what inflation was. I knew certain sets cost a certain amount based on their pieces and piece count. When I saw a similar set suddenly get a higher price the following year, I understood inflation. In this case, it's both inflation and standard supply and demand economics. Inflation just makes it worse. I'm just glad I grew out of buying sets in high school. I still like Lego sets and still have several from when I was a kid, but they should largely be for children and families to enjoy, not adults exclusively. I can go on another tangent here, but it would be viewed as a biased rant.

I predict that if LEGO doesn't ease up on the "maximum profits" trend they've currently chasing, they will end up exhausting their cash cow. Already AFOLs are becoming mentally, emotionally, and financially exhausted by the increasing numbers of high end sets and lack of new or original LEGO themes. If LEGO doubles down on this then there will be a massive opportunity for others to step in and provide what LEGO won't. There are two ways this may present itself, and they aren't mutually exclusive. One, off brand brick makers will continue to up their game by developing and releasing their own lines of small to medium sets in original themes. This trend has already begun with some companies producing unique builds instead of knockoffs of LEGO sets. Two, a hybrid "alt" brick market will develop wherein businesses will take actual LEGO bricks, and produce for sale their own unique sets. Again, this technically already exists, but is currently in its infancy. LEGO continuing to ignore the non-AFOL market may provide the tempting environment to spark growth here as well.

@@bmbiz Fair enough. I guess the math is against them. If they want to use LEGO bricks, then they'll never be able to get them for as cheap as LEGO themselves can, so they're forced to either operate with terrible margins or raise prices. If instead they go with al bricks they have to bring them in overseas which will add import taxes, likely only making them slightly cheaper than LEGO if at all. Lastly, these smaller companies will of course have smaller production runs than LEGO, which also drives the cost up. Hopefully, people will take this into consideration and support indie creatives even if their prices are a bit higher. The more support they get, the more able they'll be to bring their prices down.

I’m old school. I buy the sets that interest me, build them, display them for my enjoyment. When I’m bored, I take them apart and organize the loose parts, then I build my own stuff with those. I hate all the commercialism and entrepreneurial junk going on with them these days. Funny thing is I’ve been doing this hobby for years. And this year my brother just out of the blue started buying and building Lego sets for himself and we’ve started talking about it over the phone. I didn’t even know he found it interesting. I finally have someone to share my hobby with. It’s a nice change.

I think the real issue is that over the past few years, we've seen Lego completely change the way they do Lego sets/themes just because of the changing demographics of Lego collectors. The face of the lego community used to be Lego fans who were into Lego since their childhood, growing up with certain licensed themes but mainly lego original themes. Now, Lego is appealing to "adult collectors" but these seem to be people that never had an interest in Lego since their childhood, it's more a new hobby they've picked up. These are people that have enough money to buy only huge expensive sets and I really despise how lego is only appealing to these kind of people right now. Take Lord of the Rings for example: Two beautiful new sets have been released; Rivendell, and Barad Dur. But that's it. It's no longer a theme, it's no longer a full range with a wide variety of prices, it's just about huge expensive sets for these lego posers to buy. And that's how I see it. The lego community has been infiltrated by people who aren't really lego fans and by people who just want the attention and clout that comes with being a lego collector. This is just the way I see it, and it's pretty clear that Lego doesn't have the same approach anymore.
@stevesherwood2944
@stevesherwood2944 4 ай бұрын
You can't really blame a Lord of the Rings fan for buying an expensive cool set, whether they grew up with Lego or not (although pretty much every adult in the developed world did...). Lego are repositioning themselves to appeal to a broader market - mainly because birthrates are declining rapidly across the world. There's far more adults than children (and the ratio will get more acute over time), and adults also have more disposable income. It might not be a popular strategy with Lego purists, but the company is safeguarding it's future whilst the child toy market slowly declines. It's not the adult fans that are the problem - Lego have deliberately created and targeted this demographic as it makes sense for their financial future.

I loved Lego and LotR as a kid and I think that those sets look cool af though. I never had sets as a kid just a big box of random pieces because the building was the fun part. Now that I'm older the main fun part is still the building just I'm not so interested in treating them as set pieces for play. I'd likely take the sets apart and rebuild them if anything.

The worst part of the scalpers/resellers: when they post the item and they haven't even received it yet and when they buyout all the preorders and turn around and list it on the same site for their ridiculous prices.
@stevesherwood2944
@stevesherwood2944 4 ай бұрын
How do you know 'all' the preorders are bought by investors? They make up a tiny fraction of buyers. Also, any decent investor will usually buy a set near the retirement date (or when it's on discount) so that they're not storing it for too long, and can maximise their return on investment. If the set you want is on backorder/temporarily out of stock, then just wait. If the set has retired, the price will go up. It's not like a concert ticket where you have no choice but to pay the inflated prices for a limited time opportunity. Lego sets are available everywhere in the world for years until the stock dries up.

I had LEGO as a kid and have been collecting as an adult since around 2000 or so and I am most definitely VERY passionate about the hobby. I never keep things for resale or as an "investment" (and HATE scalpers who make it harder for me to buy what I want). I buy things because I want to build them, leave them built for a while, take them apart and sort them into my collection for building MOCs with. My biggest problems with LEGO are A.Exclusives (sets that are exclusive to the LEGO store like the Orient Express or the Friends mansion or the Lamborghini Countach and sets that are exclusive to particular retailers like the City LEGO truck) and B.The fact that the big adult targeted sets are getting bigger and more expensive (in general at least, there are some exceptions like the Polaroid camera and some of the botanical sets)

Nostalgia does play a big part in this, and the companies know it. Right now, Pokémon card collecting is booming. I n 2012 I was hired to build bicycles at a Toys R Us. At that time Hasbro released their Star Wars vintage collection which included reissues of figures, playsets, and Vehicles from the 1970s. I noticed that most of the buyers were young adults and not children. I, myself bought the giant At At which I still have and is sealed in its shipping carton.

You should ALWAYS check pricecomparison websites like idealo or so. And compare prices yourself. After only like a month or so after release, you can get 30% or more on most discounts. The Dark Falcon can already be found at 131€ which means its still a bit away from 30% off. But just always compare prices and never buy at under 30% discount, its so easy to get these sets that much cheaper,nearly all the time.

The problem began when the Comic and Collectables stores jumped into scene and began jacking prices up for older used sets on Ebay. Even as recently as 2012, people would sell Lego, and it was still pretty much like buying an old used toy at a garage sale that might have nostalgic value, or was something someone always wanted, and the prices NEVER got crazy... When C and C stores began listing, that's also when ebay began to 'save' items for easy listing purposes, so someone wanting to list a set, would punch in the set number, and the elevated C and C price would pop up... the sellers began thinking - damn - look how much I could make? Over time, that's when the prices began to get jacked, and the C and C dealers began jumping into the convention/toy trade shows... it just morphed from there to where we are now.

This stops the moment we stop buying crap on ebay, they are predators they are the reason many kids don't get the gift they want Christmas morning. Millions of dollars are at risk when they launch a new theme. Adults are more predictable than kids, honestly what I would love to see is very small theme add on but huge amounts of classic bricks.

Lego was different to you because you were a kid back then. The lego experience of kids today aren't that different than it used to be. Kids don't check lego leaks, kids almost never buy sealed sets on the secondary market, etc. Your problem is nostalgia and dislike of capitalism, no related to the Lego community or company.

@TheShrekTheTacoandTheBallerina Back when I was a kid Lego was targeted to ages 3-12. And that's the experience I'm comparing it to. Me personally, I'd much rather be a teenage fan of Lego today than back in 2003-2005, when I was. Just the exchange of ideas and experience in the Lego community is so wonderful nowadays. As humans we tend to look at the past with rose tinted glasses and only remember the good things. If you go back 10-15 years or so I'm certain the demand on the Lego market was radically lower, and thus so were prices. Capitalism did its thing and now things are more expensive, but it's only expensive because people are willing to sustain those prices. It's just free market doing free market things and it has its up and down sides.

Agreed. Nowadays everyone expects Lego sets to be these perfect looking models that you put together once and set on the shelf. The charm of the older sets is that they were imperfect, and left room for you to modify them, or draw inspiration to create something different. And like you said, that spirit is still found, sometimes, in the smaller sets.

I'm an adult collector and it's an easy fix, announce that after the initial run there will be more, say another 6 to 18months, I was happy to see them re-release the UCS Falcon and I'm hoping they will do the same for the Star Destroyer, nothing ruins a scalpers day like seeing there "no longer available" sets being re-released. Also don't announce when a set is being discontinued, just say the run will be the last for a set time. I've got a UCS Venator, AT-AT, and the D&D sets among others, sitting in their boxes waiting to be built, I'm busy completing the Mos EIsley Cantina Master builders set that's been sitting in my stash for almost 9 months, my problem isn't cash or time anymore, it's space. All Lego need to do is make it clear that the runs are not final and more will come in time, it's really that simple, limiting the amount you can buy would also help but that's a lot harder to enforce on retailers.
