Can Wind drive 13 strange Lego Gears?

Different unconventional gear types that Lego does not make, all integrated into a Lego display machine that rotates the gears and itself. The machine is wind-powered, utilising a vertical wind turbine. The shifter turns the machine 1/12 of a revolution at a time, while only displaying one gear at a time to reduce friction.
All the gears have been 3D printed using an FDM printer and Silk PLA. I designed some gears myself and also redesigned others to fit perfectly within Lego dimensions."

Thank you for including the proper names. I've been trying to figure out what hypoid gears are called for ages now--I'd only ever heard that mechanism referred to as the "low-center drive".
@paradiselost9946
@paradiselost9946 11 ай бұрын
early trucks used differentials with worm gear primary drives rather than hypoids. bought the tailshaft a bit TOO low... hence why some of the old trucks use chain drive from diff to axle. in a car, they let the engine sit a bit lower in the chassis, doesnt have such a large tailshaft hump, etc... before differentials, about the only place they popped up was in overhead lineshafting, letting a shaft continue past a drive gear as the axles arent on the same plane. and a lot quieter than bevels, with better tooth loading... but lots of sliding friction. sigh.
@44R0Ndin
@44R0Ndin 11 ай бұрын
Harmonic drive gears are interesting because they are incredibly compact while also having an incredibly high reduction ratio and none of the sliding contact or axis change that you get with a worm gear drive. Because of this, they have a lot of applications in robotics, like driving the elbow or knee joints on a bipedal or quadrupedal robot like Boston Dynamics makes. The alternative in those cases would be hydraulics, which comes with plenty of its own problems (mostly about how to keep the fluid IN the system, and not "dripping on the floor").
@PunakiviAddikti
@PunakiviAddikti 9 ай бұрын
A similar mechanism called a cycloidal drive offers some advantages. It can be backdriven to offer impact absorption in joints, very important for quadrupedal robots. It can take more torque before failing and doesn't use gears so has very little backlash.

Just a technical note...your helical gears are a special case called screw gears or crossed helicals and are more closely related to worm gears in their operation than traditional helical gears.

Planetary Gearing is incredible durable and compact and is used in garage lift motors, Combat robots, pencil sharpeners, etc. Edit: I have more information. Harmonic gears are used in high precision applications, such as 3d printers. Hypoid gears are used in car transmissions. Herringbone gears are quieter than normal spur gears and have smoother operation.
