Excellent analysis. There must have been much horse trading behind the scenes for the various BRICS countries, each with its own interests and agenda, to come to an agreement. Kudos to SA President for his diplomatic skills in bringing this summit to a successful outcome, despite the intense pressure both from within and without. A true statesman and model of the new generation of leaders that Africa deserves.

Ethiopia is growing so fast, The GDP was 80$ billion five years ago now it is 156$ billion, Imagine the World Bank estimates to 280$ billion in 2028, and I just guess it will go up to 300-400$ billion because the Grand Renaissance Dam will start work at full capacity in the next year along with multiple different kind of mega projects is going on in the country.

Argentina and Ethiopia have experienced some financial difficulties, Argentina paid off part of its IMF debt trap loans with RMB, at some cost to China. the addition of KSA and UAE with deep pockets to shore up the New Development Bank (NDB) so it can service its members. it will be a gradual and orderly process so it won't overwhelm BRICS+ or NDB. the days of a single member slowdown BRICS progress is officially over. it used to be 1/5, now is 1/11.

Ethiopia needs interaction and helpful relations with many others for the sake of progress, growth and development including what you have mentioned, that is the unnecessary deaths of its own people.

Indonesia is in the Asean grouping.when Brics give one, they should admitted all Asean nation. South Korea and Japan are vassals to US, they need to ask US permission, same with Australia, also a US vassal. Brics should consider North Korea to join, giving them a chance after so many years in sanctions.

North Korea doesn't need to be in BRICS to use the New Development Bank. India will not allow ASEAN to join as ASEAN is strategically closer economically to China, letting ASEAN in would strengthen Asian interest in BRICS which will benefit China more than India which refuse to join RCEP.

China actually support Indonesia entry, it was India that oppose it because it saw Indonesia has been too economically close to China, Indonesian president was invited to Chengdu as the main honor guest, the HSR is build by China. if you look at all the country invited in, they are all geographically further away from China not because of China but becaues India want to move BRICS center of gravity away from China. so the analyst got it reverse.

Replacing the dollar is hard because not every country can endure the level of sanctions that Russia and Iran were exposed to.. Countries are wanting to deversify their economies or financial risks, but at the same time they are afraid, looking at this huge mountain ahead of them, they can't make the first decisive step.

You won’t get sanctions for trading in other currencies. You get them for wars of conquest or nuclear weapons programs or severe human rights breaches. I know the latter is subjective but there. Chinese sanctions are common but not declares. Those you can get for saying the wrong thing.

No. Not for Arabia and Egypt to join grouping. Their economy, society and people are not inclined to such grouping. For BRICS to form the core of this economical group beside the founders Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa, you join also Tehran and Havana if they found it feasible and plausible. For at least five economical years. Then recalculation starts.

Why Ethiopia? Not only the economic growth is the reason. Ethiopia is important for China. It's China's gateway to Africa since a decade. All big infrastructure projects in Ethiopia are built by China. China hosts a military base in Djibouti and rebuilds the Port again and gives Ethiopia exclusive access. Ethiopia is massively depending on China and China knows about Ethiopia's strategic importance in the Horn of Africa. Not to forget it's actually next to Africa's most important sea Communication node in Kenya. The combination with Egypt is interesting because Ethiopia and Egypt have a long time conflict about the GERD that can easily become a military involved conflict. What may happen when this escalates and both are BRICS+ members?

The inclusion of Ethiopia is a strategic intervention - to be able to stabilise the horn of Africa with Somalia + El Shabaab + to curb the aggression of Islam militants all the way down to Mozambique ( Delgado prov). Ethiopia has more than 90 ethnic groups + 80 different languages. Stabilising the Horn will benefit the entire east coast of Africa.

BRICKS will never be beneficial for Africa. Africa needs to invest in African Development Bank and Africa Union. BRICKS is strategically is competing within itself within China and India. China is using BRICKS as a tool to counter the US. Do we want to be in the middle between China and the USA? It will leave Africa exposed. We must look within our continent to improve our economic situations. Substituting one master for another is not a policy.
