Thank you for the video showing diffrent types of boning and ways to create channels. I just wanted to add that the type of "zip tie" she is using is actually duct ties or heavy duty zip ties. Useually 5mm. Historical costumers us it in place of whale bone. Alot of them use it because the flex and the way it molds to the body with heat is alot like whale bone. So it's great for historical stays and hoop skits. Expesually if your sewing on a budget.

I used that steel coil boning a ton when I was working for a ballet company. Micarah tends to use a lot of unusual things in her sewing. I'm especially entertained by her units of measurement

Yes. Lol I love it when she cuts things about as long as three jolly ranchers. 😂😂

You've piqued my interest! I'll have to watch her videos. I order fabrics and trims in metres and centimetres, but I still use inches when I make garments. My US friends think I'm a bit odd, but it works for me!
@dindog222 жыл бұрын
@@AngelicAmygdala she doesn't use Metres or inches. she will say something totally off the wall like "cut a piece about the size of a small groundhog"

@@dindog22 Oh my goodness, she sounds as nutty as a fruitcake. I'm definitely going to check her out now! (By the way, how long is three jolly ranchers?) EDIT: I've just watched one of her videos, and I am HOOKED! She is hilarious! I love her approach to fashion, and she's already inspired me to make a few makes. I love her!

What a great video! You addressed Micarah's techniques without criticising or making fun of her, and you gave a really helpful lesson on the various types and uses of the various boning products. Love your channel! 🧵🪡🧶🪢

I LOVE steel boning! I used to like cutting the boning and capping them. My friends thought I was nuts so they used to tell me to cut their boning and cap the boning for them...haha! If you're cutting the steel boning (for different lengths) I suggest you use your foot, stepping on the steel cutting tool with your heel (shoes on) if you're trying to cut by hand it's going to hurt. Using your foot is much faster.

I’d argue that while normal clear plastic boning is pretty cheap, the same is not true of synthetic whalebone (Herman plastic boning). It’s much more expensive. I prefer to use synthetic whalebone in my corsetry, over steel boning. I do occasionally use flat steel boning, though usually only in either side of the lacing. I don’t ever use normal plastic boning though, I prefer something that’s a bit stronger and will last a long time even in a daily use corset.

Thanks! If you follow me on insta, you'll see changes like that as we evolve. I did a whole series on moving my sewing corner around. Adding the window, putting in shelves. Changing this flooring in my cutting room, (which used to be my sewing room)... we get into all sorts of behind the scenes fun in insta stories!

If you could only use one type of boning which would it be?

Rigilene sew through
@theladyamalthea2 жыл бұрын
I would use synthetic whalebone. It’s plastic, but SO much sturdier and higher quality than Rigilene.

@@theladyamalthea I'm answering within the context of altering manufactured gowns and the hypothetical need to limit my supply to one type of boning. I would use what the industry uses. The gowns are most commonly designed for the sew thru boning style, and keeping the support the same is important for the feel of the dress. Brides expect it to feel and look the same- only fitting better.
@theladyamalthea2 жыл бұрын
@@BridalSewing I totally get that, but as a bridal client, I would want the crappy stuff replaced with better stuff. Like I’ve seen in your other videos how you often need to cut the existing boning out to alter a bust, and sometimes you can’t reuse the piece that was originally there. Why not replace it with something better? It’s not more work, it’s just a bit more materials cost.
