What a shame! I’ve always enjoyed looking at this old bridge. The bridge was built in 1912 and adds a lot of character to the area.

I think they can repair it. That bridge sure lasted a long time with monsoons, the weight of train loads increasing over the years, etc.

I'm guessing, and it is ONLY a guess, that, as long as the fire is controlled sufficiently to stop it really taking hold of the rest of the train, then it will require, obviously, the section of bridge that has collapsed and probably the section of bridge next to it, where the car that was fully engulfed was, to be replaced, but the rest of the bridge is fine. Whether or not the operational future of this bridge will be reviewed after this is, of course, another matter...

I would think that unlikely. Plenty of bridges have been damaged by unnoticed derailed cars being pulled over them. As for the fire, well, if that car had a failed axle bearing, which cold easily cause the derailment, then the heat produced could easily be enough to start a fire in the lumber. It was probably on fire before the train got to the bridge, it's just that, with the airflow moving over the cars as the train moved, it would have been rather contained to the inside of the load rather than the outside. It's something that's happened many, many times before, though not with such spectacular results, hence why they have hot box detectors on rail lines used a lot by freight trains so that the heat caused by a failed or failing axle bearing can be identified and the crew warned, this condition being called a hot box...

During morning runs or hikes along those tracks I routinely find large rocks, coins and all manner of auto parts placed on the train tracks. Most of those items are placed there by school kids curious to see "What Would Happen" when the train runs over this stuff. The largest item I ever found placed on the train track was a old shock absorber off of some automobile. That old shock absorber was held in place by large rocks on either side of the track so that it didn't roll out of place by the rumblings of the train. That piece of strategically place debris might have been just enough to derail a train if it were not kicked off the track immediately upon being struck by the wheel of the train. Yes, Poor maintenance or build quality could cause such a thing but deliberately placing an obstruction on the tracks will do that too. That's called sabotage in my book.

Excellent coverage for once. No screaming announcers calling it the end of the world or going on and on about the possible (non-existent) injuries. Good interviews with well-spoken people who could actually describe what they saw. Also, great camera work from all angles. You get my ***** (5 star) rating for accident coverage.

I find it interesting that cars away from the collapse actually caught on fire. I can understand the cars that bust open getting ignited by the sparks of scraping steal inside the collapse zone, but those other cars near the middle of the bridge are independent of the collapse and still caught fire.

@9railfan4 жыл бұрын
@AmericanPatriot Most likely diverging traffic to another line. It may make it a longer trip, but it will keep traffic flowing until the railroad assess the damage and rebuilds. Though that may take some time as they may end up needing to replace the entire bridge if the damage is severe. Hope this answers your question.

How did the fire 🔥 get halfway across the bridge .. looks shady
@gottawatch4 жыл бұрын
Tracy Knowles Well, you have a line of wood ties laid out on a wooden lined trestle bed, it’s the middle of a heat wave, there’s likely flammable preservatives in the wood, and then you ignite it. I don’t think there’s any hidden mystery - derailments and fires like this are well documented elsewhere. Looks dramatic, but it’s not anything weird. News will be happy though.
@Amtrakker4 жыл бұрын
The train caused the fire while it was moving over the bridge. The wooden ties under the track caught fire as the train stopped.
@sh0cktim34 жыл бұрын
Not shady. Most of the rail cars are lumber cars. Very very easy to jump car to car. Plus alot of the bridge is constructed from wood.

Start with the simplest explanation--it's a very old bridge and collapsed under the weight of the derailed train--before speculating on sabotage.

@@indridcold8433 doubt it.train derailing first, causing bridge section to collapse, then fire happens due to utilities being carried along the bridge beams.

@@rearspeaker6364 There were complaints of many strange noises coming from it this year. But the powers that be being what they are, ignored the lowly peasants. That is what they do think of us. Maybe it would have still collapsed even if the repairs were done. Regardless, the bean-counters did not want to spend any money on a bridge that was over one hundred years old. Well, now the bean-counters will have to spend a lot more. Maybe it could have been avoided, maybe not. But nobody of, "importance," listened.

Lol . Not to laugh but yeah reminded me of a time when I was around 8 or 9 yrs old. My friends and I used to put pennies on the track, on our way to the local swimming pool. Most times just get squashed pennies . But one day we had lots of change and tried for a record amount of coins. We put em on and jumped down in a gully behind a small tree to hide from. I had put a nickel not quite in the middle of the rail and when the train went by we heard a "zing" and a "whack"! My friend felt the nickel hit the tree. Dug it out. That nickel was only half flattered. And I'm positive that if one of us got hit by that nickel it'd be like getting shot.
