7:10 The opener rebid 3D based on the J process. From then responder checks if all the suits are covered to respond to the next bid. Does it mean that J process is not designed to be used after the opener used it? In other words, may I know under what situation is the J process no longer appropriate?

The J-process is useful whenever you have a choice between unbid suits. If three suits have been bid, as they are here, then the J-process can’t be used.

Hi Jab, Can you please explain to me why partner second bid restricts the points to 13 - 18 not 13 - 21points. Thank you very much.

Hi Nelson. When partner bids a new suit, they can bid at the cheapest level or they can jump a level. With 13-18 they will bid cheapest, but with 19-21 they will jump a level. So, you can use their second bid to refine their strength. If they rebid a suit that either partner has already bid, then the cheapest bid shows 13-15, a single jump shows 16-18 and a double jump shows 19-21.

I’m not understanding your ans to Nelson above. As I see it, north bid 3 diamonds at the cheapest level he could, which should be 13-18 seems to me,

Jad, do we apply the J process only when you answer to an opening bid? I see the general rule is that we select colours superior to the initial opening of 4+ cards, and if we observ that we don 't have them we go to looking for 4+ cards in lower suits (e g partner opens 1S and we have 5 cards in D so , with 10 + points we relpy with 2 D ) , Correct ?

The J process is a way of deciding which suit to bid from possible candidates. Of course this assumes you don’t have a fit with a major suit opening bid by partner. Essentially you are correct. In response to opening look at higher suits first and if you have none look at lower suits as you say.

I’m curious why north’s points are limited to 13-18 like others - what makes it be 13-21 , same as the opening value?

Hi Mary. I am not sure which hand you are referring to here. Could you tell me the hand number or the time code please. Cheers.

@@MsMary2nd Hi. Opener’s first bid shows 13-21 points. After the second bid we can narrow the range a bit. Opener bid a new suit at the cheapest level, so that is the 13-18 points range. With 19-21 points they would have jump bid 3D. I hope this helps. Cheers.

In #822, 2H bid by R1 does not show a 5+ card holding as stated but a 4+ card holding with 10+ points - correct?

Hi Vijay. The point you raise is often an issue for students. The 2H bid does in fact show 5+ Hearts, but it does so by implication. This is covered in episode 14, but I will explain why. Partner opened 1S and you did not bid Spades, so you do not have 3 Spades. The most you can have is 2. This leaves 11 cards in your hand. If you had 4 Hearts, that would leave 7 cards in the minor suits. So, you must have at least 4 cards in one of the minors. But with 4 Hearts and a 4 card minor you would bid the minor suit. So if you bid Hearts you must have 5. I hope this helps.
