BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER
Nathan Heldman
About the work:
“Bridge Over Troubled Water” was written by Paul Simon after being inspired by Claude Jeter’s phrase “I’ll be your bridge over deep water if you trust in my name.” Though by his own admission, this song was not a song that was typical for Paul Simon, it became an instant success, winning the Song of the Year in 1971. Nathan Heldman arranged this version for Tonality after it was commissioned by the Los Angeles LGBT Center for their Virtual Gala in 2020, and its premiere recording was recorded on Tonality’s second album, “America Will Be,” released in August 2021.

Lyrics:
When you’re weary,
Feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all.
I’m on your side
When times get rough,
and friends just can’t be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water,
I will lay me down,
Like a bridge over troubled water,
I will lay me down.
When you’re down and out,
When you’re on the street,
When evening falls so hard,
I will comfort you.
I’ll take your part,
When darkness comes,
and pain is all around.
Like a bridge over troubled water,
I will lay me down,
Like a bridge over troubled water,
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
