Even after all of the beautiful romances I have read & watched, I truly cannot think of a man who better showed both physically and emotionally how much he loved a woman as Jonathan played Gilbert loving Anne. The way Gil gazes after Anne at the end of this scene make my heart ache; he is so lost without her. He keeps taking hold of her shoulder in this scene not as an act of possession, but because he's terrified she will fly away from him like a bird.

Some people think that Anne shouldn't have rejected Gilbert the first time, but, she needed to reject Gilbert so, she could meet Roy Gardner and realize that her ideal husband image had changed. Roy Gardner was what she thought she wanted but, when she compared him to Gilbert he did not measure up. Roy taught Anne that having a sense of humor in marriage is important.

I think Phillippa Gordon said it best in the book: "Anne Shirley, you are an idiot!" Even though Anne was a total idiot to refuse Gilbert, as I've gotten older I've realized it might've been best that she refuse him the first time he proposed. She needed to let go of her childhood fantasies so she could fully appreciate that she and Gilbert were "made and meant for each other." In other words, she needed to grow up a little more.
@katrinafeldmane95155 жыл бұрын
Right? But Philippa wrote to Gil and encouraged him! She is such a good friend!

You know, it’s true. Now that I’m much older, I realised that she’s right. She needed to know who she was as a person first and then she would not only realise that Gil was the one for her but also that she was the best woman she could be for him too. It makes sense.

I agree. Phil also wanted to be like Anne (chapter 7 of the book) and Gilbert did always sense that Anne was unlike anyone else he'd ever seen. So while Anne needed to grow up more, thank goodness she didn't grow up too much, and Gilbert clearly benefited from Anne's imagination and her love of nature (remember the apple tree in chapter 2? - gorgeous!!). I think they need each other and that's what makes this relationship so extremely touching and beautiful. It's a theme throughout the books too - same with Anne and Marilla who both need each other and change each other. I just love these books and these films so much! There's romance to be sure but it's on such deep foundations too; love built on kindness and striving for goodness gets me sobbing every time.

@ardenalexa943 ай бұрын
We can say that as the audience but, her character thought she didn’t love him that way. She didn’t realize until later that she was in love with Gilbert. Sometimes people don’t realize what they want or their feelings for someone until later. Sometimes when it’s too late. Sometimes when it’s not. Luckily, Anne did get her happy ending. 😊 Not everyone does.

When a woman married she was EXPECTED to stop her education, not to work outside the home, tend house, cook, clean, bear children. ANNES not wrong for wanting to SEE what else she could accomplish even though she might lose Gilbert. That’s actually brave and strong for her time period. I love this party they are attending as her “ school friends” have grownup and are finding husbands. They were all beautiful
