Checking out a live action Disney film that I thought I was too old for when it first came out in 2007. So I decided to watch it as an adult and all I can say is, why did nobody warn me the Bridge to Terabithia would hit so hard!!

Such a traumatizing yet heartwarming movie. Both Jess and Leslie dealt with so much, yet they brought out the best in each other.

I remember when I saw it when I was a kid, it broke me so much that I cried for 2 hours after it ended. I didn't watch it until I was a teenager, and then I cried for 4 hours haahah. I really understood Jess a lot, and I felt a lot like Jess in my childhood, and I really thought it was so nice for him to get a Leslie, because I wanted a Leslie. So no wonder it made me tear like a maniac! It is such a good, and deep children's movie, they don't make movies like this anymore. Thank you for watching it, so I could watch with you!

I remember picking up the DVD for this back in the 'aughts and having the exact same reaction to the third act. I had only seen the trailer which made it out to be a tween imagination adventure. Having known nothing of the book it was based on, I did not see that coming, and just like you I was in a state of shock and bawling my eyes out by that point. It revealed this deep sorrow that I ultimately discovered to be not a reaction to the death pf the character, but rather a reaction to the death of my own childhood - nay, childhood itself. We who grew up with a rural disposition cherished those times in our life full of imagination and wonder, and it sometimes feels like that now, as adults, we are incapable of being in that place anymore. Life just killed it. So while yes, the shock of Leslie's death may have brought on the sadness, but something deeper is revealed as well. The knowledge that us and all the children we grew up and played with no longer have that feeling. And that's what is ultimately devastating.

i lost a friend suddenly when i was 14 and saw this movie a few years later. I was very surprised by the twist and it ripped my heart out, but helped so much because I was able to relate to Jess' character and what he was going through to process my own emotions. i don't know anyone who hasn't cried watching this 🥲

The film is based of a book. They changed the setting a bit to be more modern while’s the book took place in the 70s. The author wrote the book for her son who lost his friend, she was hit by lightning when she was 8 years old. David the son wrote the screenplay for the film. I saw the film for the first time at my grandparents place and remember crying every time I watched it. I recently used the book and film for an assignment of how I could use it for teaching purposes, and I had to rewatch the film, I ended up crying the entire time at the end. Then I read the book thinking I would be fine. I was wrong, I cried during the last chapters, and I was feeling this dread because I knew what was coming. It was different from watching the film because you knew what Jess was thinking and it was so sad. He was in denial and got annoyed with everyone who spoke about Leslie like she was dead. The book also stated that Leslie was a strong swimmer, and that is part of the reason why Jess didn’t believe she was dead. I think it said something about how if Jess had been there and jumped in to save her he would most likely have drowned too, and that helped him to relive it wasn’t his fault.

I was shown this movie by my grandma when I was like 10-11, traumatized the hell out of me, I've now recommended it to every one of my little sister's friends, and every time without fail, they come crying to me being like 'Why'd you recommend that to me?' (Yes, I'm evil (however my little sister didn't cry while reading the book or watching the movie so who's the real monster here? lol))

Great reaction! I recommend rewatching this movie but this time look for foreshadowing. It will give you a deeper appreciation for the movie. In particular listen for the symbolism in Leslie's SCUBA diving report. Keep in mind that foreshadowing can come through visuals like the bus driver's hat or the visual of seeing ketchup in Leslie's hair as well as references to death in casual conversations throughout the movie.

Great reaction dude! One of my favourite movies. Such great character development, you're rooting for the relationship, you wish you had somebody like Leslie in your life, and then she's gone. I really wish they would make a sequel just for the sake of seeing what happens next.

Then the boy will grow up, become a screenwriter and write a film script for the film adaptation of a children's book written by his mother.

@@DemonEmbarasser You wrote that you were wondering what happened next. If the events of the story are based on real events, then the sequel should be the same. Or did you want to know what happened there immediately after the end of the first part?
