@MooreNotLessReactions This is the side of Disney I love and miss with all my heart. Disney used to have just enough of an edge to fun and thoughtful with a hint of mean spiritedness. You really hate the bullies in this movie, but they still have a purpose. Now Disney is all about pushing their political agendas instead of telling good, fun, and imaginative stories like this.

The author wrote the book to help her son, David, cope with the loss of his friend who was killed by a lightning strike. She was only 8. David is the producer of this film =) AnnaSophia Robb still acts today. You should definitely look her up and see some of her films and shows =)

Similar circumstances? In real life the friend was struck by lightning, the author basically said the real life circumstance ironically seemed too unrealistic so she came up with the scenario in the book/movie

Millennial here- this book was required reading in our 4th grade class in the late 90s. Imagine a group of 9 year olds completely loosing it at the twist in the book that was just as sudden- also having read this book for days and getting REALLY attached to the characters beforehand. 😢

This is such a lovely story and yeah it’s heart wrenching literally out of no where. But yeah glad it ends well with his sister and basically keeping her memory alive. Great reaction and can’t wait to see more.

Discovered your channel from the Sorcerer’s Stone reaction. This was a great rewatch experience with you guys! Emotional, but great lol it’d been a while since I’d seen it. That scene is still such a gut punch out of nowhere. If you guys are looking for some suggestions, horror-wise I don’t really watch much lol but I’d say As Above, So Below; Donnie Darko (more psychological thriller), One Missed Call (probably not good I just remember watching it way back lol), and perhaps the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre just to throw in a classic. Rom-coms for Shawna I’d suggest What If? (also called The F Word in some places, it actually has Daniel Radcliffe in it!), Remember Me (more rom than com but still great), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (more com than rom but still great), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I really wish they hadn't changed when the story takes place; a lot of the behaviours of the adults, like the bus driver, teachers, parents,.... makes a lot more sense when it's 1975.

You saw the dad's face when Jess came home; they'd been thinking Jess was dead, too... That's a wakeup call. Dad won't take Jess for granted as he had been doing. Dad realized that he could lose his boy just like that. He DID love his son, but because he was a man, he offloaded his burden onto his son. That's why the older daughters were such spoiled snots. Remember how Jess was responding to his dad's treatment... either stoicism or "backtalk". Then in the woods, he caught his boy crying, hurting and _needing_ him. And Jess finally opened up emotionally to his dad... and then to Maybelle.

This was such a BEAUTIFULLY TRAGIC MOVIE!!! It's great, just a totally normal movie, everythings fine, then... AnnaSophia Robb JUST FUCKING DIES OUT OF NOWHERE!?!!? That stupid ass fucking rope swing that FROM THE BEGINNING you're probably thinking, "why would you use that rope? IT'S GONNA BREAK!". Then it ACTUALLY BREAKS and SHE FUCKING DIES!?!?! I just really hated the ending, but I understand how powerful it is, with changing everyone's life, and making everything better for everyone. She was such a positive influence on everyone, that when she was gone they were like, "I have to be a better person for HER!". Like his bully, who at the end beats up his OTHER bully, and then sits with him on the bus, in AnnaSophia Robbs seat!!

This book was made into a movie like twice. This newer version is THE better version and I have seen them both. I also remember reading the book... on my own... over the summer... and being completely destroyed by it. I even read the book to my nephews and I reach a certain point and get torn apart by the tragedy. Also, wtf said this was "light-hearted"?!? Like WHO!?

@@Isabella-tu9fb I just felt like we weren’t shown much compassion from the dad to Jessie, like he showed the other kids. So to me I found the news of Leslie’s death coming from someone who didn’t have the “best” relationship with - even though that’s all Jessie wanted - was really crappy, especially because it was just so blunt. I feel like the book probably had a better arc for the dad. We just didn’t get to see that in the film.

I lost a lot of family by the time we covered this book in school, so both the book and the movie were just torture for me.
