when you really think about what happened to Zuko, it really is exceptionally cruel, because to them the Avatar is practically a myth, no one has seen the Avatar in 100 years. Also it happened when Zuko was 13. Imagine a father painfully disfiguring his 13 year old son's face and then kicking him out and telling him he can't come home until he finds someone that hasn't been seen since 1924. It's pretty safe to say the "find the avatar" goal that Ozai gave him was just cruel way of giving Zuko some semblance of hope but knowing it would probably never happen and at the time this was basically a lifelong banishment. The only reason Zuko has any realistic chance is because of the completely unpredictable unlikely event of Aang returning out of nowhere.

Something I always love about episode 12 even tho it’s not touched on a a lot is when Zukos shop reaches the eye of the storm. The apology he gives to his uncle for his early disrespect sounds so remorseful he genuinely sounds sad for how he acted. It’s suit and quick but very well executed.

you guys said Aang only has a few months to learn all the elements, but it's more like a little under a year. Bc he finds out at the Roku temple on the winter solstice (December) that he has until summer's end for the comet to come (like end of September). So it's about 10months, maybe 11months if you start counting at the pilot when Aang wakes up from the iceberg instead of from the Roku episode (ep8).

That’s not why. Aang’s overall intention before entering the Avatar State before the start of the story was to run and hide from being the Avatar. That’s why he subconsciously froze himself. This time entering the Avatar State, his intention had been to save his friends, so that’s what his subconscious did.

This is never directly mentioned in the series so I think I can tell you this. To master Airbending and earn your arrows you have to create a new bending technique. Meaning Aang's a bamf and he invented the air scooter as a 12 year old lol.

@Steph_chibs There's a scene in the 2nd Kyoshi book where she is experiencing a vision from Kurik's pov and he's thinking about how he's already mastered airbending and even created a technique that could've earned him his arrows if he wanted. So there's a couple things that back this up.

So most animals in Avatar are hybrids of two (or occasionally 3) animals and the canyon crawlers were an attempt at designing a hybrid between a spider and a crocodile. The creators themselves didn't even come up with this design because they knew they wanted that combination but couldn't visualize it so they asked other animators if they could come up with something.

It also contrasts the previous episode with Jet. Jet was a leader who lied to people to get them to go against their consciences and commit violence. Aang told a lie to help the people let go of their prejudice and follow their consciences (they had literally just said "we could totally be friends if it weren't for our ancestors"). It's also a good lesson about how propaganda works, and that you should think critically about things you hear, especially if it is trying to make you go against a group of people. Plus it establishes that there are in fact refugees of the war, and that many are going to Ba Sing Se.

It never explains this in the show, but the arrows are tattoos given to an airbender once they master a certain amount of airbending tricks or invent their own. Aang invented the air scooter, so that's why he got his tattoos

It's my least favorite but certainly not terrible, just entertaining filler. I think it gets a worse rap than it should because Nickelodeon would sometimes play reruns of ATLA, especially when it was airing, but because it was a serialized show, they would often pick more "episodic" episodes so they could avoid confusion if it was in the middle of a plot, and the Great Divide became the most played episode because it was filler. In a marathon, it's fine, but fans of the show were SO tired of seeing replays of the Great Divide it became the fandom's least liked episode and most will skip it when rewatching.
