@RocketSurgn_7 ай бұрын
I particularly like his interpretation (and have thought it myself since Part 1 released) that in _some_ cases the visions that don’t seem to line up with what ends up happening aren’t just “another possible future” or unclear meaning, but actually internally self fulfilling. That the visions of Jamis as Paul’s teacher were directly true, even in the way events play out in the films with Jamis dying, because he does the teaching in the visions themselves. A bit like in the Matrix when the oracle asks Neo if the vase would have fallen at all if she didn’t tell him not to worry about breaking it. It’s been too long since I’ve read the books in full to remember if that exactly lines up with how the books describe the visions working, but it seems to fit well throughout Villeneuve’s films.

Jamis was his friend, and he did indeed teach him the ways of the desert: No compassion, no mercy. If you don't cut their throat, they'll cut yours. Whatever it takes to survive. Any innocence Paul had left was stripped away in that moment and he is now fully on this new path with the Fremen. I won't go into detail as to spoil anything, but it's portrayed as the pivotal moment of Paul's journey in the book. Once he kills Jamis, his fate is basically sealed and there's no turning back, with enormous consequences for the rest of this intergalactic society.

A few things you need to know to understand the Duneverse. There was a war with the machines. So there are no computers. Basically it's based on European history. The emperor is the king (probably of England since they were the most powerful). The Bene Gesserit are the catholic church but women. They manipulate behind the scenes and run plans over centuries or longer. The second secrete power the navigators guild are the merchant navy. The emperor appears to be the ultimate power. But if the houses( think dukes and other royals in line for the throne of England or even kings of other countries) turn against him, he falls. The emperor can be over thrown. The church can't openly take control yet but influence the emperor and everything else. Then there's the navigators guild. If the ships don't sail it all falls apart. So who really runs things?
@christoperwallace61977 ай бұрын
England wasn't ever the most powerful nation for what it's worth. That didn't happen till they became Great Britain.
@theprobester60347 ай бұрын
The Emperor is essentially the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Bene Gesserit is the Machiavellian version of the Catholic church while moving pieces of the chess board from the shadows as the woman are the true players of the Dune universe while doing eugenics to create a perfect being they can control by crossing bloodlines who can bridge space time to see a future where humanity survives called the golden path. George Lucas borrows heavily from the Dune novels and can see striking parallels between The Voice/Prescience = Jedi mind trick/ The Force, Dune Sandworm = Sarlacc pit, Fremen = Tusken Raiders and Jawas, Arrakis = Tatooine, Spice Melange = Spice narcotics in seedy underbelly of the Star Wars Galaxy, etc.
@Gunnar0017 ай бұрын
I wish there was some brief explanation of that for people who didn’t read the books. The strict ban on computers and A.I. is the reason why SO MUCH of the Dune universe is the way it is. It’s a really unique idea. Many new schools of thinking and the training of the human body and mind to it’s limits had to be created to fill the gaps that computers and other advanced technology used to fill. It’s why the spice is so ridiculously valuable. Spice is essential for interstellar travel because super computers were used to make the incredibly complex calculations needed to travel between the stars before it was banned. This gap was filled by spice, which expands the mind and eventually unlocks prescient abilities, giving one access to which route will safely get the starship to it’s destination. A ton of cool background lore was left out. Kinda disappointing.

Since Arrakis barely has water. All kind of bodily moisture is sacred and should not be wasted. So spitting is a sign of respect/gift. Frank Herbert has inspired so many (including Star-wars) and much more in Sci-Fi. Dune is much more than just a movie, it's a warning sign about religious motives and leaders.

The shields didn’t help them against the attack because they were deactivated by the doctor as part of his betrayal of Atreides working for the Harkonens. Since they didn’t expect any aerial attack could penetrate the shields (which was true), they were completely unprepared for an attack without the shield to save them. Enjoyed your reaction as always!
@RocketSurgn_7 ай бұрын
The ship shields (on the ground) weren’t deactivated, but they still weren’t “useless” in context. For one, they make it impossible to use lasers in the initial attack, but also would have stopped any weapons that didn’t go very slow on reaching the shield. That limits what types of weapons could be used to likely much more expensive/limited availability weapons and also to ones that have to go much slower giving (in theory) more time to shoot them down. Normally that would help substantially if they had the city shields working to buy them time to respond, and the communications that would’ve let them immediately alert everyone and send them to fight. Of course in this case it didn’t accomplish much in the moment because they were so completely caught off guard with none of the warning they would expect to have had if the doctor hadn’t sabotaged their systems, though it probably did drive up the difficulty and cost of preparing for the attack. They don’t go directly state it in the movie but the assault cost the Harkonnen an absolutely immense amount of both money reserves and political capital. They do imply it a bit, when Baron says to immediately start selling their spice reserves after the attack. Of course it doesn’t matter much to the Atreides how much it cost their enemy once they’ve already lost, but it does act as a deterrent making any attack less likely and slower to be ready (had the Emperor not directly aided the Harkonen invasion.

P.s. The Kriss knives are a real thing, but they have a very different and distinct shape. It's dagger with a blade that is wavey, idk how to explain. High af. The reason that woman starts screaming "aaahhhww" the moment Jessica says "maker" is because she thinks Jessica means the worm, which the Fremen call the Maker aka Shai Halud. But if you notice Jessica wasn't done talking, she says "It's a maker o---". What she meant to say is "It's a maker of death" But the moment the Fremen woman hears "maker" she thinks Jessica means the worm (the blade is made from the tooth of a worm). Which convinces her that Jessica and Paul are the ones from the prophecy. When the woman starts screaming it interrupts Jessica. If Jessica had said the wrong thing the woman would have tried to kill her, it's why she signalled the guards.

A good example of how forcefields can be beneficial is that no one uses guns because bullets are too fast to get through the shields.

You NEED to see the 1984 movie directed by David Lynch...just for camp purposes. The directors name is Denis Villeneuve (pronounced de-knee veal-noov) and he's done a marvelous job of adapting an almost unadaptable movie. Shields are vibrational in nature, and as the worms track things through vibrations the high-frequency vibration of shields on sand drive them insane. Walking without rhythm is key to making your way across the sands without drawing a worm - unless you hit drum sand in which case you need to hoof it.

Put simply, Paul sees a bunch of *possible* futures in his visions. Almost like the multiverse - branching paths based on a million little choices. So in *one* of those possible futures, Jamis became his close friend and taught him the ways of the desert. Sadly, that's not the future that Paul actually gets to live in. So all he'll ever have are his visions of a deep friendship that can never exist.

I thought the movie did a bad job at explaining what the Spice does. But, I don't think the writer/director thought it very important to his movie version of Dune. And that is okay. The Spice is the most valuable item in the universe. The Spice can extend a human's lifespan (for the uber rich). It is used by the Guild Navigators to guide ships traveling (warping) between star systems. The Sisterhood uses it in their process to change one of their order into a Reverend Mother, those who have access to memories of all their female ancestors. The Spice can only be found on the one planet as it is tied to the Worms. The Worms cannot survive on other planets.

(In reference to them NOT joking too much and missing stuff) Oh thank freaking god my dude because I gotta say that I’m like 10 mins into this reaction video and I was getting quite frustrated. Cause I mean like I was seriously considering if I should just stop watching at this point, which is why I’m in the comments looking for the tell tale signs of the fact that the near constant jokes come off as them just not taking anything seriously and therefore likely missing stuff as they are too busy taking jabs at the movie was what I had to look forward to if I was to continue watching. Cause like don’t get it twisted my dudes…I’m all for jokes and a few jabs, but when it’s a movie like Dune, that is overall a quite serious and kinda banks on the audience’s attention span being a hell of a lot more than a big dumb action movie would require, and it also uses dramatic music and immense scale to sorta immerse you in the world/universe of Dune to give you the sense of awe while watching……too many jokes and jabs just basically nullifies all of those things that the movie depends on! Imo 🤦♀️😉🤷♀️😬 So I’m super stoked to see that there isn’t a lot of comments about how they are in fact…not paying attention &/or joking too much, tho I’m slightly worried that yours is the only one that tells me they aren’t and I was also worried a bit cause almost every comment is (seemingly)packed with people correcting them on things they got wrong. Now yes, it’s typical to see tons of explanations in the comments but it’s normally more about trivia or expanding on lore etc… but these comments sound more like corrections of things they totally missed or misunderstood. Part 2 is amazing as well. On Jamis - the visions says that Jamis will "teach (Paul) the way of the desert", and the desert is brutal and unforgiving. The vision showing Paul dying is a metaphor of sorts. It will be explained more in Part 2, but as simple and spoiler free as possible you could say that by taking a life, Paul has killed his own innocence and it (inevitably) changes him completely as a person. Loved your reaction, but yeah, subtitles might be a good idea for part 2 - personally, I find it easier to keep up with everything if I have subtitles on (although that could be at least in part due to English being my second language, and being from a country that doesn't voice dub anything aimed at an audience older than 9). The same tech that allows the lamps and Baron Harkonnen to float. And those Sardaukar troops to slowly descent from the sky. It's wild, such small details are everywhere in the movie, but blink and you miss it and since it's never explained it might be confusing. In the books they don't use suspensor tech like this in combat, but it's a really cool adition and suspensor tech is a very common technology in the world (in book). There is a lot of unexplained stuff. Like that hunter seeker, why doesn't it just take Paul out? Because it works on motion. That's why Paul stands still. They shouldn't have made it move so close to Paul for no reason. In the book Mapes opens to door and then it shoots towards her, Paul who's near the door catches it before it takes her life. In the Dune world they do not have computers, silicon chips etc. Those are illegal because in the past AI ruled humanity and then an anti AI war called the Butlerian Jihad started which wiped out all thinking machines and ever since then they do not use such technolgy. That's why they need mentats, space guild, the BG etc

Denis Villeneuve is genuinely a master If you haven't seen most of his works, please do your eyes and ears and brain a favor and watch more of his stuff: Sicario Enemy (this one will confuse you, just let it) Blade Runner 2049 (watch the original Blade Runner first to understand the world) Prisoners

Paul's visions are not visions of the future. They're visions of POSSIBLE futures. That's why he sees Chani stabbing him and Jamis philosophizing with him.

They keep it in the water because the Atreides rule by power in the air and sea. So I guess in the movie their ships function as ships on land and sea, and underwater as a submarine. The giant thing in space has a hole in it, because it's basically a teleporter. The space guild folds space for the families to travel from one planet to another, to do trade etc. They are the most powreful faction in the universe at the start of the book and are vital to the story. Unfortunately we barely ever hear from them in the first or second movie.

Paul’s parents never married, though they were genuinely in love Jessica remained his Concubine for political reasons. It left open the possibility of a political marriage, to be able to cement an important alliance with another of the great houses if there was ever an opportunity. It’s the sort of thing nobles would do, even if they never intended to go through with another marriage, because at least outwardly keeping it as a possibility leaves options in negotiating.

The movies are based off of books that were from 1965 and actually inspired George Lucas to create Star Wars. So you may notice many similarities

The Spice is everything in this universe. It's what allows for interstellar travel and trade between worlds/planets. It also has other health effects and abilities. Without it the multi-world civilization can't survive. Also all AI is forbidden after the machine wars...which is another reason they need the spice, they can't use AI to calculate safe routes through space.

Yeah, I would say watching with subtitles is a good idea. I'm a huge fan of the books and even I watch with subs. It really helps with the visions and the Voice.

Fun fact for those who are not gonna watch Fallout😛, main girl's father first role ever was same as Timothée's just 40 years ago.😂 Also just remembered Jackie from Yellowjackets is in it, she is main girl. Hope they catch this comment. 😉

Hah! I KNEW I remembered him from something sci-fi, but could not place it! I was one of the relatively few that had a soft spot for the insanity that was Lynch’s Dune (hell, he tries to disown it himself) and now when I watch the rest of Fallout I won’t be able to unsee the overseer’s past life and wonder when Sting will show up!

46:18 The vision says "Paul Atreides must die, for the Kwisaz Haderach to rise." What that means is that the "boy" that is Paul through this movie must die, so that he can become the fremen he needs to be.

So yeah part 1 is a lot of table-setting but part 2 cracks off. As good as I think this movie is, part 2 is like 300% better. Legendary announced that Dune part 3 is in development, Denis is currently writing the script. He has two other films that he's making, I think one that he's co-directing with Christopher Nolan (about sentient, alien cows), so who knows--my guess is they won't go into production until 2026 or 2027, if the script pans out. The guy doesn't miss.

I was afraid I’d get way more “WTFs” out of Cody during this reaction, I was certain y’all would like it as long as you gave it a chance ☺️ Paul’s described as having a dancers body, so yes strong but lean. So, cut but make it Timothée Chalamet. Everyone who is a part of House Atreides by choice loves the Duke & his family as much as they loathe the Harkonnens, (which is at least as much as Gurney hates them-yes, they were all traumatized by the Harkonnens in one way or another, and based on the screams you can sometimes hear in the background of Harkonnen scenes you can use your imagination.) Duncan escaped the Harkonnen homeworld as a child after they killed his sister, for instance. The visions are possibilities, I always roll my eyes a little when they have the “the one” conversation, but I get most people need that shorthand. By bridging “time & space” he can see future potentialities. So there is a timeline where he is killed by Zendaya, a timeline where he is killed by Jamais, a future where he is fighting in the Jihad, a future where Duncan dies in that hallway…🤔 That one came true tho, didn’t it? To understand who Paul is we must at least question why he chose to go down one path and not another. Anyway, yes Bene Gesserit sisters can decide the sex of their children because they have so much control over their bodies a fully trained sister can stop her own heart if need be. So why dod the Lady Jessica choose to have a son? It’s touch on in the film but more fully addressed in the book: The Duke wanted a son and The Lady wanted to give him what he wanted, because love. The Lady & The Duke are not married because she is not nobility, they love one another and so you don’t see an actual wife anywhere but Jessica can only be his concubine-Or they could’ve married and said to hell with tradition 🤷🏻♀️. They also do not do a great job at indicating where “worm territory” begins and ends, literally every reacter has made comment about how they should be sand-walking after they land the ornithopter. I would have liked to have seen more sand-walking, I remember friends who were also into Dune complained about that after the film came out. Pretty much the only thing any of us complained about. BTW, in Dune there is no magic and there are no aliens-If you can do massive amounts of math in your head it’s because you’ve been trained to do that; if you can check someone’s vitals with your fingertips, it’s because you’ve been trained to do that. The bulls are not only symbolic of Paul’s grandfather’s death but a foreshadowing of Leto’s end as well, and also a symbol of their house’s Mediterranean lineage, (Atreides, pronounced like Pleiades.) Lineage is important-Bene Gesserit’s work has been focused entirely upon their eugenics program, specifically directing the specific individuals to breed with others until that line produces “the one,” (as the Reverend Mother points out tho, it’s not “the one,” but the one right now, the one closest to producing their desired result.)

12:02, the Bene Gesserit look at most human beings as little more than animals to be controlled. So the Reverend Mother calling Paul "a young human" is a compliment. BTW, the Reverend Mother is actually Jessica's biological mom and therefore Paul's grandmother. The Dune universe is an odd one. My grandmother made cakes and cookies. Paul's grandma inflicts painful psych tests. 🤣 Jessica's maternal lineage was brought up in later Dune books that act as prequels to the first book. I'm not sure if Jessica was ever made aware of their familial connection. Some fans don't consider this canon I do.

Aww man I almost forgot how many signs the first movie throws at you that Chani will become an anti Paul character in the second movie. Kinda really dislike what they did to Chani. Also.. why the FFFF is Lady Jessica constantly crying and getting emotional. She's a BG. I get it, they want to show her internal struggle but it diminishes the power of a BG, they don't lose control over their emotions. The only time Lady Jessica cries is when she mourns Leto in the tent
