You’re not supposed to be confused. It’s just that almost every single line of dialogue in this movie is important and if you miss anything you’re probably gonna be confused about something later. Villeneuve doesn’t beat you over the head with exposition. He gives it to you, but you better catch it because you may not get it again. Keep that in mind going into the sequel.

@@scotth3276 i mean, i agree that talking over important dialogue is annoying, but pausing to discuss, share thoughts, theorize, etc. or even just make the occasional joke or observation is important, otherwise you just stare in silence for a whole hour. Kwisatz Haderach, Lisan Al-Gaib, and Mahdi all refer to the same thing, a super-being that the Bene Gesserit (the organization Paul's mom Jessica is a member of) has been genetically engineering for thousands of generations by orchestrated, planned reproduction between certain members of certain houses. "Lisan Al-Gaib" is a Fremen title meaning "Voice from the Outer World." Bene Gesserit have such precise control of their body chemistry that they can control their own pregnancies through sheer will, choosing when they will or will not get pregnant, what the sex of the child will be, and whether to carry it to term. Jessica was supposed to bear only daughters that could be bred with the Harkonnen nobles, who are all male, but she had a son instead because she loved Duke Leto and wanted to give him an heir. The Bene Gesserit planted the mythology of the Lisan Al-Gaib on many populated planets because they intended to use the super-being as their puppet to maintain control of the universe. But if Paul is the super-being, that means he can't be controlled by the Bene Gesserit and therefore is a threat to their plans for the Imperium. Drum Sand is sand that is packed in such a way that stepping on it creates a "drumming" thud. And they all cut themselves before sheathing the knives because (like the real-life Gurkhas) they believe a knife should not be put away until it has drawn blood. Much of what Paul sees in his visions is metaphorical. His vision was that Jamis would "teach him the ways of the desert" and that he would die on a blade, but the vision's actual meaning is that by killing Jamis, he embraces the Fremen ways and his old identity dies in favor of his new one as part of their people.

Technically, if you want to be picky, the Lisan Al-Gaib and the Mahdi are the same thing. They are the product of a prophecy deliberately planted on Arrakis by the Missionaria Protectiva. This prophecy has been planted so that any future Bene Gesserit who should find herself in trouble on Arrakis can exploit it to manipulate the fremen into protecting her. The Kwisatz Haderach is separate from that. He is to be a man who can access the genetic memory not only of his female ancestors but also of his male ancestors. The Bene Gesserit plan is to breed this person into being and control him for their purposes. It’s something of a coincidence that both roles end up intersecting in Paul Atreides.

"Dune" which was first published in 1965 was George Lucas' inspiration for "Star Wars" and George R.R. Martin's inspiration for "Game of Thrones". "Dune: Part One" gives you the foundation for the rest of the Dune lore which consists of six books from Author Frank Herbert. Hans Zimmer did the score for the film.

And yes, Dune has a lot of middle eastern influences. As a franchise, this came out in the 1960s and inspired Star Wars, the concept of The One (Matrix), Game of Thrones (houses and political intrigue), and many others. It is for Science Fiction what Lord of the Rings is to Fantasy.

TBF, the movie does feature like 3 dozen lines of hardcoded subs for instances of Mandarin, Chakobsa and the sardaukar language, I was already familiar with the terminology from the books, but after a couple rewatches I realized that the hardcoded subs (combined with a couple early location-title-cards) seem pretty strategic about giving the audience some of the names and terms in written words to help them out.

If you think about it, nearly all concepts of this story were directly used by Lucas to create Star Wars. Royalty / emperor, indigenous names and rituals, desert planet, father and son, mind-powers, monks / religion, futuristic sword fighting, hidden family / bloodlines interwoven in the plot... Star Wars even has "spice" which is just a recreational drug that is smuggled. Some non-spoiler vague lore that the movies dont tell you, just to understand a few fun things. This is the far future, about 8,000 years ahead. There are no other intelligent life forms in the galaxy, only humans, but some humans have been ingesting spice in various ways to become mutated. Computers got too smart at one point many years before all this and AI / robots waged war against humans... A great war. Humans won, so they banned computers completely other than small devices that do simple functions. Each house has a person with the tattooed lip called a Mentat. They use spice a certain way and train their whole lives to basically become human computers that can do huge calculations in their heads. The spice cannot be made elsewhere, or manufactured, or replicated because it is processed by worms themselves. The worms as babies are only an inch long, but take centuries to grow. The spice-making is a complicated and long process where the conditions on the planet, and the worms lifecycles and bodies process it. It is essentially worm-poop.

The Lisan-Al-Gaib is a messiah figure for the Fremen meaning "The Voice From Another World". But the source of this legend is actually the Bene Gesserit, who planted the myth so they could eventually take advantage of it and control the people. Yeah it is confusing but they did a great job of revealing the concepts through action instead of dialogue.

@@mikeyshowpresents The thing to keep in mind with the Bene Gesserit is that they are very much long term planners and seeking to control things from the shadows. Their relationship with the Great Houses and the Imperium is kind of like the relationship between the Catholic Church and the European Monarchies of the dark ages. What is interesting is they came up with this idea to genetically engineer basically through eugenics a supreme being and implement a plan that will take thousands of years. In the meantime, you also seed a masia myth so when you succeed in producing him, you have ripened the populace up to be led by him.

It’s one of the movies that are not for being “blockbusters” in usual Hollywood terms but to really capture the spirit of the book. Its artistic storytelling is exceptional. Not the easiest thing to understand, saw some reactions who really got it at first watch what it is about but it’s really even from readers multiple layers in it. Political sci-fi. Let’s say, Lord of the Rings was the best in fantasy ever as adaptation, this looks like will be in scifi so far. At least on the big screen. We are lucky with the director and actors here and basically the full cast. (Haha, even my sister worked on it.) You were also not wrong with the reference to the “Force”. This is the base of Star Wars in multiple points. How they do that? Practical effects. Everything was built up. External parts Caladaan: Norway. Arrakis: Jordan. Everything internal is Budapest Hungary. They built up even the spaceship too. As for the book: now try to read it again. It’s way easier as an adult and that you watched it. The writing gets “better” at Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. Gives a lot of perspective to the movie. How to interpret this movie? Listen to the references indeed. Middle East, colors, culture, etc. that all together adds the depth to the dialogues. This time art really matters.

Blink and you miss it, also the director expects you to deduce some things that are not critical to the plot. Typical example is the palm trees being "old dream". Basically what he's saying is that the old dream of the fremen is to have trees like this grow everywhere. As evidenced by their pilgrimage and the ecolocial station, etc. Plus some tidbits from the second part.

"Old Dream" - the Date Palms. They take between 7-8 years to bear fruit. Similar to olive trees that need seven years without trauma to fruit. The reason why Europe 'extends the olive branch' as the sign of peace, because if a country had been at war there would be no olives yet. When a place offered you an olive branch it was symbolic promise that they were stable enough and peaceful enough that there had been no invasions in their country for at least seven years. In the desert, a date palm is a huge investment in care and water for seven years to bear fruit. So the trees in the courtyard were an "old dream", hearkening back to the Arabic and Persian cultures of the Middle East of Earth, which is the planet where all of Dune came from so long ago that no one remembers where it is/it had long since died off from ecological collapse). Date Palms as a symbol of occupancy and peace as well, because you had been able to fruit them after seven years of constant care.

Been a while since I read the book (which I highly recommend) but if i recall correctly, The still suits they have after the thopter crash were in the bags the Dr left for them along with the Duke's ring. Also Paul can't see the future. He sees possible futures. That's why he sees Jamis killing him in one vision and being his closest friend in another. Both outcomes were possible but neither happened. The Bene Geseret were trying to make a supreme being (Kwisatz Haderach) who could see the future and would be loyal to them making their organization the ultimate power in the universe. The original plan for Arrakis was to terraform it using the water under the desert. The plans were scrapped upon discovery of spice. No desert = no spice. Hey fellas, I worked on the visuals for this film - thank you for putting this together, really enjoyed your thoughts. Also, I love the graphics around your channel. Regarding the vision of Jamis and the reality of the fight to the death. In the dream/vision Jamis says "I will show you the ways of the desert" and we are to assume that Jamis is going to be a mentor of sorts. Then, in the end, Jamis challenges Jessica and, by extension, Paul, to a fight to the death. One interpretation of this you see around a lot is that Paul doesn't necessarily see what will happen, just what might happen. But I interpreted this scene differently. To me, Jamis did absolutely teach Paul the ways of the desert. You hear the voice in the end and Jessica's own narration suggests that Paul has never taken a life, and that to take a life is to take your own life ... that Paul must kill (and die) to be reborn. The visions are of him dying, but not in the literal sense - who he was died when he took Jamis, and Jamis showed him the ways of the desert - kill or be killed. That's my own interpretation. Really enjoyed this, thank you!

That being said, if you don't have the time or inclination, there are a lot of videos on YT explaining the Dune universe. It's definitely worth looking in to because a lot of what's in the book had to be left out, but it's stuff that's still relevant to the story. Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians have good Dune videos. My favorite is Quinn's Ideas. He knows a huge amount about all the Dune books. Doc Sloan's Science Fiction Station does the deepest dive. He's got a literal PhD in Dune. This is one of those great movies that you can tell was written as a book first. The world feels so lived in and thought out. The science doesn't have to be 1 for 1, it only has to be believable. In most scifi movies everyone speaks same language no question asked, weird planets are easily livable or just put on or take off a jacket. You can tell as an audience this was a story written with love vs another generic Hollywood epic that is all CGI and hundreds of millions thrown at it with no substance.

In the fight Paul has with Yammis, you asked, as a viewer how are we supposed know what that is. That's a very good point. For people that have not read the book, there's not enough time in this movie to give the exposition you really need for a first exposure to DUNE. In the earlier movie that came out, I went to see it in the theater. They had handouts for everybody that had a glossary of terms that would be used in the movie. That's the only time I've ever seen that happen. They couldn't add all the time to explain everything here or the movie would have been six hours long.

After Dune 2 you can also watch "Avatar" from 2009. That is also a great film. There are currently two parts of "Avatar". There is a third part of Dune coming soon.

Frank Herbert's Dune came out in 1695 (way before Star Wars) and is the greatest sci fi novel of all time, along with the 5 sequel novels that followed it. George Lucas' Star Wars was HIGHLY inspired by Dune. It's far too complex and nuanced to truly be captured in movie form, but Denis Villenueve did a good job of capturing the "essence" of Dune. Almost everything you guys were saying is complex or hard to understand, I assure you, the novel is very deep and full of lore and worldbuilding details, so a little bit has to be sped through to fit the story into just a few hours.

The problem with translating Dune to the big screen is there is so much source material that they had to cut a fair amount. The first attempt at this back in the 80's suffered from trying to fit the entire book into one movie. If they wanted to fit all of the first book into this movie, they would need it to be a trilogy since the book is so dense. However, Frank Herbert tied everything together so well in the book that leaving anything out removes context for other parts. That said, the movie is still fantastic and Part 2 is amazing, as well.

The book is impossible to read. It has a dictionary in the back of it, so when you run across a word you’ve never seen or heard, you have to stop… look it up… go back to where you lost your place and try to keep going. I love the original film from 1984. This film is beautiful in all of the technical categories for the Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture. It was released too early for it to win that, but who cares?! It made tons of money!! Disney is about to release a series about the beginnings of the Bene Geserrit sisterhood. I think it comes out next week. One of the hardest parts to understand in this film is that there are like four names for the exact same thing. Dune, Arrakis, Desert Planet is the easiest. The Chrisknife is a tooth from Shai-Haloub, which is a worm. Arrakis is the only planet that has Milange (spice) because the spice is basically the excretion from the worms. The spice is a hallucinogenic, makes your eyes turn blue and too many years of extreme exposure deforms the body, expands the mind to the point of being able to fold space. You’ll have to see the original 1984 version to see what I mean. They explain it in that film and not this one. There is SO much to discuss about this series of films so all I should say is, “Where’s y’all’s reaction to Part TWO!?”

talking of independent quirky movies, you might really like one called 'Dead man's shoes'. Its a ' psychological thriller revenge tragedy' set in a small uk town, and was co-wrote by the lead actor Paddy Considine, who was in one of his earliest roles (he now stars in game of thrones' house of the dragon series.) It has great audience reviews, and was filmed in a gritty down to earth almost documentary style, on a very low budget.

This is one of my favorite stories. I also read the book when I was young, and it was hard to follow at first, but I found the groove of it and loved it. Then I saw the 1984 film, directed by David Lynch. That helped me understand the book better because I finally had imagery to work with. This is as good an adaptation of the source material as the Lord of the Rings. Between parts 1 & 2, this surpassed my expectations by a mile. (Get excited - Pt 2 is even better!) Tiny piece of foreknowledge: Part 2 picks up somewhere between a few hours or a few days after Part 1.

Dune is over all a slow burn of a story. Massive world building on the levels of Tolkien. It’s ok to be confused, it’s a lot of information thrown at you. As a long time fan of the novels I think they did a great job for people not familiar with the lore. There are tons of little references, sayings and scenes that are homages for the book readers that know what they are but it’s not really essential for the over all story. A couple of them, when Gurney comes to rescue Paul from the sand worm Paul whispers “I recognize your footsteps old man.” Which has a double meaning. He said that phrase to Gurney earlier in the film but also one of the names the Fremen call the sandworm is “The old man of the desert.” So he is talking to both at the same time. Also, the bull has symbolism. Paul’s grandfather, Letos father used to fight bulls and was killed by one but also house Harkonnen’s symbol is a bull so it too has that double meaning. Dune is full of these multiple levels of symbolism.

Dune definitely gives epic vibes, like all the academy awards like you said, but I'm surprised you said it was the best sci-fi movie you've ever seen. Interstellar, Arrival, Star Wars, Matrix, Blade Runner 2049, etc. so many movies that were more emotionally moving, or even better fight scenes and soundtracks

I watched this movie on IMAX, 4DX IMAX & one of those theaters where the sound is the main component but at the end i had to step out because i got nauseous. No matter it was the best movie i have ever seen. The second was even better, make sure you get movie tickets for the 3rd film. It will be EPIC

Not sure what service you used to watch this first movie, but I kept seeing odd little typos in the subtitles - maybe go with a different option for the second film, if possible? The typos weren't anything major, but I wonder if a few of them might've increased your confusion a bit, here and there. Great reactions and discussion, per usual! :)

This happens if you are always talking while watching. The guy below won't stop talking and only have 2 seconds rest before rapping again. If the guy below just interpreted the movie, understand the dialogue and not just talking nonstop then it would be impossible to be confused.

The Bene Gesserit are masters of their own biology. They command their own cells when to produce energy, how to use it and to morph their own structures. This is part of “the way” the mother was talking about. Confusion arises because at the point where you asked, you are about 10 chapters into the book. As much as movie productions try to reproduce novels, they still have to trim out things in order to keep the run time short. Books like Dune, Lord of the Rings, the Bible, get edited to the best of their ability but leave out necessary explanations that enrich the written word.
