This wasn’t actually a pity kiss. In the books he has a LOT of inner monologue and he admits with some shame, that if she had asked him this a few months ago, he probably would have kissed her out of pity. But the moment she asked him for that kiss he started realizing that he actually really really wants to kiss her and it kind of struck him speechless. Because up until that point he didn’t /see/ her as a woman. She was a friend, always has been, since childhood. Her asking that served to shift his perspective and forced him to view her differently for the first time and a lot of his thoughts were along the lines of “I can’t believe I never noticed how beautiful she is…” Since it’s not in the style of the show to actually make anyone’s inner thoughts heard, Luke did a pretty good job conveying his realization and yearning. There’s also that panic of “oh god I’m feeling things for my bestie, wtf do I do about this. What if I ruin our friendship. Is this weird? What if it’s weird..” 😂

lol Penelope's convinced she will never have any kind of romantic love after her scandal so she wants to experience a kiss at least once. It was brave actually, cause she's taking control. She didn't give a fuck about society rules anymore. Also the kiss was never about him, it's all about her. She knows she can trust him because he's her friend and by agreeing to it, he trusts her as not to trap him into marriage. There's not one part of her that believes he would reciprocate her feelings at that point.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I initially had wondered if they would change it from the book. But I totally GET her. It's not her begging for a kiss. I saw it as she took OWNERSHIP of her first kiss. In fact, Pen was so courageous about so many things - her entire makeover and taking lessons from Colin is all about her taking ownership and taking action. Stepping out from being her usual wallflower self. And EXACTLY well put - the trust went both ways for her to ask for it and for him to comply. It was a request from a trusted friend and Colin fulfilled her wish.

Remember in season one Marina wanted Colin to take liberties with her, and he said no. Colin kissed Penelope because he wanted to. If he didn’t want to kiss her he wouldn’t have. She asked, and he was like why not. She asks in the book as well. 🤷🏾‍♀️ But it’s an amazing kiss. ❤❤❤❤

I just noticed Cressida thought she was dissing Pen about her beautiful emerald dress for not being sturdy. In the end Pen got the last laugh and Mr Sturdy. 😉 😉

I would say he’s been in love with her for a while (and he liked her liked her for the whole show) but he hasn’t realized/has been in denial. She gave up though. Like she took his “I would never court Penelope” thing at face value. So for her, asking for the kiss is because she genuinely thinks her chances of finding anyone at all are done. She trusts him and knows that she can be vulnerable in front of him. So she took charge of her own experience and asked. It’s not because she thinks it’s going to spark his interest in her. For her the kiss is an ending and for him it’s a beginning. So this is a great moment because, in being brave, she’s flipped their dynamic accidentally. (That and the kiss itself is just aesthetically really romantic.)

LOVE your reaction! Love husbands/men being into Bridgerton! Can't wait to watch your ep 3 & 4 reactions. And I agree with the comments below about the first kiss. I initially didn't like her asking for a kiss either but then I GOT IT. She was at rock bottom and in that moment - asking for a kiss actually was a very courageous thing to do. She took ownership of her first kiss! Another person made a very enlightening comment - she said she could identify with this because when she had a near-death experience at age 16 or 17 getting pulled out to sea by a rip-tide and thought to herself "please God, I can't die a virgin." LOL.

I understand why you’re upset about the kiss but she had lost all hope and was desperate she was convinced nobody would ever want her or desire her As for him the kiss just solidified everything he’s been feeling for her and how deep those feelings were Also that scene was almost identical to how she said it in the book

I'm a month late to the party, but I'm loving your reactions so far! I can't wait to finish the season with you! One thing I think a lot of people don't pick up on is that Colin has pretty low self-worth. As charming and popular as he is, he doesn't really expect anyone to love him that way. That's why he was such a sucker for Marina in season 1. It's also the reason he is so clueless about Penelope's feelings. We see the same thing in Penelope later this season, when she was completely shocked by his declaration in the carriage, despite the fact that he'd practically been drooling over her since their kiss. But she never expected him to return her feelings, so she explains it all away in her head. And he's been doing the same thing. He would never expect Penelope (or anyone, really) to feel that way about him, so he just dismissed all the signs as simply her being his friend. That's why he's still so insecure even after they're engaged, always afraid she'll change her mind about wanting to marry him. That's why he so focused on trying to prove himself to her, to "be worthy of her" in his own words. Even when he was getting all the attention from the ladies in this first half, you can see him eating it up, but you can also see how empty it makes him feel (see his response to Anthony congratulating him on all his new admirers in episode 1)... because this is just further proof that who he was wasn't good enough. Because everyone seems to prefer the rake persona he's put on. Except Penelope, of course, which is the whole point. She loves him for exactly who he is, and he loves her for exactly who she is. That's what I love so much about this season! It's absolutely my favorite so far! I honestly can't imagine any future season topping it!

if you watch back when pen was talking to the second lord you could see colin didnt like it and jealous was playing in the back ground and pen thinks no ones every going to want her now so that kiss to her was her only chance and i think for her this is the end of her and feelings for colin and its had the opposite effect on colin he sleeps around but theres no feelings ther and thats why he looked shocked that he felt something

This exactly! He was already deep in his feelings for Pen, but he didn’t know what the feelings were yet. He would not have given her a ‘pity kiss’ because he still sees himself as a gentleman and wouldn’t take liberties with a lady of the ton unless his feelings compelled him to.

Your reactions and commentary are hilarious and on point. Please keep the Bridgerton reactions coming…even rewatches. I love to see men getting into and sharing their thoughts on shows and films aimed at females. Season 3 is a lot to react to!
