A coffer dam is what I suggested before. Your close enough to the road where dump trucks could back up and dump fill material into the Canal. If ground is soft, a bed of stone on Geotextile fabric will fix that, or another option is the crane matts to drive on. Once the coffer dam is in, then one side could be used as a ramp into the Canal, there, you'd use the crane matts to drive equipment on down to the breach area. This is the simplest way to get equipment in and fix the breach. Meanwhile, the waters rise on the other side of the coffer dam and everyone can float to safety. Tell this to Peel please. Not rocket science. Take only 2 days to construct the coffer dam. Wish I was there, I'd be done by now.

Once you leave the boat you will not be allowed to go back to your boat until they let you, and that could be months away. If I were you I would stay put, once the weather breaks they can start work on putting in a dam and get you refloated, you being on your boat will help speed that up. Best of luck anyway.

So right to stay put on 'Olive'. So many things could go awry if you agreed to leave. Imagine, even if they found you a decent hotel, the cats would be unhappy and then if the hotel later felt they were a nuisance they would have no problem in turfing you out. Then there's the security of 'Olive' if no-one's aboard. You are practical, resourceful people who are getting on with things and your safety level can be decided by you, not by some faceless organisation that isn't living through what you are living through. Whichever way it goes, I hope that everything will move along as quickly as is possible given the situation, so that you can return to a more normal life. But I will say this. You have seen and experienced the best of human behaviour since this first happened. The 'salt of the earth people from your own boating community' and the kindness of acquaintances and even strangers. And that's something that's really warm and restorative. It makes you think that humankind isn't always so bad.

Perhaps they can dam the canal on each side of the breach and the canal can refill from rain water. Then you can go back the way you came once the water level rises. They could also pump flood water back to the canal to assist with refilling the canal. It would also help alleviate the flooding.
@Plasmastorm738 сағат бұрын
I would think they would need to dam it in a more sound location than at the breech. The walls of the canal may not be stable enough to hold back the water, also the water in the canal is flowing not stagnant.

Why don't you suggest that rather than spend money on a hotel, that they trailer your boat to an area not affected by the breach? They could probably get a better price than you to do it. After 30 days it might pay for itself. Why not suggest that. You're close to the road and all. Engineering tip: when someone tells you a schedule for doing a fix like this (or any other building), double their estimate and then add half again. So if they say 2 weeks, a better guess would be six weeks.
@stefflus089 сағат бұрын

Getting a crane close enough to lift a 20 ton narrowboat (or indeed several boats) onto a lorry, is just not possible. It would have to be almost alongside the boat being lifted and, even if the ground was level there, it's highly unlikely that the ground alongside the canal would support it. I'd just wait for the re-watering no matter how long that takes and suggest they provide the necessary services in the meantime. I wouldn't be leaving my boat alone there now that it's been plastered all over the internet!

The problem the canals have, as far as I can see, is they are contained water for which the containing authority has a liability under an old case of contained water called Rylands v Fletcher known to every law student. If the owners of the canal wish to make alternative operative circumstances because of the situation then they may have validity. You should take some legal advice because what is polite at the moment might be less polite in the future. It is worth the fee to know where you stand for future movement.
@medwayhospitalprotest8 сағат бұрын
I would be concerned about the possibility of further breaches, given the situation looks terrible and may have revealed problems nobody knew about. This canal is some 250 years old and poorly maintained. If there were a sudden collapse it really could be very dangerous, and thus very expensive to Pool Holdings indeed. I think you are correct that legal advice may really be a "stitch in time".

I spent today making chicken pot pie and apple pie filling. Do you drink that over there? I love your “pantry.” Such kind people. Green Thumb is what we call someone who can grow anything and everything. Well, it seems that the cost to get pump out, and the cost of diesel, free to you, but perhaps charged to the canal ownders might be less costly for them than moving you into a hotel. I would want to stay on the boat, too, and to keep living in your home. I would be nervous leaving it unattended, and the effort for moving to a hotel would be a whole lot of effort. I agree with staying on Olive. I think it is all wonderful for you. It is sounding good. If they can get you floating then no concerns about running the engines longer than 1 hour. Tell them " no " it's your home, Let them move your boat by crane if need be. Here is a plan, put up those boards a bit further up from where you are and refill the canal. That way you could leave under your own steam again.

If you did leave the boat are the council going to provide security to make sure that the boat is safe from anyone breaking in or vandalism
@mikew.892537 минут бұрын
If they don't offer guaranteed security and sign off on replacing your boat and contents When it gets vandalised the REFUSE .

Refloating in one to two weeks sounds very optimistic to me. My guess is more like two to three weeks from commencement of coffer construction. You are ok as you're facing the right direction to make your exit. Joe will need to turn or back out. The breech itself will take months to fix - August, September, October 2025 - who knows?

Be careful because after you leave, you will not be allowed back. What they will do is offer you penny’s for your boat/home and wish you the best. You will be left with no choice.

It was always "green fingers". I think that green thumbs is what the Americans say. I think you're very wise to stay with the boat.

Well it would be best to move out until you can refloat It's hard to do all the supply stuff you need to locked in place I'd imagine a few boaters would have headed south by now if able or closer to utilties supplies. Problem is who pays? Months in hotel, the bill for the room, more for all the restaurant meals AND you still need to go to boat and check it out, remove snow, ice, keep heating going, run the water. So it has to be a localish hotel, unless the gov't can rent you a furnished apt you can cook in by the month. The solution is a temp coffer dam, float you all out. Done in a month if anyone cares to try.
@Angie-fe8yd7 сағат бұрын
They're going to try coffer dam soon

what did you expect from them? their masterplan is to close whole canal and ignore the public. to them the land is more profatable not the infrastructure. So as soon as you leave they will never let you back, its a regular thing they do and masters at that
