Often times people forget how deep the scar caused by european colonialism had in Mexico... Just to put an example, CDMX, the country's capital has big water problems were it needs to pump potable water from the near cities up the mountains that surround the city & from underground from the ancient lake Texcoco. Many experts theorize that had the lake not been dried up, the city wouldn't be suffering those problems... Now, you may ask, who dried up the lake then? Mexicans? The aztecs? No, it was Hernan Cortes himself who decided to establish the new capital for New Spain just were Tenochtitlan was and dry up the lake to make way for the paved roads and other european buildings, a really BIG stupid decision that was proved right when the city started to suffer constants flooding & and avalanches provoked by the drying up process.

Loving this channel, and this video in particular. I'm from the US, but married to a Mexican. I've heard and seen so many of these names referenced in my visits to Mexico, especially in the names of streets, neighborhoods, and other places. It's nice to get some context as to who is who and what happened.

It really opened my eyes to see how recent a lot of this history is. For example, I'd always assumed that the PRI and PAN were basically akin to D and R in the US, and I never would have guessed the PRI had such a history

At my university there this guy in my class from Mexico straight up defended Porfirio Diaz on the grounds that he "brought stability to Mexico" and I was like dude, he was a dictator who essentially undid what Benito Juarez worked for and created vast wealth inequality that led to the Mexican Revolution. Later before waiting for class he showed me pictures of himself wearing a WWII German Wehermatch uniform he bought online so that explained his poltical beliefs 😅💀

@ Yeah I wonder why. I guess it's on the belief that if modern Mexico had a powerful military dictator that it would easily destroy the cartels and everything other problem ( caused by corruption/neoliberalism ), will magically become resolved lmao. Great video and channel btw. Iv spent the last few years researching my Mexican ancestry and have been trying to learn more about it. Even go through 23&me and Ancestry

I mean, Juárez signed the McLane-Ocampo treaty, ceding even more territory to the Americans, and worse, rigged the last election. Juárez wanted to be the dictator that Díaz ended up being, alas.

Many people overlook politicians like Porfirio Diaz for the atrocities they did, just because they did some good, especially good for the elite. Nothing they do is good if it's at the cost of the majority of the population and they are suffering. Good you pointed that out to the guy.

It's a wonderful video. The Summer Olympics were the ones held in Mexico City in 1968, by the way. José López Portillo was the one who had a severe economic crisis at the end of his presidency and nationalized the banks of Mexico. Now I am so happy with Claudia Sheinbaum as president. Mexico is on its way to become a superpower and a developed country. Finally Mexico is reforming.

How am i just watching this video now after 3 years? You did an excellent work on this, great research. For those interested the 68 massacre they didnt just shot at the protesters wich appart from the university students mentioned, many of them were accompanied by their families, their mothers their brothers and sisters, they where swept up by bullets indiscriminately, the firing at the Tlatelolco plaza was so intense and chaotic that there were even causalities between the army bc of their own crossfire, and it didnt end there, they chased them down through the city, everyone suspected to be involved were arrested or "disappeared", they opened up houses to look for them bc they starded fleeing into them, many people was arrested or shot at their own houses without even knowing what all that noise outside was

Not true, AMLO has had LOTS success!!! Crime has been declining, AMLO has created pleanty of jobs at all levels of society and has created many opportunities for the mexican youth and for its working class. There are many infrastructure projects such as the comeback of railroad transportation; the healthcare free for all its citizens. There is no need for Mexican nationals to migrate to other countries, now a days. Many other positive things to write about. All has that is happeing in Mexico has been publically documented in the internet. Thank godness for that, so that nobody that chooses won't be misinformed with bias voices.

The USA BOUGHT Territory following the Mexican American War for 13 million in Gold Bullion and furthermore paid ALL of Mexico’s debts incurred during the war. In 1853-1854 Mexico again sold nearly 30 million additional square miles of land for 10 Million in Gold Bullion during the Gadsden Purchase. Additionally, every time we bought land from Mexico we offered the Mexican Citizens citizenship to those living on those lands and more than 90% accepted it. Finally, I felt that your video inferred that the USA stole millions of square miles of land from Mexico which is absolutely false.
6 ай бұрын
This video is about Mexican history, not about the Southwest. It says that a US force occupied Mexico and extracted half of its territory. I don’t see how anyone could possibly find that controversial. Even Americans at the time didn’t. There was an effort to get all of Mexico and the territory that would be given up would have been much larger except for the American ambassador in Mexico. That the US paid for the territory does not mean it wasn’t extracted since it would not have happened without an occupying army.
