My brief impromptu presentation of some materials from Counter Blade Tactics at GM Bobby Taboada's Balintawak World Camp. This is a small section of bigger progression that I have developed with and for my students over the last few years. We cover proper footwork and body mechanics throughout the progression of Blade to Blade, Empty Hands to Blade, and then Blade Against Empty Hands (MIL and LEO only). Each section is progressive and plays into the next. I always try to stream line my teaching and organization of materials so my student's get the most out of every training session.

It is always an honor to be invited to share with all the great people in the Balintawak community. Hope you guys enjoy

I think you may have let the cat out of the bag . I was told by my instructor that the cross parry alone would not work on it's own . I already figured that out though. there are many secrets that somtimes as students we have to figure out for ourselves. I think that your technics are realistic. Thanks for sharing.

All these fancy stuff for impressing the buyers after a big mindmistake wont work. Cause in all he think he will always catch the wrist, whats not the case. Also even in this video he need to get ready for it "now stab me here, now stab me so". The Attacker have the suprize, not you. So in order to make this general good technic work, including to catch the wrist, you need to push your body into him, ideal shove him back. Dont go KungFu Sideway, dont think to catch his wrist always. Block+Grap+Push Shoulder into him, to get the action on Your side! You may not catch wrist direct but then by the secound or thirt Stab which he then can only do by going backward, so not much powerful. If go Sideway you only will fight his left hand, with who he will try to hold you in place, while he rappidly Stab and Slice your missgrabbing hands and body. Sure every technic can work and this is from 2015, so simply train this, find loophools, develop solutions and get better. Thats the beauty i like. Judo was great till Bjj show up, and it will still go on and on.

One important thing he doesn't explain is that you will mostly get cut! He should also explain which areas of your body that you need to protect and which body parts can sustained damage. As well as disarming techniques. At close range a knive is more dangerous than gun is much harder to defend against.

I've been looking for instructional's and classes that would teach exactly how to defend yourself in a realistic standpoint when it comes to knife fighting. All I got was the type writer and the Jason Vorhees/Michael Myers strike scenario's. I want to ask, do you have any instructional dvd's I could buy from you that drives as deep into this topic? Also where is your studio located?

To all the smart alec schmucks: these are drills. They are meant to convey basic concepts of attack. They are meant to drill reaction time and structure of defense and attack. Of COURSE, in real combat, you WILL get cut. No one is debating that. A good coach and training partner will help by accelerating the pace when one is ready. It seems like all the meat heads with their petty comments only want to fast forward to the point where someone gets hurt. Pro tip: instructors weed out you types because many of you don't have the morality nor the social maturity to pursue these arts meaningfully and I assure you, most will be rectified and thoroughly embarrassed with a proper ass kicking, handily. It happens in every gym, dojo, martial arts academy. Safe training, everyone.

It is always easy to write: "it doesnt work" and such stuff and we can debate about stress and "simplicity of techniques that are being used in real life". two things though i have in mind when it comes to "leaving the centerline" kali knife defenses. 1. when i train leaving the centerline and catching the arm frequently (every day!) the technique which is complex will become a habit (yes it is complex!!! because its easier to stay in the centerline, deflect the attacking arm and beat the shit out of the attacker instead of a standing kamura style armbar and taking the agressor down + pinning him to the floor. -beat the shit out of him until he drops to the floor unconscious is to my eyes preferrable!- ;-) ) 2. there is something that you should NEVER (EVER) forget: Speed, Surprise, Violence of action! this makes things (as well technical advanced / complex things) that you never believe to be pissible to do in a confrontation! in the end i bekieve its a matter of personal taste and your personal toolbox, i for example do not train knife tapping (qol dmama) at all because i wouldnt use it (cover, crash, counter is my personal tool!) but anyone of course can train whatever he / she feels fitting his / her needs. one thing though when it comes to the knife you MUST always have in mind (as well i believe the trainers MUST teach that!): when someone attacks you with a knife you will get hurt! if you believe that you will get out of such a situation unharmed because of your superior kali techniques you live in la la land.

He's right, getting "out of the line of attack" cause parrying the other guys arm in a circular movement is real difficult and grabbing his wrist after , for get bout it . Either step outside or inside , block his thrust and attack ..much better tactic .Same as a gun why wrestle with gun when it's pointing directly at you , it's stupid , so you push it to side , misdirect , then tussle . Same principle , you're misdirecting w/ hands .

I took this in Philippines its basic in the 70's. Most of these are drills and 70% is more on how you react - head and body position, foot work, how you instinctively react. defense is most important because it keeps you alive to counter. to compare this to kung fu is idiotic

all demonstrations whether free hand or with some sort of instrument like knife or stick or so are shown with defenders being active and the attacker staying idle after the first movement so the defender can show the defense ! but that defense may not work in the real life situation as the attacker would be much more dynamic and aggressive than in the demonstration and there can be a very high probability that there will be multiple hits within moments making the defender weaker with every strike ! there is no point demonstrating defenders to know and do every move and the attacker staying more or less idle ! i don't understand how students get benefited from such training ! better avoid fighting when the position is not equal or one is a bit too strong to absorb multiple hits and still get the attacker down ! bare hand against bare hand ! instruments against instruments ! and sometimes it is better to learn to run faster ! cheers :)

Yes I do. This was an impromptu 15 minute presentation at Grandmaster Bobby Taboada's World Camp in 2015. I taught 7 minutes and they trained 7 minutes. He asked me to show some material and I came up with this on the fly. We train against all manner of attacks and will actual fight with the material (ie varied attacks, resisting opponents, etc.) but training has to start somewhere. You are right about the key board warriors though. LOL. I am a combat veteran and have trained plenty of military including Army SF guys as well as cops and we all know the same thing. When it comes to ANY skills development, you have to learn to crawl before you walk, and then walk before you run. I don't believe for a second that there computer commandos are going to the gym and banging out life or death training sessions. LOL Also, I am a big proponent of concealed carry and of the philosophy of run first. There if there is no reason to stay or you are not trapped, leave! I have another video where I talk about that. But sure, next time I will try to distill 20 years of experience into a 7 minute long clip for their approval. LOL

These dojo techniques to need be refined for as if you are fighting someone who knows what they are doing rather then a street thug that way you can demolish both and are always prepared rather then first do this then do this then do this blah blah blah and your body is so much infront or next to the knife it’s no funny! Whenever I critique a knife defense video they always tell me that 99% of knife attacks are wild thrusting lunges by the untrained.
@jimlowe5433
@jimlowe5433 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if the correct percentage is truly 99% or not, but most attacks are by those who have not trained in-depth. Most would not need to train, as any sharp object could be used to attack another person with. There are times when we can get so enamored in our training that we forget the reality of an attack. The attack as far as lunges can be as simple as the continuous stab to the abdomen up close, or an attack to the side of your abdomen. Usually the attack will be a total surprise. We train for the surprises, and hope for the best.
