Thank you for your response ! I know about oyster hood poisoning all too well! Haven’t eaten them in eons !!! Haven’t heard about your liquid rooting hormone so I’m going on line to check it out ! Air layering lots this season for upgrades to my garden club camellia collection ! Will continue to watch you channel , you’re very precise and informative Plus your closeups and audio are excellent!! Many other blogs out there aren’t as professional as yours !!!

One of my favorite things about your videos is your willingness to tell viewers when you don't know how to do something and that you have to research it. It shows that gardening is always a learning process for all of us and makes me feel less alone when I have no idea what I'm doing. :)

You should have said” we all have different techniques but thank you for your input “ or something like that ! No offense given! Past president of Gville camellia society and member for over 35 years ! Have over 350 camellia varieties in my personal collection alone worked at San Felasco nurseries ( gville) and learned propagation from renowned propagaterBest regards and keep up your information very in-depth and personal aura surrounds you ! You are correct, and I apologize for my rude comment. Please forgive me- I tried to write a better response but was coming down with food poisoning from oysters. I should have waited and replied from a keyboard. What I meant to say is cutting the leaves in hand in broad leaf evergreens is NOT recommended. It is fine for deciduous plants, but is not the best method for broadleaf evergreens.

I've never had a mist house nor even heard of such a wee beastie. Mostly, the common approach is to do your cuttings as normal and then place a polythene bag over the top, taking care to make sure it's not touching the cuttings. I tend to use either a two or three litre empty fizzy drinks bottle in place of the polythene bag. Take an empty bottle, remove the label, and mark a line using a marker pen roughly 2½cm above the indentation that you'll find near the base of the bottle. The line is a guide for cutting the base away from the top half. Once you have your base and top, poke holes for drainage in the base & cut two vertical slits on opposite sides of the base of the top half, roughly 2½-3cm long. Insert whatever it is that you're intending to grow - seeds, cuttings, plants for potting on - into the growing media of choice in the base. Take the top half, place (over) the (outside) of the base so that it sits comfortably on it without coming off. Remove the bottletop, stretch some sort of fine mesh - old tights, plastic netting from garlic multipacks (it's what I use), over the bottle opening, secure with a rubber band, & replace the lid just firmly enough so that it doesn't come off. The fine mesh is to keep the slugs and snails out. As with any other propagation, wait until you see signs of growth, gently watering as needed. Once you can see good root development & the contents look as though they're trying to escape out of the top to go on their holidays. Remove the lid, wait 10 days, remove the top half, wait 10 days, then either plant out or pot on accordingly; this is just meant as the hardening off process. You can as I often do, leave the filled bottles in the greenhouse, or if you don't have a greenhouse, a sunny windowsill or sunny sheltered spot in the garden should do nicely. I've been using this method, initially out of financial necessity, but now out of choice, as the go to method with great success for over 25yrs; no method is foolproof but this has been extremely useful to me. Once empty, I use a rounded headed toilet brush, dish detergent and cold water to clean out the bottles for reuse, rinsing out before leaving aside to dry or if in a hurry, a rag to dry them.The cut edges of the plastic bottles remains sharp for decades so either use gloves or take care not to cut yourself. You don't have to use a rounded headed toilet brush, but it helps as it fits the curvature of the bottles making this a much faster job.

It’s great that works for you. I was a professional plant propagator in the nursery industry therefore I use a more technical process for my production needs.

@@BrieThePlantLady That makes perfect sense. 👍

I was always taught and read that your “ dip” was to be put into a smaller container for not contaminating your main source of rooting matter ! Also sterilize your utensils with each variety being propagated ! Also recommended that all leaves remaining on cutting were to be cut in half for less stress! What is your success rate doing what you’ve shown in this video ?? Thanks and feedback appreciated

Great video Brie! I’ve been wondering what my missing link was in propagating camellias and now I know, it’s the mist chamber. Guess hitting cuttings multiple times a day with a mist spray bottle is not enough 😂 Thanks for the demo!

If camellia root cuttings can be done so easily, why are camellias grafted, besides flowering faster? Are some varieties weak and need a strong root stock?
@carolhendley7603 жыл бұрын
I propagated 2 camellias in much the same way. I don’t have a mist system, but I kept them under a shrub ( even during winter-zone 8b) and kept them wet. I set one out too soon and lost it. The other, I potted up and am going to plant next spring.
@BrieThePlantLady3 жыл бұрын
Yes I’ve made the mistake of planting them too early and they don’t make it.

Few questions: How big of a cutting can you propagate from a camallia? Does it have to be the softer new/newer growth where the nodes are etc... Can i root a branch? Also, i imagine you can only clone it so many times before genetics start to get wonky? Im currently planning a big landscaping job
@BrieThePlantLady11 ай бұрын
Did you watch the full video? No you cannot root a branch. The cutting should be 5 nodes long with two nodes underground. They need to be stuck mid summer and it’s the spring flush slightly hardened that roots best. You can propagate from plants forever there is no expiration date on a plant producing viable new growth as long as it’s healthy. .
@noliaroots237811 ай бұрын
@@BrieThePlantLady I did, I've never propagated a camellia. I've been working in the cannabis industry some years now. Their genetics get weaker after a 'decent' amount of cuttings. Similarly you want to propagate near the nodes but it only increases the success rate. I have a big landscaping job with most the plants they want in my back yard. Like I said the plants I work with only give you a certain amount of viable clones so I just want to be 200% before I chopy chop haha. As well my schooling didn't cover every species so I just wanted to be certain.

What season is the best for propagating camellia?

Middle of summer. Semi hardened softwood.

Hi Brie! I can’t find a video by you on the details of your greenhouse/shade house. Would love more information about it. I find it difficult to manage my seed starts during the growing season when I don’t want to use my indoor grow lights. But outside they are subject to animals, aggressive rain, excessive heat, etc. Zone 7/8

I have just bought a mist timer and I have a place to set up a mist tent but for how many weeks (months?) must the cuttings be misted? I don’t think I can ensure that my hose and mist system will endure freezing temps in the winter. I am in North Raleigh.
@BrieThePlantLady2 жыл бұрын
They should only need to be misted for 2-3 months. I don’t keep my mist in when the temps get cold because the pipes will break!

Hello, thank you for your video. :) I just have two questions:1) I live in the San Francisco East Bay suburbs and it becomes warm in March. Taking under consideration of this zone, when would be the best time to propagate my Sasanquas? 2)If I cannot set up a misting system, it there an alternative so that they don't dry out?
@BrieThePlantLady2 жыл бұрын
I would check at the SFBG. they have a great camellia collection and can give regionally appropriate advice.
@clncaaquintero35952 жыл бұрын
when do you propagate?Is it too late in zone 8B this November?
@BrieThePlantLady2 жыл бұрын
Yes way too late. Cuttings are best stuck in mid summer July-august regardless of your zone.

Would love to learn this skill but I don't want or need a complicated setup or a big green house. Any suggestions for a setup that doesn't require constant access to power or water.

It’s really quite difficult to root roost plants without a mist system. You can tour herbaceous things in the axe with a humidity done but very few trees/ shrubs will propagate that way.
@billgonzalez44272 жыл бұрын
There are actually small humidity domes that can be purchased at any hydroponic store
