I'm retired Air Force (MSgt) and I was a weapons loader. I have 15 years on the F4C/E/G. When he said he didn't know what half the switches were for, that reminded me when work EOR (recovery). I asked to pilot if he fired his gun. He was honest and said "I didn't, I forgot how to set up the switches". I told him, select guns on your select panel and put master to arm and then pull the trigger. We were a training base, George AFB, CA.

He was one Great Guy to all the troops on the flight line.I served under him 1967/68 Ubon RTAFB I worked in aircraft airframe Repair and Patched Bullet holes on his Bird and Flack Damage all the time as he loved to fly low to the ground just to scare the crap out of the enemy when he would see them on the ground. That was one of his favorite stories to tell.HE Loved his Troops.

General Olds is a TRUE American hero, not these dumb athletes nowadays! It’s because of men like General Olds that every American needs to stand for our National Anthem. Every middle school should show videos of General Olds and other men like him.

Idiots like Brittney Griner compared to Robin Olds no contest. It's sad that almost all the WW II Veterans have passed away. All of them are hero's, what sacrifice they made. I'm sure for them to see the utter disrespect for the Flag and National Anthem of the United States of America brings sadness, and disbelief.

Times like these make me so goddam proud to be just a nobody american. Makes me clean up after myself a little more... Dress a little better. Stand a little taller. Heros arent on baseball cards or gong shows. Heros like General Olds are America. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things and recounting them as though they couldve done them better. And i sit here with my smart phone bitching to my friends about the weather like the rest of my spoiled and equally entitled fools. I supposed it always takes initiative to gain perspective but damn how little it takes to lose it.

Robin Olds must be the only fighter pilot who flew missions in WW2 and then came back to fly many missions in modern a modern jet the F-4 Phantom which was only recently retired from service.

nah, he deliberately held off. He knew the press and Higher command would pull him out of Vietnam for a publicity tour and he didn't want that.
