I was stationed at Norton AFB in California thru Jan 1973. In 1972 I had the privilege of joining Gen Olds and others at a table for drinks and socializing. The stories he told were not only remarkable, but true. An experience I will never forget. GOD bless you Gen Olds!

Love the story related about BGen. Olds by Ltc. Dan Hampton (Ret.) in Lords of the Sky. He told how then Colonel Olds was returning from a mission.He got to the tanker and after taking a little fuel he allowed his flight to take their fuel. When it was his turn the tanker pilot said that they had given their limit, retracted the boom and there was no fuel for him. After basically pleading to no avail and with only 3 minutes of fuel left he dropped back, told the tanker pilot that he had one sidewinder left and just before he punched out he was going to trigger it. The boom came down immediately.

A real gentleman! He started out flying piston aircraft in combat, and lived long enough to see a man walk on the moon, and the Berlin Wall to come down. His leadership in SE Asia saved many lives. He perfectly grasped the problem with political correctness.

I disagree completely,you would need to give them something that they would willingly fight for and I don't think the current rabble in Washington are worth even one drop of blood from one of our kids. Robin Olds' generation were fighting for a just cause,there is no doubt about that,they were very lucky in that respect,Subsequent generations have been fighting for the corporate "rights of the U.S,U.K etc

but, heres the thing he did not realize at the time. All those brave men, everybody that went to Vietnam and sacrificed, dont ever think for a second that it was in vain, thats the reason why we North Americans are on top. Im from Canada, but its so obvious to me all that was the reason why were so advanced. if it didnt happen, we might not be able to go outside right now and know we are safe. God bless you guys, youre the reason we live in the best place in the whole world. The united states gets so much critisizim, but they in my view are the only reason why this world is still habitable. You cant make everyone happy, but we try for sure. anybody who talks shit about United States or Canada just wishes they could live here. and one more thing, I thought Obama was awesome. Im talking about everything he did as a president, but as a man.

Question, at 7:33 Robin states that he landed back at March after the accident that killed Pappy and Pappy's Wife was there when he landed. According to the account of the accident Herbst's new wife witnessed the accident, as did his 13-year-old son Tommy. Both rushed to aid in the rescue, but Herbst died shortly after the accident in a nearby naval hospital. Anyone know more about this accident?

I hope he just wasn’t thinking when he said he didn’t care if Iraq’s chemical weapons were blown up as long as the resulting cloud blew in the direction of Israel before he said or Syria or Iran.
@anthonyrobinson77435 жыл бұрын
FlaLawdog , if you heard the complete answer he said that it wasn’t our war and wasting Americans in a conflict that has gone on for thousands of years and will keep going long after we’re gone is a waste of lives. He listed all countries in the area but didn’t prioritize them in any order, it’s just how they came out. He had spoken about this many times before. Thus was edited and when that happens it always sounds different to those who haven’t heard the whole interview or have heard it before. A warrior is the most disgusted by war of anyone, if you’ve never seen it you don’t understand how much it affects you. General Olds lost many friends and did his best to bring back every one of his men. Having had four commands I know he wasn’t thinking about the countries involved. A commanders most important mission is to bring back every one if his people to their families. The politicians are the ones who uphold countries that often don’t deserve it.

Famous US fighter pilot Hub Zemke told a story about P 47s strafing a train. What made it interesting is the fact that he was a passenger on the train at the time as a POW. The train was a mixed bag of woman, children, prisoners and guards. The carnage was obscene.
