Thanks for the video. I've spent the past several days trying to figure out what was wrong after replacing a leaking gas tank on my mower. I had also replaced the primer bulb assembly, air filter, fuel line and gasket between the air filter base since they were several years old. This mower has always started after one or two pulls after priming but it refused to start without a lot of work. I liked your trick for testing the carb priming port using carb or brake cleaner. I had already used compressed air but the visual really helps confirm it's clear. My problem was the gasket around the primer channel was not properly sealing. I ended up making a second gasket and was extra careful not to over tighten the screws holding the carb on. It now primes like it should instead of sucking air and works perfectly. Thanks again!

Great video. Saved the day. After replacing carb, mower would only start with starting fluid and ran great! Searched YT for help and ran across yours once I figured out it was primer related. Tried all your suggestions except double seal and still nothing. Took it back apart and used old seal and new seal that came with carb. Used compressor and got gas before I put filter back on. Then used primer and there was gas!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Trying to keep from taking a couple of old mowers to the dump. Your's and other repairman's "trick" Damn sure works!!!!!!Halleluja! Amen!!!! This was an '06 Craftsman 6.75 and the other is an '10 Snapper 6.75. My new one is a '18 Snapper 7.75 Professional model. Think I'll see if I can get the ol'Craftsman rototiller running now!😂😂

Thank you so much! With the help of your concise explanation, I was finally able to pin down the exact cause of my problem. My plastic air cleaner housing indeed had a slight warp where the air channel goes across the flange (6 o'clock position) to transfer pressure to the air hole on the carb flange. I only realized the housing was warped after closely inspecting the indentation on my used gasket and noticed where it wasn't quite making a complete air-tight seal. I had a spare gasket, so I doubled up two gaskets as you suggested, and put on a very thin smear of Hondabond for good measure. Now my primer works better than a new one! You have a great teaching style. Instead of just saying "do this to fix it", you were able to explain how everything worked and the theory of operation in under 10 minutes.

I've used some silicone on the back side of the filter box at the bottom of the gasket instead of 2 gaskets and it worked.

you are so right!! I bought a new carburetor and filter backing plate w/ primer and it still would not prime. I sealed the bottom of the gasket like you showed and it works perfectly. Thanks again for you video.

I added some cuts of tape to the back of the gasket to thicken that part so it has more pressure to be able to seal. Seems to work.

I never thought that the gasket would cause a problem with the primer bulb. Doubling the gaskets is a great idea. I'm learning something new every day.

An easy way to see if the primer passage is clear is to put a little water or spit on it, press the bulb. If it bubbles, your good. You can also put a piece of clear packing tape over the air channel, and trim it so just the channel is covered, with just the upper end uncovered so the primer can puff a little air Into the bowl. Way cheaper than two gaskets. Usually works for me. Good video. .

Had the same issue. Added some RTV gasket maker to the new gasket - used soap/water as a test - got bubbles from pushing the primer bulb. Would run on just starting fluid - so I new it was the primer bulb - which "pulls" fuel into the carb. I also added small washer to the mounting plate. The e b a y kit only had 1 gasket - you think they would add a 2nd. Plus the carb primer hole is not a perfect match for my old carb. This video was helpful - thank you.

Thanks for the informative video. I knew I had a priming problem because my mower would start by using an eye dropper to squirt a little gas into the carb throat. Not having a second gasket I daubed a little grease around the part of the gasket with the air channel. Works like a champ.

I have the same carb, added 2 gaskets, torqued the bolts tightly, then tried them just snug, the primer bulb is blasting air, all of the ports in the carb have been cleaned. Sprayed cleaner through the same air opening you did and it shot out of the emulsion tube. It still does not work. The only thing I can think is to do is apply a bit of sealant to the ridges of the air cleaner housing the air flows through.

Thanks a bunch. This fixed my problem when I found it only started with starting fluid. Even previously when I soaked the carb with cleaner it didn't fix the problem until I pushed a small wire through the opening in the carb that mates with the opening in the primer bulb gasket. I was all ready to buy a new carb. Now I can cross this problem off my list.

Great video as always man. Personally I hate primer bulbs. Dirt, cracks, warped plastic ring and all that bs. I know auto choke is a bit more trouble but to me it seems easier to diagnose than primer bulbs.

Finally got mine to prime with new bulb, second gasket and some masking tape over the air channel. I can now see fuel spurting up when I press the bulb - but it still won't start!! Any ideas? Fuel is good, spark plug and air filter are only a few months old.

Hey guy Could use a direction. I have a fs130 bought new yrs ago and It has been put thru a lot. It seemed to be getting weaker and during last use she died after an hour of use. I replaced air filter, cleaned and checked Spark plug, cleaned spark arrest screen and issue unchanged. She pull turns over like usual. I thought I should check valve adj. There was (no) play in valves at top dead. Adjusted using the Stihl Flr gauge. Once done I almost, cannot pull hard enough to turn engine. I removed cover and cam gear- lobe and P rods look good. Symptom compares to an engine that the compression release is in-op. Not sure if a weed eater engine has such a thing. I am going to go into flywheel side this morn to (rule in or out) woodruff key, as she has been abused as a brush chopper. Any thoughts? Best; Tom

I have to say I hate the double gasket solution. I am in no way saying it doesn't work, because I have used it before, but it just bugs me why the part isn't made of foam, or double thick paper gasket in the first place. I even have used rtv sealant (Precisely placed) to seal better. I havent seen someone use a wire to clean that hole out before, so that's a trick I will try in the future. Thanks for the vid!

Don't see many primer mowers anymore. Everything has gone or is going to the autochoke system. Too bad because it was a reliable starting system. But I have also had to seal the gasket against the housing using 2 and, in one case, 3 gaskets.

I have found over the years that is is better to spend a little extra money on a Honda, Toro, John Deere etc. Brand names seem to last longer than Murray, Craftsman Yardman. These are less expensive for a reason.

Gravity. Incline the carburetor side of the mower a bit uphill. If the carb is actually dumping excess fuel out of the venturi, the needle and seat are probably not sealing. Internal cleaning necessary. Usually you find a bit of an impurity wedged itself in the valve. As the bowl fills, the float exerts more force on the speck and really holds it there. One of the tricks we learned to do with motorcycles is shut off the fuel, drain the float bowl and turn on the fuel for a couple seconds, purging the needle valve. Works pretty well.
