thanks for the video, that was sure faster than it worked when I did it,, I think part of my problem was I didn't have a small screw driver, in my case it's almost harder to reinstall the clip but I never tried using that slot like you did,, thanks again.

I have no idea what the original gear looked like for the number of teeth but the plastic one used to replace it is already broken after only 1 year. Is there a way to look up what the original gear was? I’m thinking it didn’t last because it was the wrong one. Thx.

Hi Paul. Yes there is. Using the first two sets of numbers on the ID tag (click here for where to look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2W3YYpom62Fmrc) you can then go here: www.briggsandstratton.com/na/en_us/support/manuals.html to enter your engine identifying numbers and download your parts manual which will have the needed part number for your starter gear and other parts you may need in the future. You did a good demonstration here I am fighting with trying to get the ring off on a Kohler vtwin starter. Similar to this but, seems hard and I have messed with it all day trying to get it off. What exactly did you do to that screwdriver and how did you do that

I ground the tip with a radius to match the shaft radius and flattened it down enough that I can get the modified driver between the ring and starter armature. Hope you get it! Some can be a real pain. Cheers!! Zip~

Nice video. I lost that tiny ring it flew away like nothing (it happened before I watched this video) I don't know where to find something similar to replace it...damn

You can purchase a new clutch that will come with a new snap ring or, you can drill the shaft at the ring groove and install a roll pin to keep everything together. I feel your pain. I've lost a few in my day too. Just search Briggs and Stratton starter clutch and you want to match the type appearance wise as well as by counting the number of teeth on the clutch and making sure you order one with the same number. Easier way is to take a 9mm socket over the top and tap it. It goes right back on.

Thanks for all of your videos They are great. Have you ever made a video showing us how to check whether a briggs coil is good or bad when it is off the engine and on the bench? I have a B&S 243431 from an AC Big Ten with no spark. I know of several gentlemen just in my home town that would benefit from a video of this nature. Thank you very much...
