Thank you. This saved my vacation this summer. Bendix wouldn't engage day 2 of vacation. New starter not available for two weeks. Watched this video, tapped bendix lightly with wrench. Unfroze and engaging. Back to fun.

My starter quit engaging with the flywheel on my 1998 Nissan Frontier P/U. Thought it was my battery so tried a jump with same results. Looked at several vids on KZbin and found your explanation on how it all works. I plan to follow your procedure and hope to get it working again without buying a new starter. Excellent explanation, now I can troubleshoot more effectively. Thanks.

Just watched this and my eyes were opened! My boat is in the harbor, I invite people out fishing and the Bendix spins every other time. Frustrating in the dark early am. I've been pulling the cowling off, tapping the starter motor (couldn't think of what else to do) and it would engage. Once warm it would engage all day. Now it seems clear that cleaning is needed. Excellent teaching style- I subscribed.

Have a 1973 Allis-Chalmers tractor with a marginal starter. Was going to buy a replacement starter, but contacted a friend of mine who knows this stuff better than I do. He suggested WD-40 be sprayed on the shaft/gear to address what you mentioned: gummed up works. I haven't tried it yet, but your video was very thorough and helpful, showing me the details of this. Very helpful. Thanks for posting. :)

100% correct. I have had this problem for years. Lubed the bendix. Changed the cables. No help. Changed the Bendix. Solved the problem. The backside of the teeth were worn, and as the engine "coughed" the bendix lost the bite on the flywheel teeth, and the bendix dropped out. Thanks for the good video!

Can’t say how thankful I am for this video. My Ford Focus has been having a stuttering starting issue and from day one I figured it was probably something within the starter based on the symptoms. I posted all my symptoms on some Ford forums and everyone just pointed me towards my battery over and over. This excess friction on the starter motor shaft is definitely my problem.

ThankYou! Went through the joy of a ring gear install in my 77 401ci Jeep that resulted in starting to chew it up again , As the Jeep was my fathers whom has passed , my urge to convert it to an anchor was not a option . New ring gear , starter , trans and case bushings , fasteners , all installed correctly with good engine mounts . And the trouble surfaced again . To date I must say I have taken a bit of a beating from this starter issue . I recall my Dad saying "Don't care if it looks like the same part or what color the wires hoses or plugs are , "Ya just gotta know how it works is all , That's the first step to fixing something . Got no business out here in the shop if ya haven't learned it yet" . You have reminded me how right he was . You obviously have done your homework and mine . I browsed KZbin at random today and I not only found your post , it made total sense . For what its worth if I win the lotto your on my good list ! Cant thank you enough for your posting . Armed with your explanation I now have the problem where it needs to be , Somewhere else ! And I am a believer you cant afford not to spend the extra monies for top shelf parts . You and Bosch are my new friends . Good Luck and I ThankYou! again

I just wanted to say thank you. I have some old Gravely mowers from the 70s. I'm great at destroying things but am clueless when it comes to diagnosing and repairing things. My dad couldn't put a nail in straight. You either tinker with things and figure it out or you're taught. Since neither were available I do what most do. Hire someone to do it. So looking at your videos along with a few others on KZbin stuffs running. I'm blown away. There are others that have great presentations but don't say a word. How to put in a transmission at 10X the speed and I'm a mute. Not only do you explain what to do you explain why you're doing it. Hey theory behind it. I've also worked on 2 of my outboards. Now I don't have to hear my buddies giving me shit. You flew helicopters in the Army and you're an Airline pilot. What the hell that's supposed to mean I don't know. You don't have to be bright to fly, look at me. I can teach a monkey how to fly in 5 minutes but most of us don't know jack. Thank God pilots have tricked people into believing that they're smart. The mechanics get all the shit and none of the glory. Even I'm bright enough to realize that my life's in their hands. So I always make sure their happy. Funny how none of my equipment was ever down. Even if I brought it in trashed. Magically it was fixed but one of the other ships mysteriously had the broken part I flew in with. Thanks again for all the info.
