TY for the video. I have a 2004 JD with the same engine (or one very very similar). Still runs great but it has needed some maintenance over the years.

Hey Joe, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this mini playlist of videos as they'll be super helpful for me. I just got an older Craftsman lawn tractor that has this exact engine which was swapped into it at some point. The motor's got a pretty bad sump cover gasket leak and I'm considering adding the nipple for an oil filter. At 1:09:00, do you have any idea what that bolt with the square head goes to? Do you think removing it would somehow make it easier to remove the cover where the filter goes? Thanks a lot.

Sorry, I meant 1:09:02.
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliments! That square headed bolt is very likely just a plug for an oil pressure port. Sometimes manufacturers put oil pressure switches or transducers in there, the former for engine kill on low oil pressure, the latter for an oil pressure gauge. Removing it won't make the oil filter conversion any easier. That cover was tough to remove because it was loctited in place. I'm still kind of baffled like breaks and Stratton would include a sump cover designed to take an oil filter, but block the oil filter off

@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC Ok, thanks for the info. I agree that it's odd how B&S made the sump this way. If you still have this motor, has it been running well since you've rebuilt it with the oil filter added on?

Congratulations, a lesson! I have a 21hp vertical shaft lawn mower. Can I make any modifications to the lubricating oil intake and perhaps change the position of the intake manifold and the carburetor so that the engine can work in the horizontal crankshaft position? What do you think? A hug from the middle of the Brazilian Amazon! Thank you very much! Cadu

Probably not the best of ideas unfortunately. There are a lot of things that are different between vertical shaft and horizontal shaft engines.

Joe question i have the V Twin Intek 20 hp 406-777 i have a masive leak pulled the motor thinking i was going to get a gasket kit with the crank seals cant find one any subjestions thank you
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 2 жыл бұрын
To clarify, you are looking for the mag and PTO crankshaft seals, correct? If so, the gasket set linked in the description includes them and should fit the 406777. If you JUST want the crankshaft seals: Magneto side: amzn.to/3wtYmxm PTO side: amzn.to/3NgXrqm Be careful when fitting the crank into the PTO seal - it is easy to roll it. I'd recommend packing the seal with grease prior to installation.

I'm working on a yard machine with what I believe is the same engine. Doesn't appear that it has a compression relief on the cam now that I watched you disassemble it. Now has me wondering, I can't get mine to start unless you rotate the crank.
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. Engine will not start unless the crankshaft is rotated using the electric starter.
@chrisminter7776
@chrisminter7776 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC A number of those have a compression relief on the cam because the small electric starter cannot overcome the compression. Works on centrifugal force. They often break off. Mimics a dead or low battery.

@@chrisminter7776 correct. I guess I just didn't understand what you meant when you said "I can't get mine to start unless you rotate the crank". I have seen compression release mechanisms break before causing the problem that you're describing.

Hey man can you run these type engines in the upright position like a sideshaft engine
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 2 жыл бұрын
This is a vertical shaft engine, meaning the crankshaft must be vertical when the engine is mounted. I have never seen a 4 stroke engine that could be mounted vertically or horizontally. The major limiting factor here is the lubrication system.

i am asuming PTO is the crank shaft that the electrick clutch is bolted to Correct
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. The "mag" side is the magneto/flywheel side. The PTO (power take off) side is the side opposite the mag side. It gets confusing on some engines that have a PTO shaft on the mag side as well. I've seen that quite a few times on Kawasaki and Kohler V-twins

I don't think I saw anything that would have kept that this from running. I would have seen that it turned by hand after taking belt off pulley and then get the booster pack and carb spray and started it up as it would probably have run in external fuel source. Then clean out carb as it needed and would be ready to put in something else. I don't take things apart that don't need to come apart
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC Жыл бұрын
Yes, agreed. Figured it would make for an interesting KZbin video to tear it down. In this case, just getting it running would have been a pretty short and boring video most likely 🙂
