As a drum corps alumni of the Falcon Cadets from Elizabeth, NJ I can think of nothing as pleasant as hearing a very good brass band playing a delicate piece with almost mystical unity... This is what heaven must sound like without having to die in order to visit...✨👍😊

ive just retired after about 13 years of brass banding (rookie numbers, I know) but I keep coming back to this piece as one of the few test pieces I've ever played that I've actually been fond of. what a marvellous performance and a wonderful piece. It's all those pedal Bbs in the bass trombone that get me. Never too many.

This is SOOOO good! The musicianship is off the charts! WOW!,

One of the best days of banding I’ve ever experienced. It was testament to how good the test piece was when you saw how full the hall remained even for the lesser ranked bands.

It was a real pleasure to be at the RAH in Sep 11 (first time in 35 years) to hear the top section play and what a piece by PLC and what a winning performance. Since finding this video I listen and watch it many times a week whilst working on my PC, it is so uplifting. Brass bands should be heard in more places and not be still tarred with the flat cap and warm beer image any longer. We need more media and radio exposure - Classic FM for a start. I been playing a cornet for over 45 years and wish to state that this performance, including mistakes (there were some) was magical, controlled, playful, powerful and deserved to win on the day. The team work across the band and not forgetting Dave King the conductor is a pleasure to see. More please.

I have this on my favourites list. Absolutely cracking piece. I don't even care about the little fluffs, I quite like that in live music. This was an absolutely epic performance.

the fluffs in this winning performance are nothing you would mark a band down for at all just stunning playing from first-last note

Love the work of Lovatt-Cooper. Brass banding is coming along in the States and it is a joy to have this entirely "new" palette of literature to explore.

The kings speech, if ever a test piece was made for a MD this was it, a G’day sheila let’s throw another shrimp on the Barbee, State of origin RL . One of bandings most memorable moments along with Corys winning performance in 2019 with Titans Progress

I am comfortable with a conductor who beats in time like this guy!! I can't cope with the guys you like to be half a beat ahead all the time! It's confusing and makes me feel insecure! What's that about?!!! I do put this down to my ignorance, of course.
@aaronwinterhoff12498 жыл бұрын
+John Cahill Unless I'm mistaken, that's David King, who was in charge of YBS when they strung together years of victories. He's an Australian, he came and conducted our band one day, and it was remarkable just how secure the piece (Year of the Dragon) seemed to be under his baton. He is a fantastic conductor. Until then, I didn't realise just how much of a difference a world-class conductor can make to a band.
@JohnCahillChapel8 жыл бұрын
Yes. IU. As a kid I often thought that if the bandmaster dropped dead the band would carry on regardless, unaffected. Later I realised that training and nuance were very important. i think the sense of security that you mention and unity as a band come from the conductor. I was never in a big band or a professional band but there seemed to develop a style of conducting whereby the conductor was never on the beat with the band (or vv). It looked and felt so uncomfortable to me that it was so hard to watch and just enjoy the music. I also found it difficult to listen to brass bands playing very long slow mood pieces that were written for stings and woodwind instruments (no clarinets etc in Salvo bands.) A lot of mood test type pieces seemed to be just like that... teats and trials. I got over a lot of that, but still, brass bands were (for me) 'supposed to be' about pomp, ceremony, parades and marching... and hymns of course. Watching bands these days the thing I appreciate most is the 'teamwork', human harmony, even more than great skill. We were very fortunate to be a small part of that.
