My son and I were in the audience for this event in NYC. All I can say is WOW! In the United States, the New York Staff Band is the brass band others aspire to be like. Growing up in The Salvation Army and getting hooked on playing an instrument quite young, my dream was to one day be a member of the NYSB. Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to be. I've always been a fan of Black Dyke and have been fortunate to see them live several times now. What a wonderful group of musicians!
@DavidLumm3 жыл бұрын
You can always tell it's Black Dyke. They have a brightness to their sound that I don't think I ever hear in a salvation army band. Also, so much control. For most bands the difference between pianissimo and fortissimo is quite small, but these guys can get quiet, and that takes skill, much more than blasting it out. I wonder if this piece has ever been used at a music school final festival? I can certainly imagine Dean Jones getting a brass group to do this justice!

As someone has already said the euphonium is a little too fast to really sell the message of its words; now, as someone who grew up in the SA; be honest with yourself; the ISB can’t hold a candle to this overall performance.

John Cahill, what’s beyond “Like”?👍 this band kills everything they play. High notes on every instrument in tune. Very difficult runs seemingly played in perfect unison. For me, a tuba/trombone player to catch myself listening to the soprano cornet, 1st tenor horn and flugelhorn parts is exciting. The icing on the cake as it were, at least from my standpoint. Extremely well done!

Very very very good. But: Is there someone here to explaine me, why I love the SWISS ARMY BRASS BAND's version more so much? It is - for me -extremely heartwarming, both the versions are, but the swissband touches me so much more. Deeply. Why? This peace of music is so ... great. I am playing 2nd trombone in a very fine BrassBand and always I get goosebumps while playing this.

Why do they use coronets and not trumpets?
@aleiakumm54567 ай бұрын
Cornets have a conic shape (instead of linear) so they have a darker sound that‘s more appealing than the timbre of a trumpet, especially in a brass band setting! 😊
