I’m a 66 YO mechanical engineer, I’ve been into the concept of sustainability since I was about 14 😊 - love all that Rethinkx is telling us - it really looks like the solutions are there for us and some real progress is being made, the wildcard is the effect of the ultra-rich, huge corporations and governments - I think organizations such as yours have a key role to play in helping these entities see the path

I'm just waiting for the day for oil demand to actually drop. It's been a bit flat lately but with the way electric cars have been going lately I am impatiently waiting for consistent demand declines.

Yes, impatient here too. But, we are approaching the valley of death for big oil and legacy auto. Expected to begin 2025 but hopefully sooner.

Great show! Two pieces of critical feedback. 1) what makes us think that the world can ever achieve a consensus on final atmospheric GHG targets? 2) the burning house analogy suffers from a key deficiency- given enough time, the earth’s biosphere will revert back to preindustrial conditions by itself. But this is academic, not practical, given the timescale!

everything you say is for me very clear and very accurate. i would say also that we need to stop relay on old systems to do it and start building new ones that will do it all.

Thanks for focusing on prosperity. Business for profit is going to be our solution. Hands down. And people want nice clean healthy lifestyles by our nature. Which means business for profit will bring just that ultimately.

Great work. Sorry to nitpick - with the blood letting analogy, it does work if you have hemochromatosis which three of my sister's children have and it may have killed my grandmother. Perhaps refine the analogy by noting that correct diagnosis and treatment is the key to quality medicine. Solar may be the main treatment in Australia with a bit of wind, while wind may be the main treatment in Scotland with a bit of solar.

Thank you Rethink X. Totally agree with the need for prosperity. Green as usual will not solve the problems of business as usual.

Interesting. Have you read The Climate Book? An important point the book covers is, if we take too long, we fail. This has to happen immediately. How can it happen fast enough?

i have fears that need addressing; Lack of political willpower to make the policy and systems changes Infinite growth on finite planet -running out of rare resources, assuming no space mining (which only delays the issue, potential issues elsewhere) Recycled plastics according to headlines i read today are worse for the environment, more toxic for all and create more micro-plastics

the point of "cutting emissions by 50%" is not to stop at that goal. it's to make a goal that seems achievable to the general public while also hitting a tipping point that will make the other 50% emissions easier to hit. if you don't understand something so basic then what exactly are you trying to accomplish with these videos? other than selling your book, I mean.
@Beckisphere Жыл бұрын
Good video overall! But I felt like you should have defined degrowth because I don’t think you gave a fair description of what that concept entails. It’s not about reverting to pandemic life, but looking beyond the need for constant growth and consumption.

The first (only real) mistake is not to realise that Energy is neither created nor destroyed, because.. it's (always NOW!), the quantization-observation of pure-math relative-timing ratio-rates forms Spacetime Circuitry of reciprocation-recirculation Singularity-point positioning in Black-body Holographic Principle Aether, ie purely functional e-Pi-i log-antilog Quantum-fields Condensates. All the rest is Commentary, Theoretical Vibration compositions of Magical Thinking Labelling of time-timing sync-duration containment density-intensity condensation, a universal bio-logical re-evolution Ecology.

I would argue mistake number one is believing in an economic model of infinite exponential growth on a planet that has a finite amount of resources. It does not matter how green we make our lifestyles, Capitalism is not sustainable. As the brave young lady has stated many times? You cannot make deals with physics.
@realrift01 Жыл бұрын
We can continue to grow and use abundant resources (like lithium for example) with carbon neutrality. What we cannot do is continue with the current energy sources like coal and gas. As Adam Dorr explains in his book "Brighter", prosperity is required to continue to solve the problems we face as species. This has historically always been the case and will continue to be so.
@davefroman4700 Жыл бұрын
@@realrift01 Someone obviously has no idea about how interconnected we are to nature. Its not just our energy that is wasteful. 50% of the food we produce is thrown out in shipping waste and oversupply of lucrative markets, where its thrown out when not sold. Not to mention that nearly 70% of everything a consumer buys is engineered to be in the landfill in less than 5 years. And 20% of that is ending up in the landfill just to make room for the next product cycle. By scientific scales of performance? Capitalism is the LEAST efficient system of resource management that the human species has created in history!
@realrift01 Жыл бұрын
@@davefroman4700 foodwaste ≠ capitalism. Food waste is a serious issue though. Also on the topic of food, one would be aware the most sustainable diet for the environment is a plant-based diet.
@davefroman4700 Жыл бұрын
@@realrift01 Capitalism results IN food waste. Without the profit motive, we would not be starving poorer nations so the rich can throw it away. And capitalism does not solve problems. It perpetuates problems for profits. If you actually solve a problem for ever? There is no way to profit from it.
@jonseddon4547 Жыл бұрын
Capitalism is sustainable only until you reach the limits of the finite system, which is where I believe we're approaching now in so many ways. Whether it's the planet's climate passing key tipping points and moving into a new pattern of behaviour, or mass global migration triggered by growing wealth inequality, I'm not so sure we can assume the old patterns can carry on forever

Where will the ressources coming from? Where will the energy come from? To many unknowns. Geopolitics is a major factor too. What if china says no more rare earth for european car brands because EU sanctions chinese companies for trading with russia. Russia as a major supplier of raw materials is out for now ..maybe for a long time. This so called disruption and energy transition won't happen as Seba predicts it. If it happens at all it, will take much longer than predicted.
@user299792 Жыл бұрын
There will be solutions. Rare earths are not so rare, and engineers will find ways to get enough of them elsewhere and engineers will develop motors and generators which don‘t need them at all. Where is a will, there is a way. Innovation solves problems.
