Here is a short video on the 1958 Beetle. She turns 60 in 2018! Well really she turned 60 in August of '57, but I digress. =o)
This is a milestone for the '58 bug as it was the first year of the "Big" windows, surpassing the oval bug. This video points out the characteristic changes of that year over the previous oval bugs.

About 50 years ago, maybe a little less, I saw a split window that had been chopped into a Baja Bug. I had a really hard time with controlling myself and not ripping the head off the young kid driving it.

I had a 1958 VW in high school in 1968. I put a Judson Supercharger on it and it would actually go over 80 mph. Traded it in on a Datsun 1200 in 1971. I got $ 300 on the trade. Wish I had both of these cars now. They were simple and fun cars.

Where do you live? Brasil maybe? Because in Europe and the US the 1500 cc was introduced in 1967, and in México it was introduced in 1968

I have one of these but the front turn signals work by flashing the white parking light bulbs, it doesn’t have the fender mounted type.

I have learned a lot, I have inherited from my parents a Brazilian year 1975; but I'm after a 58 that unfortunately has been modified too much, I just have one question, I understand that the headlights in the "oval window" years had the VW logo and the Bosh ring, in this case you mention that it is the same but I have not seen the same shape or the details of the logos that I mentioned; Or is it really there that it changed? Thank you very much for your comments, and very grateful for your video, despite the fact that you published it in 2017, I was only able to see it, I hope you help me with that question. Thank you for your message, I appreciate it. The reason for asking this is because I had 50 years ago a 1967 Karmann Ghia convertible. It had a new convertible top put on it, and it was still leaking water in the back of the car, behind the back rest witch you could fold down. There was a little compartment there where the water was coming in from. Could it be possible that I had drain tubes back there that were clogged up? I could never find out why that was and now maybe I found my answer. Let me know Chris what you think.

It looks to still be 6v. Could you do a video on how to make 6v work? What kind of Niehoff regulator and do you need to tweak it at all, are there LED headlights and bulbs available, what voltage do you get coming out of the regulator, do you have a full 6V getting to the tailights or do you have voltage drop by that point, etc?

It is still 6v. A video on how to make 6v work? No LEDs here, just standard bulbs. The regulator will push around 6.2-6.4 or so when idling. If you rev it, it should go over 7.2 or so, sometimes higher.

Hi Chris (and Chris :) ), I have a '58 356 that is 6V and aside from a headlight relay and starter relay, 6V works just fine as long as all the connections and switches and such are really clean. I run one of the Optima 6V batteries and keep it on a tender during the winter. The VR is 22A and the generator is standard 200W Bosch. I did install LED tail lights for safety and then had to install a solid state blinker, but that was a plug in replacing a non-original part. I hope that helps... Franny

Either that, or wait till it starts to buck and die from starvation, and then flip over the gas reserve to give you another 30 miles to go get gas.

Gotta love german engineering. Where is that reserve tank stored? somewhere above the normal tank? or inside the gas tank?

no real reserve tank, the fuel tap itself has two tubes, one taller then the other that are inside the tank. Once the gas goes below the taller tube, the lil one is left to move gas through.
