I honestly feel like Nightheart is trying to convince himself that he loves Sunbeam so he can switch clans and avoid dealing with his issues. His monologue/thought process doesn't seem like he is actually in love with her, it is almost a secondary motivation to his fleeing to ShadowClan. He just wants a friend who doesn't look at him and see Firestar.

"Finchlight and Sparkpelt are his literal sister and mom, why can't he just talk to them." Giving my own two cents on the "just talk to family" thing. Sometimes, words just aren't enough. Finchlight literally told her own brother to get lost, and calls him dramatic when he's venting his frustration. As someone who has been called dramatic by her own siblings when in that same exact situation, that felt like a very natural progression of ish hitting the fan. One time, between me and my sister, it got to the point, where I screeched that I bet they'd be happier if I were unsubscribed from life. And again, the sister didn't take me seriously. I never did anything of course, but everyone BUT her realized I was being serious. Just like how Finchlight didn't take Nightheart seriously. And when you vent your actual thoughts and feelings to your family, only for them to either ignore you or brush you off, that's enough to lessen that trust, or break it completely, thus leading you to confide in others. That's why I love Nightheart. He's not your perfect squeaky clean, morally good cat. He's got some major mental issues going on. He seriously wants a male figure in his life, evident by how much Alderheart's words mean to him. And how much he liked having Bramblestar's attention. His family is shunning him, so why should he put forth that effort to make the communication happen? I don't think Nightheart really loves Sunbeam, not yet at least. I think the two would be good together, but right now it just seems more like infatuation than love.

This. After the argument they had on the first chapter, it's no wonder he doesn't want to talk to them anymore. On the other hand, Bayshine was pointed out as brother-like to him in River, so it makes sense he would be sad to see him leave.

I have also had this problem in the past, but no one wanted me to yell. So I kept it quiet. And when I finally snapped, and said that I wanted to commit the unalive everyone realized how much anger and hate was rolling in waves off of me. I has been a few years since that incident, and we are on much better terms. I hope everything works out in the end for you.

What I took from the book is that Nightheart is using Sunbeam as an *excuse* to switch clans. Not necessarily because he loves her more than anything. The chapter where he decides to join ShadowClan sounded more as if he was contemplating whether or not he would end up truly loving Sunbeam, so that his change of clans could be justified. What I'm hoping is that he realises that he and Sunbeam don't match and that he goes back to ThunderClan and fixes his relationship with his family.

Honestly me too. I think cats should be allowed to move clans without being in love with another cat. It feels very much like hes using her now. Not saying he doesnt care for her but he never considered her a mate until he needed an excuse to leave Thunderclan

I agree! While his move is definitely justified given the Firestar descendant crap he had to deal with in Thunderclan, romance is a pretty unnecessary and boring reason for it. Given that we JUST had a cross clan relationship in the last arc, and the Erin's writing of it isn't exactly the best. I was honestly hoping that sun and night would stay strictly as good friends who bond after night's move, but it doesn't seem like that'll happen.....

I feel bad for Nightheart quite honestly. He doesn’t deserve the treatment he’s getting from Squirrelflight, Sparkpelt, and Finchlight. I never liked Sparkpelt, but the way she treats her own SON is what hardened my dislike for her into hate. Finchlight is just as bad, she’s Nightheart’s sister, but yet she treats Nightheart as if he was a dumb kit. In the second book of A Vision of Shadows, Sparkpelt receives her Warrior name. Graystripe is heard stating that he thought Sparkpelt would be named Sparkfire in honor of Firestar because she looks so much like him, but no, they had to make a black cat that doesn’t even look like Firestar take on that duty. I honestly don’t get it. Bramblestar doesn’t name his daughter after Firestar, but yet he chose his daughter’s black-pelted son to be named after him? Like seriously, Bramblestar, YOU CAN DO BETTER!!!!

Honestly… I just finished the book and reading nightheart and sunbeams final chapters, when they think about each other, I don’t see any romance, at all. I see two cats who have spent their entire life looking for love, and it always being just out of reach. Sunbeam in a romantic partner, and nightheart with his kin and thunderclan. Sunbeam has always been the one showing affection, and thinking that she and blazefire were in love. She can’t sort out her feelings, and can’t figure out her thoughts between wanting to be annoyed with both blazefire and lightleap, but still wanting to care about them and love them, even if just platonically. Meanwhile nightheart has even bigger problems. He’s never met his father, and due to larksongs death, his mother was relatively absent from his life. From there any interaction between this mother and her kit are very awkward and strained, and become slowly more hostile, with each failed assesment, and being fully aggressive when he changed his name. He’s always felt like the outlier, and never been shown respect or love, platonic, family, or romantically. So the way I see NightSun is that they both just want to be friends. They both just need some cat to lean on, and to confide in at the end of a long day, and while I agree that could be a interesting romance, this isn’t the case with this. They both just want the other as a friend, and want to escape their burdens. I honestly would love it if after the catmint journey, nightheart became so attracted to life outside the clans that he left, but every once in a while would sneak onto shadowclan territory, to chat with the one cat who he could trust. I don’t see any romance, just two exhausted cats who want the other as a friend but don’t know how to discern platonic love and romantic love.

I didn’t read the book, just the wikis but… I’m disappointed. When the idea of Nightheart leaving ThunderClan came up, then obvious choice in my mind was to go to WindClan. My reasons being who’s in WindClan that can connect with him. In ShadowClan, Tawnypelt knows what’s like to be judged for you past/kin as well as how hard it is to switch Clans, but she did seem to have some kind of respect for Firestar, so she would probably judge him to some extent. Also, I didn’t WANT NightSun, I wanted Sunbeam to STAY SINGLE after having such a bad break up! It’s like the Erin’s can’t fathom the idea of a woman being single because she chooses to be. Like, Mousefur was that first and last she-cat to stay single before too many Firestar and Cloudtail cats filled ThunderClan for there to be effective shipping that doesn’t need a family tree to map out. And medicine cats don’t count because they’re single by their own law. SkyClan as it is only exists BECAUSE of Firestar and Since several cats who knew him ARE still alive, they may make Nightheart a little uncomfortable, even if not on purpose. Rootspring may also be able to connect with him about having family conflicts, but other than him, there’s no cat who specifically can connect with any of Nightheart’s problems, which I think he needs. Maybe Hawkwing can have a connection with living up to family legacy or something, but that’s about it. And we KNOW their stories from their POV. RiverClan may have someone who can empathize with his feeling out of place in one of the former Dark Forest trainees or rebels from last arc. But they also seem extremely against the code change and without a leader to judge his “test,” he wouldn’t even be able to join. I would like Mousewhisker to go to RiverClan to be with Minnowtail and end up as either leader or deputy, though. That would be nice. But WindClan had both conflict for Nightheart and at least one cat who give him the things he needs. Breezepelt. Breezepelt knows what it’s like to grow up without a father in a Clan that’s against you from the start for actions another cat took before he was even born. And he knows what kind of dark path that could lead a cat down. It would also be a better redemption than what we got in Crowfeather’s trial. Imagine it: Breezepelt sees the way Nightheart is treated, it reminds him of his own past, of what led him to train in and join the dark forest. He sees this young cat who looks almost exactly like him (just fluffier because in my mind, Nightheart is a medium to long haired cat lol) go through almost the exact same difficulties he went through. Fatherhood and losing one of his daughters has mellowed him out. He’s grieving Smokehaze still, maybe he’s in constant conflict with Harestar and Heathertail (who blames him for letting their daughter join the rebels). He sees this fatherless cat and decides to be a friend. So, at a gathering before Nightheart gets his warrior name, he says hello and speaks to him a little. When they see each other on patrols, he’s kind but not lenient about the border. They spend time together at gatherings and Breezepelt introduces him to his daughters, 1 of which Nightheart connects with (I personally like Appleshine, she seems cute). Breezepelt becomes a cat Nightheart feels he can go to. Nightheart feels comfortable with him. When the pressure of his Clan’s drama gets to be too much, Breezepelt tries to run away from the Clans all together, only to be found by Breezepelt. Breezepelt convinces him to join WindClan. He does, but is immediately met with opposition from Harestar and most of the other warriors. Harestar gives him a challenge that is possible but extremely difficult, catch a rabbit on his own. Breezepelt argues that it’s hard for warriors from other Clans to do that, nearly impossible, and that Nightheart doesn’t know anything about how to survive on the moor, which IS much more dangerous with its lack of cover. Harestar gives Breezepelt the rest of the day and the next two days to teach Nightheart everything he needs to know, telling Crowfeather to excuse Breezepelt from patrols. Breezepelt spends that time bonding with Nightheart more, coming to genuinely see Nightheart as a son rather than a fatherless kid he pitied. His daughters help when they don’t have patrols or other duties and the 2 Nightheart doesn’t romantically like form a sisterly bond with him while he and the 3rd form genuine feeling for each other. Heathertail notices this and accuses them of trying to replace Smokehaze, leading to a discussion about how she died in the battle against ShadowClan and the rebels and how Heathertail blamed Breezepelt for her death while Breezepelt blamed Harestar for blindly following the imposter, which put a strain on their relationship. The day of his test, Nightheart is given an area that tends to have lots of rabbits to hunt and no other cat is allowed to go there until the test is over at sunset. Nightheart spends all day remembering what Breezepelt taught him and chasing rabbits, but fails each time. Then he sees a gray she-cat with eyes that remind him on Heathertail’s. She offers to help, but he says he can’t accept. She says that her help WILL be acceptable in his test. He still refuses and goes to find another rabbit, but it’s getting late. The sun is about to set and his time is almost up. When he thinks all is lost, he finds a “rabbit,” big with long legs and ears. He stalks it, but it bolts. It’s about to go into its den when the gray she-cat appears from inside. Startled, it turns and runs straight into Nightheart’s paws. When he goes to tell the she-cat off, she’s gone. He decides to take the “rabbit” back and accept his fate. All the way back, he’s dreading telling everyone he’s failed, remembering the assessments he failed and feeling sick to his stomach. When he arrives and tells the story, Harestar is furious he broke the rules until one of the medicine cats thinks to ask him to describe the she-cat, thinking she was an intruder that needed to be chased off. When he tells everyone what she looked like, a gray she-cat with blue eyes similar to Heathertail’s, everyone is quiet. Kestrel flight nods and tells Harestar “it would seem our ancestors have spoken, and what a sign for them to send.” Nightheart’s is confused until Whisperpaw explains that he didn’t catch a rabbit, he caught a HARE, which even seasoned warriors cannot do without help. And Breezepelt tells him that the cat who helped him was his deceased daughter, Smokehaze, a STARCLAN warrior. With a sign so obvious, Harestar has no option but to accept Nightheartbinto WindClan. Breezepelt and Nightheart go for a walk together where Breezepelt tells Nightheart about his past. He explains that he saw himself in Nightheart and couldn’t let another cat make the same mistakes he did. That he had long since learned his lesson, but wanted losing his daughter made him realize the extent of what he had done. The cats he wanted to kills were someone’s kits and losing his own made him realize that he could have caused the pain he felt to someone else. It made him frustrated and angry with himself, so he swore to help any cats he every saw that reminded him of that time in his life. Nightheart did and Breezepelt came to see Nightheart as a son. He explains that he doesn’t want to use Nightheart to replace Smokehaze, but he does want to be a father figure to him. Nightheart accepts this and soon comes to accept 2 of Breezepelt’s daughter as sisters. The 3rd, he builds a romantic and stable relationship with, both of them getting teased lightheartedly by “their sisters” about it and how funny it was. Breezepelt and Heathertail eventually break up, but continue to have a good relationship with their daughters. Eventually, after seeing how much her daughter genuinely loves Nightheart and maybe even Nightheart saving his mate from a dog or in battle, Heathertail comes to accept him as her daughter’s mate, but not a son. And his family in ThunderClan aren’t happy when they find out about him joining WindClan. Sparkpelt, Finchlight, and Squirrelflight are confrontational every time they meet. The only cats who support him are Bayshine, Cloudtail, and the medicine cats, tho Jayfeather keeps asking why he “chose Breezepelt of all the fur balls in the world.” Most of the rest of ThunderClan are hostile towards him until Nightheart has enough and blows up on them at a gathering, publicly disowning his family and being dismissed early along with Breezepelt and his mate. In every confrontation, he either fights the ThunderClan cats off alone or with the help of Breezepelt and whatever daughter(s) are with them. But over time, as he proves himself to his new Clanmates, more cats come to be close to himself and also defend him. I feel like that story would better for Nightheart in that he gets a found family, respect from his Clan (which he chose), AND a love interest that doesn’t feel forced. And Sunbeam can have her own story separate from him. I don’t like that the only reason Nightheart and Sunbeam’s stories are crossing are for them to form a romance. Inter-Clan FRIENDSHIPS are now also legal so why can’t a tom and a she-cat be just friends? They can still support each other without needing to get romantic. I feel like this is going to stunt BOTH of their growths as characters. Female characters tend to be reduced to JUST another female character as soon as romance is mixed into their stories.

@@sindraile5128 yeah, seriously the age gap bs is getting out of control now. My rule of thumb when writing fanfics is that if one member of the ship is no longer considered a “young” or “new” warrior when the other one is born, they’re too old. I do have SOME ships with big age gaps, but the older one is ALWAYS conflicted and the younger one is ALWAYS the one to make the first move, and they usually come from different Clans so that they older one hasn’t been watching the younger one grow up from a kit. The couple I’m thinking of off the top of my head is one of my (many) gay couples, Dapplewing (older one) who is originally from ShadowClan and Creekwhisker (younger one) who is original from WindClan. It took a whole super edition and almost half an arc for them to get together because Dapplewing felt it was wrong to be with a cat so much younger than him, but Creekwhisker was insistent and Dapplewing eventually agrees to at least give a relationship a try. But as for my post. Part of what I like about the scenario of Nightheart joining WindClan is the natural conflicts and drama that can come of it. WindClan is historically done with ThunderClan’s bs, so he would REALLY have to prove himself. On top of that, connecting with Breezepelt and his daughters comes with its own drama. Smokehaze. She was Breezepelt’s daughter and died in the battle with ShadowClan and the rebels last arc (my heart broke for Breezy-boi when I read her name among the list of cats who died). The death of a child can strain a couple’s relationship and that battle should never have happened but did because Mistystar and Harestar were being mouse brains. So I could see Breezepelt and Heathertail already having a rocky relationship due to Smakehaze’s death because Heathertail blame Breezepelt for “allowing” her to join the rebels, while at the same time Breezepelt not only blames himself but also Harestar for her death and makes his anger with his leader well known. If he and his daughters adopt an outsider as their own, I can see the Clan (ESPECIALLY Heathertail) accusing them of trying to “replace” Smokehaze and issues arising with that. Meanwhile, Nightheart being insecure about his place in WindClan and thinking he IS just a replacement that’s causing issues, has to be reassured and almost annoying amount of time that that’s not the case, that Breezepelt and his daughters would have taken him in regardless of whether Smokehaze was dead or alive. I also feel like, since we barely see Nightheart in TBC, the Erin’s can say he and Smokehaze were decent friends that talked at gatherings and said hello at the border. They can have made it out to be that Nightheart admired Smokehaze as a kind but fierce warrior who know right from wrong and part of his problems could have that he’s grieving her loss and feels conflicted because she was from another Clan. Maybe they could have made Smokehaze be the unbiased cat he talked to at gatherings about his issues in ThunderClan and without her, he’s lost and confused. The he joins WindClan and is taken in by Breezepelt and his daughters and through helping them grieve, he comes to terms with his own sense of loss for Smokehaze. There is so much more the Erin’s could have done just by giving Nightheart a reason to join WindClan and be adopted into Breezepelt’s family. And very little would have had to be shoehorned into the plot. If it had hands, it would have written itself! Plus, I like the idea of BREEZEPELT’S daughter “marrying” a THUNDERCLAN cat, one related to Lionblaze and Jayfeather (but not Breezepelt) at that.

I feel like nightheart’s conflict in this book was actually pretty realistic. (for nightheart being a teen and young adult sort of age.) Feeling like everyone is against you and you can’t do anything right is something that I understand as a teen and while I feel like it definitely makes me see him as maybe a younger cat, (because it seems a bit immature) the problem is still actually pretty realistic. All he wanted was to be himself, but he feels like no cat will except him if he is, so he fantasizes about leaving those cats behind for people who will treat him better. He doesn’t actually act on it until the end of the book though, which I think he will end up realizing is a mistake, but I understand that total feeling of frustration and longing to be respected. Sort of like a real life teen feeling such frustrations with their parents, and thinking about running away. I also anticipate what will be sort of a walk of shame, like after fighting with somebody and having to go back into the room and face them again, but walking back into his old clan and having the shame and hurt coming back. if the past is any indication, it seems like his clanmates don’t let go of things very easily. I’m sure it’s also not helping this feeling that his sister, who was originally on his side, had completely switched sides to disliking him and being angry. If this isn’t merely a writing mistake, and she really did support him at first, and then just became cold almost 2 moons later then I can understand why he would feel unwanted if her and sparkpelt won’t even let him speak to them. Edit: this does not mean that I want him and sunbeam to get together, because I absolutely do not. Their romance seems sort of… weird. like they always referred to each other as ‘friends’ and ‘good friends’ and how it was ‘nice to have a friend’ and then all of a sudden nightheart realized he wanted to leave his clan, and the only friend he had outside it was in shadowclan so he tried to convince himself that they would be good mates. I was honestly really holding out hope that she would reject him for Lightleap, but that possibility has pretty much gone to zero. I just really hope that they realize that they only need to be friends because their dynamic isn’t really romantic chemistry, it’s more like besties.

I mean it was obvious since the moment Blazefire and Sunbeam broke up that NightxSun would be a thing. I don't support it or like it but I highly doubt they'll break up. I'd like that and them to be friends but based on warriors writers it is very doubtful. I see some people want Night to go back to Thunderclan but I think it would be the worst thing. First, we need less incest. Second, that clan is toxic to him and no amount of him speaking up for himself was going to change it. Like it or not his family is horrible to him and he can't just talk to them based on how they treat him in this book. I'm glad he left and I hope he gets into a clan. He might fail that clan assesment trial and be forced to join a different clan which would also be intresting. I really don't want him to go back to Thunder. Yes not all his problems will be resolved and he'll have to prove himself but he shouldn't have to force himself to be content with a toxic family and leader/deputy. Also can Squirrel and Bramble die I'm so sick of them it's insane they are still so prominent in this series. I don't hate either like some do but their drama and leadership has become such a bore

IFKR!!! The only forbidden romance I actually liked was Moth Flight and Micah. Everything after that I either couldn’t care less about (Crowleaf), thought it was decent but still had flaws (Bristleroot), or thought it was absolute garbage (Dovetiger). Honestly I’m so glad they didn’t make Heatherlion canon in the books. I cringed every time they had a chapter together and it just seemed so weirdly forced. Plus I kinda like how Breezepelt had a soft spot for someone. I wasn’t expecting him to get a mate and that just made it better. Plus you can see he actually cares for his family: he’s proud when his daughters are made apprentices/Warriors. It’s better that they gave another character more depth instead of making a whole nother forbidden romance thing with Lionblaze.

To me it felt very rushed, but it also felt like the narrative was somehow aware of that. I don't know if the Erins are just getting even worse at writing romance, or if this is supposed to be a couple of stupid kids making stupid choices on stupid whims, and it will come back to bite them in a huge way. I got a very 'Bluefur and Oakheart' vibe from it; this meaning something that was supposed to be this sweeping, epic romance but ended up feeling like a meaningless, lusty fling that would have been completely over if not for the kits that resulted from it.

So i read this book... And I hated this romance. It was boring, forced, and unsupported, but my biggest issue is the fact that the book made a point to tell us that the journey they went on was 2 days. They knew each other for two days and decided they loved each other. Like, these cats don't know each other at all! Also, Nightheart not only thought about how great theyd be great mates while he was spying on her and using her, he totally used her as an excuse to get away from his own hard situation. And also the fact that frostpaw has a crush now just makes 3/3 protagonists revolve around romance and the next books are going to be torture

The way I see it, it could be redeemed if this is brought into question in the narrative. Sunbeam is on the rebound from being very interested in Blazefire and then being shot down. Nightheart is literally running away from his problems and is justifying it as "Sunbeam likes me, so im going to go be mates with Sunbeam, and everything will be better" even though that doesn't fix his problems. Night also did NOT talk to Sunbeam about being mates OR going to ShadowClan; he just assumed it would be that way. Frostpaw is reaching for something to distract her because she's so overwhelmed with the responsibilities that have been heaped on her and doesn't know to handle it. If the book brings this stuff up and has Sun and Night realize their relationship does not work, I will really like the plotline.

I could really see this being a good plot point but only if the Erins are smart about it. I could see it being revealed over time that sunbeam and nightheart aren’t really in love but as young and inexperienced cats with troubled families they are just using each other unhealthily to try and cope with their troubles in life. Sunbeam is a young warrior coming off of a bad break up, and she’s facing conflict with her mother revolving around one of her brothers. I could see this sudden lack of stable relationships in her life pushing her to seek out a new connection with a cat who is in a similarly rough situation. That cat is in this case, nightheart. I think it even makes a bit of sense for her to specifically look for a scandalous relationship like a cross clan relationship in order to spite her xenophobic mother and even perhaps show her brother spireclaw that he’s not alone in the battle for cross clan love. I think this sudden decision also makes sense for nightheart’s character. We see that he also has difficult relationships with almost all of his family and he doesn’t seem to have any close friendships in thunderclan. I think it’s reasonable that this isolation would cause him to seek out a relationship of some kind with a cat outside thunderclan. Nightheart is also shown to be rather flashy and also almost thoughtless in his decisions sometimes. During one of his first two warrior assessments he raced a hawk for prey, a bold but foolish choice since the hawk could have very well killed him. Nightheart, as shown by his strong dislike for his legacy that appears to seep into all parts of his life, also has little regard for tradition. I think his tendency for flashy and not well thought out displays, his disregard for tradition, and his youth actually makes switching clans to escape his problems pretty realistic. Now if the Erins can just not make this switch about love, and use it as a device to further to explore our protagonists’ personal problems as well as their lack of coping skills, I think this plot point could actually be super good and bring a lot of satisfying character development and engaging conflict into this new arc.

And even if it happens, why are they always from different clans? We've been with that topic since the first arc and it's so repetitive it can get boring. Anyone who actually likes this ship makes me feel grossed out Speaking from personal experience, a guy who love bombs you, always compliments you, and stalks you (you may or may not know it), it's genuinely uncomfortable. Can Nightheart and Sunbeam just.. be friends? With no romance involved, just a great solid friendship story. It would be refreshing for Warriors to go that kind of direction for a change, because i'm so tired of these halfhearted repetetive romance subplots

Though I am onboard the Nightbeam/Sunheart ship, I'm beginning to headcanon Nightheart/Bayshine and Sunbeam/Lightleap and if they decide to have kits they can be a joined surrogate family 🥰

I really really wish Nightheart had more conflict with Sparkpelt and Finchflight, I would also like to see their reactions to Nightheart leaving. I honestly wish he talked it out a couple times and it went badly but he keeps going while being slightly stubborn, until his family bonds with him. I would love to see Sparkpelt and Nightheart bond, that’s why he wants to be with Sunbeam because she gave him support when his mother never did, so it’s a relief for him. Though he does try to get more support from Sunbeam, which isn’t good.

right now, i dont hate it or love it, if they have good chemistry ill like it, but why do the erins have to have two main characters from different clans falling for each other, and then a third protagonist just in the back, who also happenes to be a medicine cat (rootstring, bristlefrost, and shadowsight, anyone?). (also this has nothing to do with my comment but sparkpelts face in the video had me cracking up what is hat expression tho)
