For some reason I follow the construction of a railway line in Florida, despite living in Germany and having the Stuttgart 21 project close by.

For our European friends, we in the states do not consider a drive from Orlando to Miami to be particularly long. That's about 250 miles, or 400 KM. Farther than from Brussels to Paris. I only mention this because Europeans (I lived and worked in Europe for a decade) tend to underestimate distances in the States. These distances is one reason why passenger rail in the States has never made money, even during the golden age of rail (railways made money on freight, which made up for the loss of revenue moving passengers). I hope Brightline can change this paradigm. BTW I drive 528 and 520 about twice a month, and it's been fun to watch the work.

I work for the company installing the retaining walls for the main stretch from 520 to where 407 splits off of 528. It’s really cool seeing the interest in our work!

@@RoamingRailfan Thanks! We are one of 3 major companies in Florida specialized in that type of work. Brightline is one of our more unique projects we have been apart of.

Where you noted that the eastern and western portions of construction meet (7:10), would that be where a ceremony will take place to officially open the new project, or would that happen in a more populated area?

I have no idea

@@RoamingRailfan Just wondering! I'm sure they'll have a 'Golden Spike'-type ceremony somewhere. I'm looking forward to your coverage of the event.

Great video, one point of clarification though. What you are calling "Headers" are actually "Abutments", the first couple of times I heard you say it, I wasn't sure what you were talking about. Bridges are supported by abutments at the ends and piers in between. Keep up the good work, I'll have to look up some of your other videos.
@RoamingRailfan3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The information I have been told and read call the concrete that is poured around the top of the pilings that the bridge beams sit on the headers, which is why I have used that term.
@robpetersen65843 жыл бұрын
@@RoamingRailfan Interesting I've been a frustrated bridge engineer for about 40 years and never heard the term before. Before I commented, I even did a Google search for the term just to be sure I wasn't missing something and came up empty. Perhaps it's a term the contractor uses. Whatever, I've been checking out some your other videos and you do a great job. I'll have to start following you.
@RoamingRailfan3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your insight, it must be an internal term then.

Any noteworthy speed restrictions on the new route? Some of those curves look pretty sharp for a mainline.
@RoamingRailfan3 жыл бұрын
Other than the curves onto the east/west alignment in Cocoa and at the airport it should be full speed in between.
