I struggle to see why the length of sentence in comparison to racially motivated common assault would be surprising. From my understanding, common assault doesn't even refer to an act of physical violence - that would be battery. I'm pretty sure it's something like threatening behaviour which causes the victim apprehension of physical violence, so I struggle to see why that would be worse than stabbing and killing a cat, let alone however many it was he stabbed and killed. Just seems like she's pushing her politics which don't necessarily match up with a rational assignment of severity to the crimes she references. My intuition would be that stabbing and killing even one cat is worse (potentially far worse) than most cases of threatening behaviour towards an individual on the basis of their race. But maybe I’m wrong

The newsreaders' comment at the beginning of the item was both deplorable, and ridiculous. I wouldn't call 5 years for murdering 9 cats, and attempting to murder 7 others too severe by any stretch of the imagination. If anything, it's far too leniant. The man is clearly a psychopath, and all psychopaths should forever be removed from the general population for it's own good. The police apparently charged him with criminal damage, only because it carries a far higher sentence than that for animal cruelty. The former carries a 10 year maximum sentence, compared to only 6 months for animal cruelity. So I applaud the police for trying to get him a more severe sentence.
