(1947) I wouldn't bother if you have not seen the film, or read the book.

"She walked rapidly in the thin June sunlight, towards the worst horror of all" One of the bleakest lines ever written in English literature

It's so deliciously bleak though isn't it. I can't quite say why, but there's such a grim satisfaction in it.

“She walked rapidly in the thin June sunlight, towards the worst horror of all” What makes that line so sad is that she will realise he didn’t love her
@maculka9994 жыл бұрын
The book's ending is so much more powerful. That last line stays with you and makes you feel the entire Rose's personal tragedy that follows yet remains untold.

"She walked rapidly in the thin June sunlight, towards the worst horror of all" Haven't read the book or watched the whole film, but it's so influential I can't stay away from it. I take it thats the final line? Does that mean the book heavily implies that the recording says the whole thing and doesn't get stuck on repeat?

Yes, Pinkie is a complete psychopath; no concern whatsoever about hurting anyone physically or emotionally, even when that person is looking at him with trust and adoration.
@DavidJJames3 жыл бұрын
That's actually tied up better than the book. Very good cinematography. Greene must have been chuffed.

Classic case of a sociopath! No remorse. No real emotions, they merely mirror an emotion when necessary.

A sociopath maybe, but not a psychopath. Pinkie has a major case of the feels about just about everything. That's part of the reason he's so messed up.

I think it is actually left a little vague whether the record is really skipping or not. Rose clearly hears what she wants to, what she needs to, and in that moment the sister's face doesn't really give much away. The camera zooms in on the cross because Rose takes it on faith that Pinkie loved her. Faith, pretty much by definition, does not require proofs. It even perseveres in the face of seeming disproof. Perhaps in the end the record is not all that important. They understood each other spiritually from the start and there is a sort of love there of the sort characters like Ida Arnold don't even know exists. However, a thousand questions are thrown up in the air about Rose's future, what will happen to her mind, to her soul.

@Miw0 I did a seminary paper on this book and in my opinion some of the sources of his behaviour are his utmost love of Kite who was like a father to him (which resulted in his further avenge), the frustruation of being a gang leader and a kid at the same time (meaning his inexperience), and his sexual inhibitions. But still, it is the beauty of this novel that the exact source of his overwhelming hatred is not entirely known to the reader. Hope I helped you.

I believe Pinkie and Kite were gay lovers.

That's actually a plot hole Graham Greene saw. He wrote it that way in the movie because he felt that a sadder ending would have been rejected by the U.K. He himself said that anyone with common sense would realize that the next time she would just push the needle past the scratch and listen to the full message.
@teejaymz7423 жыл бұрын
I thought the same, but the movie’s ending is effective as well in that it leaves it open. Does she remain satisfied with what she hears and leaves it at that or does she pick up the needle and listen to the rest of the message? We don’t know. It’s indicative of man’s insanity that he persists in self-induced delusions rather than facing the truth.
@LPCLASSICAL2 жыл бұрын
@@teejaymz742 yes - she might just put the record away - since when a woman hears a man say I love you - she may feel she doesnt need to hear any more.
@daddykornflakes2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in fact common sense tells me they would keep listening until it became evident that the needle was stuck and the words were repeating. So the nun would attend to it there and then, and she would become aware of his true feelings.
@Londonfogey8 ай бұрын
It's possible of course the record was somehow damaged (say with a wide scrape rather than a single scratch) which would make it impossible to move the needle forward. I found an old collection of 78s at my grandmother's and one or two of them were like that. @@daddykornflakes

Did she not get suspicious at his choice of words - "You WANT me to say I love you..."? It would have been obvious the record had stuck, surely she would have wanted to hear it all? A great ending, the wording on the record could have been a bit cleverer though.
@LerafoLuap3 жыл бұрын
Maybe she DOES get suspicious and can’t bring herself to listen to the rest of the recording for fear that it will confirm her suspicions? I like the way the ending leaves it open and ambiguous.

Well, I'm no expert mate, have you read the book? The impression I got was due to his age, and trying to prove himself as a hard leader. The only reason he was with the lass, was to keep her quiet, about who she had seen in the cafe.

I don't think he's capable of love, just an evil, nasty piece of work. Gay or not, he absolutely hates sex and is incapable of forming normal human relationships. Really sad how he is such a bastard when she clearly loved him to bits.

Just finished the book, that closing line "She walked rapidly in the thin June sunshine towards the worst horror of all" his blatant use of the words "the worst horror of all" without any flourished language was perfect, I could hear the low voice saying "G-damn, you little bitch, why can't you go back home forever and let me be?"
@Dermot292712 жыл бұрын
I understood "Pinky" was because of a pinky ring, though "Pinky Brown" does suggest a certain something...and he didn't so much hate religion, rather he had had a very oppressive Catholic childhood and was twisted and full of neuroses because of it.

I confess that when I'm feeling my most mysoginistic, and at times every human feels mysoginistic...this scene springs to mind. I guess it is hubris. But you can't help yourself but revel in the power Pinky has over that silly girl. I'm happy to accept the numerous versions of this old tale that involve female control of a worshipping male, btw.
