So let's just back up the truck a bit. We grew lots of watermelons in Africa. Often they were cracked inside. Those were often the sweetest. Did we inject them with chemicals or use pesticides? No! The cracks are due to how much and when they got water. Drought years often produced hollow heart watermelons (i.e. cracked inside) and sweeter fruit because the sugars were concentrated in less flesh. Here in Canada we've bought organic melons that were cracked inside. If you support your community and buy from local farmers that have bee hives on their land, you won't be buying one that's been sprayed with pesticides or injected with chemicals.
@Aerogrow6 жыл бұрын
Agreed; grown some in yard in past; had same cracks on some. Same thing; all natural; no real pesticides and natural fertilizer. Think the take way from story is don't buy watermelons from china or other countries that don't really buy into food safety all that much.

You're absolutely right Orlando. I've been eating watermelon my whole life, even the "cracked" ones for 60 years, as well as grapes and kiwi, still healthy as ever! Sometimes a watermelon is pale and lacks flavor because it was picked early and allowed to ripen during warehousing, or transit time from other countries. If they didn't do this much of the fruit would spoil before it made it to market.

This is baloney! We have been growing organic heirloom watermelons on our farm for 25+ years, certain types get big cracks inside naturally and the white seeds are simply either non heirloom meaning they aren't seeds you can plant or they are just unripe seeds. Mishaped melons have many causes like growing along another one, against a rock etc. Maybe some places use that chemical on theirs, but I know for a fact it would be hard to find at an American farmers market. At least here in the southwest. We take pride that our farm grown produce tastes wonderful and is much better for you than store bought.

@rebeccamd79036 жыл бұрын
Kramerica Inc ganglion cysts can be dangerous neurologically speaking but sometimes they are benign. It depends on each person, where it’s placed, & how it is specifically affecting you. Unless you’re symptomatic, doctors prefer waiting or doing nothing because surgery always have potential bad outcomes, especially when it comes to nerves & fine hand motor skills. That’s what I know from working in the medical field & a friend who actually had the surgery & was left with neuropathy. Thanks for sharing what you know about watermelons!!
@Jockeylotforfun6 жыл бұрын
Kramerica Inc, His info is faulty, lacks or even conflicts with medical and scientific knowledge. Examples, Diabetic patients must use great caution when eating watermelon. Even in small amounts it can drive their blood sugar levels sky high. Blood sugar has to be monitored to make adjustments so that we can enjoy healthy delicious watermelon in moderation. Patients with kidney disease are often placed on LOW potassium diets as their bodies loose ability to maintain healthy levels. Primarily Proteins are found in meats, fish, dairy products, Soy and many types of beans.....there might be gold in watermelon too, but not enough to go mining, haha. best regards everyone.

circe delune .... I thought the deeper the sound after tapping means it is better
@circedelune6 жыл бұрын
garrimic3 thumping the watermelon should produce a hollow sound if it is ripe. I confess that this method takes a lot of experience before you can accurately determine ripeness by the sound. I gave up trying long ago. The best method I have found is by how the watermelon looks and by how the vines look. In the market you only have the melon. It should be firm. A fingernail scraped against a small area should reveal a whitish layer (This won't hurt the melon, ruin it's value, or make it unfit for sale). There should be a pale area where the melon lay on the ground. This area should be yellowish, not white.
@WatermelonBoard6 жыл бұрын
We don't promote the "thumping" method either, since as you agree it is hard to master. We say to look for the buttery yellow ground spot, where the watermelon sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. - National Watermelon Promotion Board

Not quite accurate. The shape of the fruit is mostly determined by the variety. Sugar melons tend to be round as do seedless melons. The best watermelons I have tasted were quite large (around 6 to 8kg) and long. These are less and less common as the little round ones seem to be taking over.

Very true - there are 2 types of melons among the ones I've grown that are really odd - both South American varieties I believe. One variety I know my mom got from neighbors who brought them from Mexico, which while it looks "standard" from the outside, instead of red, has a sweet, bright yellow flesh inside. Another one is strange because of the size and shape. Somewhere between a softball and volleyball. Perfect spheres. Really sweet. My mom also tried one strange variety once that I can't recall the source of - but they were TINY! We're talking 3-4" long melons. Very sweet. Almost had a "cucumber" taste to them IIRC, but having been quite a few years, this MIGHT be just my brain mis-remembering things. I do think I recall that, however - being surprised at the taste as a child and thinking (foolishly) that maybe these were some sort of scientific hybrid between the 2. Stuck in my mind that way, but as I said, the only part I'm sure of in that memory was watermelons smaller than our other veggies like eggplants and zucchini.

If they are being grown naturally free of those chemicals then it's nature that not everything is perfect. I'm in the UK and recently watched a tv show about British people who grow giant vegetables for competitions and best in show etc.. (we have lots of country shows over here). They explained that too much rain at the wrong time can make their vegetables like marrow (which has a high water content) split open. Provided it has been grown naturally it won't harm anyone. It's the industrial growers who stick chemicals in everything that make things dangerous to eat.

I owned a farm and grew my own watermelons and no chemical enhancements or pesticides were used (because I had bees). There is nothing wrong with a watermelon that is oddly shaped and or has cracks inside it. Nothing always grows the exact way you see it at the store. Most of the time the ones you by at the store have been picked through and any that don't look "perfect" are most likely thrown away or used for other products where you cant see the original shape that they grew as (like popsicles and jams). :)

Two items: 1) Not all internatlly cracked watermelons are toxic or are the cracks always only caused by plant growth hormone you mentioned - too much water at wrong time can also cause this; 2) the dull thump when tapped usually means the melon is OVER ripe, not under ripe. When the melon is over ripe the flesh is soft and mushy from the water exiting the decaying cells, making the melon absord the tapping sound . . . good video, otherwise.

Alll SEEDLESS watermelons have white seeds, Normal seeded watermellons usually have black seeds. But I only buy seedless because i dont want the seeds. And no, it doesnt mean they are genetically modified despite what other idiots say. They have been selectively grown to minimize seed production. And besides, there is nothing wrong with GMO , only tin foil hat idiots believe that horseshit. There is not a single food, organic or otherwise that has not been modified through some means. The idea that speeding up a process that can be done naturally over a longer period of time is some how more dangerous or effects the food is absurd and ridiculous. And clearly from idiots who dont know how science works. Neil DeGrass Tyson had it right when he schooled idiots over GMOs.

Suzette, this is a hoax. The "cracks" in the watermelon are completely normal. How I know this is because my uncle works for the department of agriculture, and I've asked him, and he said its when the watermelon gets extremely sweet and the natural sugars causes cracks. Its completely fine to eat. I've eaten a watermelon with cracks in it, and I did not have digestive issues.

You are right for how to pick them, but not for the cracks inside, my country is too poor to bother buy chemicals for the watermelons so in this case our watermelons are one of the few things that are still natural (well not original watermelon natural but you got the point). Usually the ones with cracks inside are really sweet. You are also right about the benefits. My father went whole summer only on watermelons and not only droped his wheight but also his diabeties went down the drain. Also one more tip for picking the right watermelon trust me that works 95% of the time. If the watermelon have bite marks from rabbits or just some indication that the watermelon was bitten by something and healed later that is a sure sign that it have a great taste inside. Consider it approved by the animals good. :)
