* Common Misconception: More lifeboats would NOT have helped. * The Titanic had 20 lifeboats: only 18 were launched. After the filming of his movie about the titanic, James Cameron wanted to recreate the launching of lifeboats to understand how long the process took, so he set up a test with one of the prop lifeboats they had on set. What they found: the lifeboat took about 30min to launch, done by TRAINED crew and in ideal circumstances. The crew of the Titanic was not well trained, and the steam venting out made the deck EXTREMELY noisy, so people on deck could barely hear or communicate with each other. It is a miracle that they were even able to deploy as many lifeboats as they did in the time that they had and with the lack of training. The bottleneck was NOT the lifeboat shortage: the bottleneck was the shortage of time.

This is not clickbait. It explained what happened to the extent that anyone is capable of knowing. They either floated away, sank with the ship, or were pulled from the water by people in other ships. Did you expect a map to a pile of skeletons in Bora Bora or what? Kids on Titanic sites sometimes have so little sense of what is actually possible to know or to do in the real world-it is scary.

God no one ever said that... That is literally a quote from Cal from the 1997 movie... A person who didn't even exist in real life. And even so that company only said it was "practically unsinkable" not completely unsinkable... Had the Titanic encountered a more normal accident she would have survived it. The damage the Titanic recieved was not something her builders expected... She was designed to survive collisions with other ships and less catastrophic accidents... The iceberg opened 5 compartments which titanic could stay afloat with only 4 compartments breached. Titanic's sister ship the Olympic had an accident with another ship and it survived that collision. She even got torpedoed in WW1 and also survived that.

Because at the time Titanic was in compliance with the British Board Of Trade. The number of lifeboats was based on the total tonnage of the ship, not on the number of passengers aboard Titanic. The lifeboats was not intended to evacuate everyone. The idea behind it was that in a distress call the wireless officers would send in a nearby ship to evacuate the remaining people on the ship, while only a handful left on lifeboats. It was only after Titanic sank that they implement the number of lifeboats based on the amount of passangers.
@felixculpa93033 жыл бұрын
Notable fact ! They didn’t even have time to launch the last 2 lifeboats on the ship before it sank... Even if there was 60 lifeboats on Titanic.. 42 of them would have gone down with the ship! There is however no excuse for them not filling the 18 boats they did have time to launch to capacity.

If they were going to have lifeboats, then they should've had enough lifeboats for everyone. The fact that they had only 20 lifeboats was an insult to those who couldn't get on and who died as a result.
@adamclark89945 жыл бұрын
Not enough life boats because it made the storage room look cramped and blocked the view of the ocean and for whatever reason not all the life boats were filled with as many people as they could have been. Yet the ice berg just gets the blame for what happened?. Also, Molly Brown was one good, remarkable and selfless person. Reminds me of my mother.
@meganchomyn96675 жыл бұрын
Another reason for the Titanic not having enough life boats was because their main purpose was to ferry passengers from the sinking ship to the rescue ship, not to remain in the water for hours on end. The architecture of the ship was actually so well built that the Titanic lasted at least an hour longer than the designers had originally thought possible.

Ok, this was actually very well researched. Bravo! One major discrepancy is why the Titanic was traveling so fast through the iceberg field. Combined with Ismay’s instruction to Captain Smith; in 1912, it was customary for crews to push through an ice field as fast as possible. “Get through quick; get through safe” was the custom.

I’ve always understood the shortage of lifeboats on the Olympic class liners wasn’t an oversight or the result of making the deck cluttered but rather a deliberate choice borne out of arrogance. These ships were after all considered to be unsinkable, so the boats on board were never even meant to hold all souls on board at once. Instead their main role was to accommodate ferrying passengers to other ships should she lose power/engines etc. Sinking wasn’t even considered as a possibility and as such the need for a ship wide evacuation wasn’t planned for. It puts the situation into perspective for me because it’s hard to imagine Ismay being that callous as to doom over 2/3 of the people on board, especially considering he was on her maiden voyage. It’s not that he was evil, he was just so criminally ignorant he honestly believed Titanic couldn’t sink.
@mike-mz6yz2 жыл бұрын
nobody ever believes a ship is unsinkable. That really grew in popularity after the sinking. Some newspapers did report that the watertight bulkheads made the ship practically unsinkable but White Star didnt actually think this. The real issue was that it was assumed another ship would always be close enough to respond to an emergency. That the ships design would slow down sinking enough that along with the new radio tech they would be able to get other ships there and transfer passengers over. The other side to this was that if the ship was sinking too fast to get help then more lifeboats would be useless anyways. It took along time to launch lifeboats back then. The Titanic sank slowly and still they didnt have enough time to launch all of them. So while its true they should have more then enough for everyone its also true that ships rarely have an accident where they can both launch all lifeboats and dont have enough time for help to arrive.

There was a book written 14 years before the Titanic sunk called "The Wreck of Titan." The similarities of the two are uncanny! Both the Titanic and the ship in the book had similar names, similar size, similar amount of passengers, and similar amount of crew workers. The two both sank after hitting an ice berg in the North Atlantic, and both did not have enough life boats in the end to save all of the passengers. This next one might be a little much of a stretch but the suffix "ic" in "Titanic" is, and I quote, "Used to form adjectives from nouns with the meaning “of or pertaining to”. Coincidence? The world may never know...

Wrong... There was only a fire in one coal bunker. The Titanic was divided into 16 compartments... The iceberg scraped along 5 possibly even 6 compartments. The fire had nothing to do with the sinking.
@Micko8424 жыл бұрын
The burning coal is said to be the reason the Titanic was travelling at full speed through an ice field. It wasn't unusual for coal fired ships to catch fire in the enclosed space amongst the high temperature, some of the burning coal was shovelled out through the small hatch when Titanic was docked at Southampton whilst the remaining burning coal was shovelled into the burners to prevent a more serious fire. Realistically the ship shouldn't have been allowed to sail at all with burning coal but it's one reason why ships were later powered by Diesel engines as supposed to coal fired burners.
@TheFarmerfitz4 жыл бұрын
There was a coal fire in one of the coal bunkers.. Not the whole ship... It was a common occurance and by no means anything that they were alarmed about... They just simply did like always, shoveled the burning coal into the boiler furnaces first.. It was noted at the inquiry but not thought of as any big deal...

Actually no, if the did that it might have warped the haul as what happened when the mine exploded under Brittanic. Brittanic only had localized damage in one or two compartments but the warped haul jammed the water tight doors open. Ramming the berg probably would have killed most everyone on board bc most lifeboats were launched btw one and two hours after impact, with water tight doors open Brittanic went down in an hour.
