I agree with you on every song. Great assessment & choices. In 1967 -- Lulu's "To Sir, With Love" had a Neil Diamond b-side with "The Boat That I Row" & here Lulu rocked out more. The Association hit "Never My Love" had a flip side that was heavy as hell -- "Requiem For the Masses" & sounded nothing like the pop music that the band was associated with (no pun intended). Janis Ian's hit "Society's Child" had a rocker on the b-side called "Letter To Jon." The Easybeats' "Friday On My Mind" had a heavy rock song on the b-side "Made My Bed Now I Gotta Lie In It." The Monkees' "Daydream Believer" had a jazzy monster of a track on their b-side "Goin' Down," with drummer Fast Eddie Hoh laying down his best Buddy Rich. Lots of great songs were lost to time.

Giles' biggest mistake with 'Walrus' was especially the outro. He compromised the important ascending chord progression with tinkering with the peripheral textual details. Big mistake... I can accept much of his tinkering elsewhere - BUT 'Helter Skelter' was completely ruined in his hands...

Let me make a separate point about 1967 in general, that sheds light on the unprecedented number of outstanding flip sides. Pet Sounds and Sergeant Pepper changed everything -- they set the bar so high that everybody had to up their game to compete. Before that, B-sides and deep album cuts were throwaways. Few people put any care into the choice of material or the quality of the arrangement. Just as PS and SP forced the music world to start taking album cuts seriously, they also led to a more diligent attempt to have worthy flip sides. True, there had always been double sided hits (Elvis for one), but from '67 on music fans avidly brought home a new single that they'd already heard on the radio hoping to discover a little gem on the other side.

Byrds: “Change is now” flip of “Goin’ back” 20. Four Seasons: “Let’s ride again” flip of “C’mon Marianne” 21. Fifth Dimension: “Rosecrans Blvd” flip of “Another day another heartache” 22. Monkees: “The girl I knew somewhere” flip of “A little bit me” 23. Who: “Doctor doctor” flip of “Pictures of Lily” 24. Mamas & Papas: “Straight Shooter” flip of “Twelve Thirty” P.S, Sorry, I hate the version of “Mary Anne with the shaky hands” on the single P.P.S. For 1968, I see six B sides that were far better than the A side. I treated all six flips as the A sides. IMO the first three are great songs. 1. Bee Gees “The singer sang his song” flip of “Jumbo” 2. Beatles: “Inner light” flip of “Lady madonna” 3. Lemon Pipers: “Lonely atmosphere” flip of “Wine and violet” 4. Buckinghams: “You misunderstand me” flip of “Back in love again” 5. Four Seasons: “Good bye girl” flip of “Saturdays father” 6. Who: “Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde” flip of “Call me lightning”

Firstly, Herman's Hermits, both sides were released in the UK as separate singles, No Milk Today not being released as an A sidein the States in 1966, in favor of their horrible version of Dandy, which was only an album track in the UK. Secondly The Who; both sides of that U.S. only singles were on B sides of two other UK singles at the time, Magic Bus and Dogs (not then released in the States) respectively. But the UK version of Dr Jekyll was a different take with added bits of trombone and snippets of laughter, a different recording. Both versions are among the heap of bonus tracks on the box set reissue of The Who Sell Out. You may like the U.S. only version of Shaky Hand on their expanded CD reissue of Odds And Sods in stereo, and without that silly vibrato on the lyrics SHAKY HAND. But U.S. discographies of so many artists vary from their UK discographies, but you seem more familiar with their U.S. releases.

@GeraldM_inNC 4 күн бұрын
@@paulgoldstein2569 - Paul, there is an interesting background to the release history of "No Milk Today". In those days, UK releases usually preceded American release by 2-6 weeks. The radio stations saw that NMT was a huge hit in the UK and assumed it would be their next American release and began playing it. On WMCA (NYC) the response was huge and immediate: it began zooming up WMCA's charts from listener requests alone and getting heavy airplay. Responding to heavy demand, somehow record stores must have also gotten UK copies of it for domestic sale; I myself purchased a copy in my local record store (NOT a record specialist) not even realizing it was an import. All signs were that when it were to be officially released in the U.S. it was heading for top 5 if not number one. But then some moron at the label decided that since it was near Christmas they had to release a Christmas single instead -- "East West", which tanked. When this became the new HH single, the radio stations including WMCA immediately stopped playing NMT. The label had a major hit staring them in the face, but sabotaged it by releasing a seasonal song instead, thereby killing off what would have been a major hit. After the label later inexplicably put this on the "B" side of "Kind of a hush", it still got some airplay and sales on its only, but was not remotely the major hit it that it would have been if they had just released it as an "A" side in November as originally planned. (I hope they fired the suit who made that idiotic decision.)

Particularly good is "The Sun Goes Down", the flip of "Zabadak!" 1967. Also by The Turtles in 1967: Like the Seasons, the B-side to Happy Together. In addition to being a pretty slice of baroque folk-pop, Like the Seasons was one of the first covers of a Warren Zevon song.

I forgot one more jewel-the Bee Gees' flip side to their hit "Holiday"-something called "Every Christian Lionhearted Man Will Show You." What a surprise that was since they followed it later with songs like "Jumbo, " which came out & was terrific melodically but a little childish compared to "Every Christian."

The Rolling Stones with "Ruby Tuesday/Let's Spend the Night Together". Not cretain which was initially released as the "A" side. My imperfect memories recalls the controversy surrounding the title lyrics, highlighted by Ed Sullivan's insistance that "the Night" be replaced by "some time" also caused many a naiscent FM-Rock Radio station's program director to sidestep the controversy by featureing "Ruby Tuesday," which suggests it was originally the "B" side. IMaybe I will look it up and see what I can find out. According to the ever reliable Wiki, Lets Spend the Night Together/Ruby Tueday was released on Jan 27, 1967. The single reached number 3 in the UK, with Ruby Tuesday considered th A Side. In the US, Ruby Tuesday reached No. 1, with "Let's Spend the Night Togethr" as the B Side. At the same time, "Let's Spend the Night Together" also charted as the single's B Side", treaching 55. No matter. Either way the "B" side is still brilliant.

Another great interesting video, although a lot of these great B sides were just further tracks from albums, and are therefore not so obscure.. Firstly The Who; the U.S. only B side of I Can See For Miles, the different take of Shaky Hand was not released in the UK then, but as you said, appeared on the expanded CD version of Odds And Sods years later, but in stereo, and without the vibrato on the lyrics SHAKY HAND. The UK B side was Someone's Coming, which appeared in the States about a year later as the U.S. only B side of Magic Bus, due to their U.S. discography differing from their UK one, like with so many artists. Secondly, The Beatles; Baby You're A Rich Man was also a million times better than it's A side which I am now sick of. But all The Beatles' most recent remixes were done by Giles Martin, who I think is a terrible remixer. He closes the stereo separation in a bit, and seems to add slight but horrible echo, ruining the original clarity of the sound. I don't like his remixes at all. He did the same with the expanded edition of The Rolling Stones' Goat's Head Soup, and with the bonus tracks. How about greatest B sides of 1966.

It was issued in late November 1967, hit number one at the end of the year and charted well into 1968, including most of January at number one. "Walrus” peaked at 56, a gross injustice
