Fantastic layout. Used to trainspot there occasionally, either by train from Parkstone or Central or bus to West Station. Cabbed Evening Star on the last Pines, unfortunately caught an earlier S&D holiday express to Bmth West from Poole, rather than the Pines itself.

What a great layout and store of memories. If you’re old enough this all makes sense, but I worry what happens to model railways, Hornby, and even the preservation scene when those of us who ARE old enough to find all this wonderful, begin to pass the baton…

Then join a Model Railway Club, so you can learn all the skills from the older generation in clubs, before they pass on, and all is lost! You must also understand that much of the research material such as old BR operating documents and most reference books are NOT going to be found on the internet, due to increasingly stringent copyright law, and the financial penalties for posting such material, since everyone now has an IP address !!!!!!!

Well fortunately nostalgia is contagious! I'm 42 years old as I write this in 2023. My late Dad had fond first hand memories of BR steam and the phasing in of diesels throughout the 1950's and 1960's that I've absorbed without even realising it! I have just invested back into model railways partly in his memory, but because I realise I love that era of railways for my own appreciation of steam, mechanical engineering, and railway infrastructure at it's peak.

I lived in Bournemouth, very close to Bournemouth West, for several years, and remember it well. I watched the Bournemouth Belle depart from "The West" many times, hauled by a Merchant Nayy, slipping well. The coaches were parked at west station by an M7 0 4 4 tank loco, and was needed as a banker as the line from the west was a steep gradient up to Branksome to the left and Bournemouth Central to the right. Just a minor observation! An excellent layout. Brings back several memories.

Nice to see so many Brits employing Kadee type knuckle couplers.. Although they do not represent the 1:1 scale coupling in Britain, they must make it so much easier to connect up rakes of cars and such for you folks.. I'm a Yank and have been with the knuckle types (Kadee and now others) since their inception back in what must have been the 1980s or earlier..and which, thank God, replaced our own ugly 'horn hook' jobbies.. Absolutely fabulous in every detail and a tremendous credit to all who worked on construction. Everything has been thought of and I am particularly impressed by the detailed point rodding and the operation of signals. I model the S&D but mine is a pale shadow of this layout. I have all the books and videos of the line but there are no photos which come near to supplying this sort of detail of the station. I used to travel to Bournemouth from Manchester on the Pines up to the age of 12 for our annual holidays. I still have vivid memories of the station and some of the line from Bath. Gorgeous scenery there was not in North Manchester. This brought back happy memories. Thank you for posting.

Superb! My dad used to take me to the 'newer' Bournemouth Central and Salisbury - to keep me quiet, by that time 33s were there, big noisy, dirty, scary and still a favourite 😉😊

The Gateway to Some Awesome memories of First Childhood Holidays with M&D. Long Hot Summers, Golden Sands, Donkey rides, Immaculate Floral Parks and watching the lighting of the candles in the coloured jam jars at Sunset, also ice Creams in Abundance. On recent visits to BM I’ve wondered what happened to the Station, and I am now finding so much interesting info as I delve into LSWR. Awesome Layout - many thanks for making and Sharing this post ✨🙏🏻 👍🏻

When I hear people who remember steam on regular services in the uk, it feels like listening to someone who remembers King Arthur or wooly mammoths. Though I can remember Barry in the early seventies with hundreds of loco hulks lined up, as we headed off to the beach in a DMU

My ex missus used to live in the converted into flats old hotel at Bournemouth West whilst the business end of the branch ended up under the dual carriageway but West carriage sheds and works were always busy and nearly all EPB stock ended up in the West sidings awaiting destruction. The plan was always if possible to put a station near old West's line if they managed to get the old S&D reopened, the Blandford section and the camp branch were not totally lifted until 1984 I seem to remember as the army still used the branch occasionally for MoD trains.

A double line station approach track is still there and runs behind my house. It is still used just to run coaches through the carriage wash often pulled by an old 73 class loco. What a super model layout. I believe the "Railway" pub is wishful thinking but why not! great shame the real station is not still there. Bournemouth central is quite far from the town centre but Bournemouth west was within walking distance of the town centre and the beach. with modern traffic lots of people use the train to visit Bournemouth and it's beaches these days.

Hi Roger I wasn't aware of this layout as I don't buy magazines anymore but just stumbled on it on U Tube. Am really impressed by it, in fact I like it to a modern day Borchester Market in quality and prototypical operation. Apart from checking back to backs of wheelsets did you have to change any to suit the C&L trackwork.Realy like the un- coupling system for the pilot locos, that really would have impressed Frank Dyer. When is it to be exhibited next as I would love to see it.I did pass by it once on the 5/9/65 behind 34019 on a society trip to Weymouth. A really super layout which 1960s train spotters can relate to.

THE TRUE REASON FOR CLOSING BOURNEMOUTH WEST ! The major reason for closing Bournemouth West in late 1965 by BR, was that the ground space was needed for the New 1967 Bournemouth Electrification EMU Depot. As the limited space available at Bournemouth Central was insufficient to accommodate the Depot. The Depot would accommodate the new 4REP "Power Packs" & 4TC "Trailer Car" sets, and allow some capacity for berthing & cleaning the coaching stock of through services from the North of England (via Basingstoke). So whether the S&D closed or not would have made no difference, as most of the long distance traffic that utilised the S&D route was seasonal, and was going to be diverted via Oxford & Basingstoke anyway. As the electrification of that Waterloo - Bournemouth line was going to allow for a major speed up in services using that route. As a result of major track improvements, & modern 3/4 aspect signalling from new Computer signalboxes at Basingstoke & Eastleigh. The S&D was a tortuous mainly single track route !!!

Opening shots, would the road under bridge have had height warning paintwork, particularly the black yellow, at this time.? Do love this model and must get to see it.! As a lad in 1966 I eagerly looked forward to our one week holiday in Bournemouth particularly as we were to stay in Norwich avenue, a very short walk from this station. Imagine the disappointment of this then ten year old, to find it had closed the previous March.! 😢

An excellent depiction of a fascinating (and much-missed) station! Hard to realise that it is '00' (which I don't think the commentary mentions). If you will permit me, I have one minor criticism about the otherwise fine-looking trackwork. Unless my eyes deceive me, the pointwork appears to lack chairs and, together with copperclad timbering, is not a very good match to the C&L chaired bullhead plain track. My choice would have been rivet-and-ply for the pointwork.
