Thank you for this. On Sunday I was riding my Brompton along our local trailway, dropped it into first to tackle a short but vicious slope, got halfway up and the hub gear changed up into third. I just about managed to mash my way up to the top. Headed home with the hub randomly changing gears. When I got home I noticed that the locknut was halfway down the thread. Had a search and found this video, a really useful and clearly explained guide. Followed the instructions and got it all set up as per your video. Took it out for a test ride yesterday and all is well. Thanks again for the great service you provide to the Brompton community with these Videos.

The gear indicator chain can if turned in too much will lock before it is directly in line with the gear cable bracket. After inserting fully turn back half a turn before setting as per your instructions. My cable came loose, I lost the locknut and bought the cheapest on eBay to get a new locknut. When I reassembled to the 1mm mark, my gears were hit and miss and very hard to change, I had calibrated it in 3rd gear. Your movie corrected my error. I also used mole grip and plumbers pliers to make the locknut unable to work loose again. Nail varnish, superglue will do but proper threadlock will be best.

I have never lubricated the inside of my 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear. Should I? How often? The really old hubs had a little oilway down which you could tip 3 in 1 oil if you thought it mattered. I've never had a problem with a hub gear, and my Brompton has been completely trouble free for 6 years - I feel guilty for ignoring it. Thanks for your wonderful KZbin videos.

We think that’s the amazing thing about the Sturmey Hubs. If they are running OK and have not got massively wet (ie submerged) they they are happy left alone. They are packed with grease, so we generally don’t open them unless we need to!

Great video! I took my week-old 6 speed c line into the bike shop to have some minor adjustments and the gearing went to pot afterwards - I wonder if a dodgy mechanic was trying to create work for them?! Anyway, it wouldn't shift to #3 on the hub gears. I followed your video and now it does! One question, is the gear indicator chain supposed to be pretty slack when in 3rd? It feels 'wrong' but seems to work OK

I have one question though, I got my Brompton yesterday and I found that the 3rd gear is much louder and noisier than 2nd and 1st gear, while 2nd and 1st gear sounds similarly quiet, is that normal on a Brompton bike? If not, what would you suggest on the adjustment? Thank you!

Your videos are so helpful and well presented- thank you! Today I was riding and the gear indicator chain came apart from the anchor. Watched this video and got it sorted! Quick question though, to tighten the gear indicator chain to make sure it’s not loose within the hub, can you do this whilst the wheel is fully attached to the bike? Apologies if this is a stupid question!

Thanks for your kind feedback Yes - the indicator chain can be installed with the wheel in the bike - sorry we didn’t make this clearer

Your video is so clear, yet I have some mysterious problem! After fixing a flat on my rear tire and reattaching the chain indicator, I could see (in second gear) what I thought was about 1mm of rod showing out of the axle, and, by touch, I thought that the first and second gears were properly taut, with third gear being looser, so I thought I'd succeeded. Alas, when I test rode, the shifting from first to second involved a kind of little clunking feeling, and third gear did not seem to engage. Or maybe what I thought were first and second were really second and third--but I did not seem to have all three gears available. And the small clunky feeling when shifting was a bit disconcerting. Do these symptoms suggest what I need to do to properly adjust my gears? Thanks in advance.
