These Sonatas by Brahms are the best and most important Compositions in this genre conceived in the second half of the ' 800, because of their spiritual character, the grandeur of the conception, the orchestra- like pianism, and the trascendental breath they contain. From the nordic inspiration of the first to the dark character of the second, towards the magnificence of the third one, in five movements. Very good renditions, from the three pianists, full of passion but also very focussed on the difficult introverted message these marvellous Sonatas have been conceived for. Thanks to Brilliant.

Well, I' m with you, about the genre, and the Liszt ' s One is among the best Musical Compositions ( and not only Sonatas...) of all time. But the date of publication it is not to be intended in such a strict way...; ) I was referring only to Sonatas genre ( and i said it at the beginning, nevertheless obviously the shorter pieces by Brahms are among his absolute masterpieces...) and, if you really love Brahms well...it is known that Brahms was not so happy with Liszt' s Sonata in B minor at its first listening...; ) Brahms' Ones are more representative of a typical way of composing a Piano Sonata in the second half of that century, and the comparison is to be made with Tchaikowsky' s Sonatas, or Glazunov, the Grieg, and other composers. Liszt' s Sonata is a Masterpiece of its own, characterized by such an original stylistic way that any comparison is of no value.... ; - )

In my youth only the third sonata was ever performed, and it was recorded by Solomon and Clifford Curzon, which is how I came to know it. Julius Katchen later recorded all three, but it was the ground breaking recording by Christian Zimmerman which helped rescue the first two from obscurity.

The first sonata opens with a barely disguised quote from Beethoven's Hammerklavier sonata - was it the young Brahms's announcement that Beethoven's successor had arrived?

Well, Schumann was of that opinion, about Brahms...

Brahms wrote and performed this transcendental set of sonatas when he was 19 years old!! It is a feat which will never be matched again. Not bad for a poor Hamburger boy who tough himself how to play the piano and who grew up surrounded by drunkers and hookers.

Dreams Dreams -- No, not bad at all: You've come a long way, I'm sure, and carved out a life for yourself! (At first, I thought you were referring to Brahms.)

@@steveegallo3384 @Stevee GALLO You did not get my point at all. Let me clarify it to you: Have you ever read about Brahms' life?? Unlike other of his contemporaries who were born into wealthy families, Brahms was a poor boy who had a harsh childhood: when he was in his teens, he needed to play the piano in taverns and in brothels to get money. That must have been hard, mustn't it? Despite those difficult circumstances, he achieved to become a young piano virtuoso who was able to write that marvelous set of piano sonatas when he was only 19 years old. That is remarkable and admirable.

@@dreamsdreams9493 -- You are correct; I missed your point. Would you say that Wagner and Schubert, too, overcame similar obstacles? Not even to mention all the Composers of the Holocaust.....Greetings from San Agustinillo, Oaxaca!

What is it someone said? Psychology tells how we came to be the way we are; character is what we do about it. Our beloved Brahms certainly had character.

@@richardbernard1839 -- Well-said, although I think that it's YOUR formulation! Even so, Could not the same axiom be applied with equal force to, say, Brecht? “Wildsäue haben sich in mir begattet. Raben des milchigen Himmels oft in mich gepißt.” “Wild pigs paired in me. From the milky heavens / The ravens often pissed right into me.” Otherwise translated: “….In me, out of milky skies, ravens have pissed.” [Brecht - EXERZITIEN 13 (118), “Manual of Piety, Die Hauspostille”] Greetings from San Agustinillo!

Great performances and clean recordings of these sonatas...I didn’t know Brahms was only 19 when he performed them. In any case, thanks for the posting and the comments they have generated. Hey, as an aside, has anyone out there listened to Simeon ten Holt’s solo piano work? I’ve been studying the score of Soloduiveldans II and IV played by Jeroen van Veen. His solo performance of Canto Ostinato is also worthy of consideration.
