Oh, my. Master Kempff's playing is so precise, I find myself holding my breath. What control of phrasing, length of notes, the pedal!! It would take me a lifetime to achieve this sound, let alone master all 32 sonatas as he did.

Kempff , Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor "Pathétique", Op. 13 ... His performance of this Sonata especially, is not to be missed. It is arguably the finest performance of this sonata, within the recording era. His performances in general are always among my favorites for Beethoven however, even when not my very favorite. Such as Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor "Moonlight", Op. 27, No. 2, for which I hail Philippe Entremont as undisputedly masterful, in my humble opinion.

😇🍾🥂 Extraordinary! I never thought I should see such a miraculous treat and resource as this. I was listening to Wilhelm Kempff recently (playing a Schubert Impromptu - but no matter; for the same applies) and I realised that Kempff considers all the options that lesser pianists present as their final word... and then he thinks, "No, that's too obvious. Let me find something more subtle, more organic, more cohesive, more natural, more...spontaneous? No. But more seemingly spontaneous? Oh yes". This is the wisdom of great musical minds: making us feel as if we have grasped what they have to tell us for a lifetime, and yet it seems so new - so fresh - that it is as if we ourselves had been born afresh. The scales have fallen from our eyes. Kempff is peerless. Buy you a coffee? If I could, I'd take the money the BBC in Britain demands from me each year for the privilege of owning a television, and I'd give it all to people like you.

Wilhelm Kempff has been criticised for his playing of Beethoven. "Beethoven must be played without emotion" seems to be this consensus. Of course, this is nonsense. His playing is subtle and careful, but listening to them all shows that he performs as expressively as any other. Some recordings never go out of date!

I was friends with a minor concert pianist who mixed with major concert pianists. He said that, if they are to give a performance they obviously practice with the music in front of them. Only then do they perform. I remember early performances of Kempff, and he was said to perform with music open, which I notice is becoming increasingly common.

Thanks, I had a hard time finding the 31st one. Seeing it laid out in sheet music helped me find it more easily.

If you realize, Liszt was inspired by the beginning of the 4th movement of the pastoral sonata. I mean in his Pastorale of the Annees de pelerinage I he uses the same theme

Andorsagi--You're forgetting one thing, that musicians eat, too. So, maybe not all...but I know what you mean. I might change the word 'free' to 'heard'. Then again, not all.🥸

fantastic This is probably the slowest I've heard a recording of the fourth movement of the 12th Sonata and it still sounds wonderful. Others tend to fly through it and it made me think I'd never get it fast enough, but if I can make it sound more like this it gives me hope :)

Piano mavens insist that Kempff’s 1950s mono set is more spontaneous and even better recorded than this cycle from the early ‘60s. With all respect, that opinion took hold when the mono box was hard to find . There are collectors who always prefer elusive discs. When DG made both sets widely available it seemed clear to me that Kempff in the early ‘50s was often flinty and lacking stature. The German critic Joachim Kaiser agreed. If you want spontaneous Kempff look for his ‘30s discs on Dante or APR. For Kempff in his Goethe phase - lofty but lighthearted, the Goethe of Hesse in Steppenwolf - live with these. And they don’t lack drama; compare this Waldstein and Arrau’s. With the anguished Chilean there is doubt the sun will ever rise again. Kempff is always suffused with light. Different as they were Arrau embraced Kempff. I do too. Thanks so much for posting with the scores and timings. What a gift in these benighted times.
