Bravo !!!

Very nice music, indeed! Wonderful to listen to. But what about this painting? The bucolic scene was painted in the 17th century by Claude Lorrain. We see a man playing a violin and another figure herding cattle. A peaceful, sunny day in the country certainly compliments the music. BUT WAIT-THERE'S MORE! As was the tradition at the time, landscape paintings like this sometimes depicted Greek and Roman ruins or myths disguised in the form of contemporary 17th figures (see also works by N. Poussin). The underlying Greek story here is Apollo (the violin is a symbolic stand-in for his lyre) sitting and mourning the recent loss of his wife. Meanwhile, younger brother Hermes (supposedly an infant in the myth) makes off with cattle that Apollo is supposed to be watching for King Admetus. Apollo finally discovers the cattle are missing. He thinks brother Hermes has tricked him. So he gets Zeus to force Hermes to return the cattle. After the cattle are returned to Apollo's safe keeping, the two brothers reconcile. Hermes then presents Apollo with a lyre, a musical instrument Hermes invented AFTER abducting the cattle! The fact that Apollo is shown with his "lyre" before the abduction is even completed probably did not matter to Claude. It was more important that Apollo be depicted with a musical instrument, as befit the god of music. None of this has anything inherently to do with Locatelli or his music; I'm sure the record label chose this painting for its thematic content.

Pietro Locatelli, born in Bergamo on September 3, 1695. Violinist. Student of Corelli in Rome. Almost everything in your life is ignored; he seems to traveled a lot, before settling in Amsterdam, where he gave public concerts with some regularity. In his concerts and sonatas he perpetuates(with less genius) the great tradition of his master; but in his whims he is concerned with musical virtuosity with an extravagance that foreshadows Paganini. His main works are: concertos grossi, concertos for four, theatrical introductions, sonatas for flute and violin, etc. He died in Amsterdam on March30, 1764. Your music has greT elegance and grace. Although he doesn’t have the genius of Vivaldi, Corelli or Tartini, for example, the music he produces is excellent and remarkable in its subtlety and perfection, although he prefers a musical line, as already mentioned, of greater virtuosity and extravagance . Thanks for this recording that gives us lot of time of great pleasure.

Some great music here; some not so great. I find some of the cadenzas a chore to listen through - they often sound like technical exercises rather than concert music. Nice to see a fair bit of early 18th Century plagiarism and borrowing too, that's assuming the other composers weren't the plagiarists! A very welcome release all the same.

I've always liked Locatelli, but never really sat down and listened to him for a long stretch, and so totally underappreciated him. He was way ahead of his time with much of the phrasing and structure we hear in these works. Many of which have whole passages that prefigure Rococo, Classical, and even Romantic-era works. In some places, it was almost as if hearing Beethoven or Mendelssohn "imitating" the Baroque style. many thanks for this eye-opening -- er, I mean, "ear-opening" -- experience!

@@nandotroyani5218 He was slightly later than Vivaldi, and while his "high Baroque" stylings are typical of his older compatriot, what I like are the occasional phrasings, partial phrasings, and shadings that speak of styles that were nascent or even just over the horizon. Masterful!

The great Vivaldi never composed cadenzas as magnificent as the ones here, which were written down by Locatelli, according to the background notes supplied by Brilliant Classics (above). Also, as far as I can tell, Locatelli didn't repeat himself as often as Vivaldi did. We should not necessarily fault Vivaldi for this. As Headmaster and Chief Music Instructor of a school for orphan girls it's amazing that he had time to write as much music as he did, all of which is First Rate and much of which is outstanding. (Those girls must have really been great musicians, considering that they were usually the first ones to play the music composed by their brilliant maestro.)
