The comparison of Mozart and Beethoven on the art of the thema and variations, suggested in the description section, is very interesting. Although it’s difficult to generalize, there is a difference in general approach, it seems to me. Both reveal the essence and beauty of a theme through variations elaboration. For me, Mozart is like holding a jewel to the light and revealing the many facets. With Beethoven, some variations seem to transform into an entirely new essence.

Very astute analysis of the difference in theme development between these two pillars of classical. As a pianist, I initially disliked Mozart because his music seemed not to take a discernible direction, whereas Beethoven to my ear is definitely going from point A to point B and all the genius and embellishment, ornamental figures, and flourishes are subordinate to the arrival at a destination. I used to have an excellent bust of Mozart but gave it to Goodwill, now I regret it since I have evolved to appreciate Wolfgang.

@@DynamicMateTV Is it because Mozart expresses himself more freely in these pieces? I certainly find that compared to some of his more famous works. But I think he's most expressive in his concertos, which totally blow me away

They're lesser known because they're not very good. Not everything written by even a great composer is necessarily brilliant. Bear in mind that they were writing to order so some work would inevitably be substandard

Mozart used the structure of theme and variations very extensively and in far more pieces than those listed here, including piano pieces (the famous K311 comes to mind). Off the top of my head, I know he uses it in a couple of slow movements of his piano concertos, and memorably in the last movement of his C minor piano concerto. There's also a beautiful if haunting set that makes up the last movement of his D minor Haydn quartet.
@vrlarsen12 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, I don't believe Mozart used the structure of theme and variations with any of his middle or late symphonies. Let me know if he did! Have you ever listened to any of the piano & violin sonatas? He wrote at least four movements of theme and variations for as many sonatas, I believe: Sonata in A K.305 (3rd movement), Sonata in G K.379 (2nd movement), Sonata in F K.377 (2nd movement), and Sonata in F K. 547 (3rd movement). They are absolutely fabulous!
@ghostofyeats2 жыл бұрын
@@vrlarsen1 I think you're right, I'm not aware of Mozart having used theme and variations in his middle or late symphonies. I have listened to some of the violin sonatas and they are indeed gorgeous! My favorite though is K. 526 (which doesn't use the variations form). I especially love the middle movement, it creates an incredible feeling.

it's curious you mention Moriz Rosenthal as an American, because he was born and studied in Kiev, and has been Liszt's pupil...thus, he only afterwards crossed over the Ocean... Rosen was his pupil : American, of course, but as Rosenthal's pupil and a pianist, somehow european. Serkin as an Austrian whose father was Russian, he studied in Wien and in Berlin and left Germany due to nazism... then, Chodack is an American, but whose parents are Russian emigrants and later, Chodack came and settled in Paris, for the rest of his live : is he French ?
