Each adagio has its gorgeous melody that seems to recur over and over, with various styles. As I compare them, I interpret them as a 'fight to get its aim. Each to me seems to be a 'fight' for the same ultimate aim, to get to its own mighty crescendo, constantly 'falling back' with beautiful intricate melodies, until his 'gaol" is achieved. I have an ultimate favourite, and that is the 7th. It takes time to reach that aim, and the beautiful Harps become stronger and stronger, perfectly echoing their way up, stronger and stronger, standing out in such a harmonious haunting manner. When we move onto the 7th. I think "here we go"! David 😢

I love your Adagios albums. I'd love to see a collection of Ralph Vaughan Williams adagios. There is a long list of great ones, some very well known, others not so well known, in part because some of his compositions have only recently seen the light of day. They are in all types of his compositions - symphonies, his piano concerto, the cello version of his tuba concerto, and many other pieces. Most labels record about 10 of his most famous works - we don't need those duplicates.

@abbassaada95484 жыл бұрын
Bruckner's adagios are broad in scope and achingly soul-searching and totally incomparable with any other ones from any other composer. Unique, majestic, and introspective and above all lyrical. By contrast, Mahler's adagios are meandering and instantly forgettable. I can hum Bruckner's adagios all day. The themes are easily recallable. Try doing that with Mahler. You will be stumped. Bruckner is the greatest symphonist only after Beethoven.
@Balfour.3 жыл бұрын
Sorting out music quality solely based on your humming capacities speaks more about your limited and precarious musical approach than about Mahler's music itself.
@thetruth4953 жыл бұрын
Bruckner's greatest adagios are of the 7th and 8th symphonies. The others don't really match up to these - Bruckner matured as composer only in late middle age, unfortunately. Had he lived another ten years he could have created more masterpieces. You can't deny that Mahler's Adagietto from the 5th symphony is delightful but I agree that his other slow movements are not of that quality. I don't agree that Bruckner is the greatest symphonist after Beethoven, I would say Brahms deserves that accolade; Bruckner's symphonies are more like symphonic poems.
@MartinoCoceani3 жыл бұрын
You're trying to talk about adagios with the same criteria as modern songs. An adagio is not a song to hum in the shower. In any case, try to listen to the last movement of Mahler's third symphony, you'll see that you will change your mind
