Just me missing the weekly town market after I moved back to the US. People want the convenience of having everything they need in one place (supermarkets), but supermarkets are repetitive, bland, and detached. Here's the case for the marketplace.

As a German, I am very happy that we have our markets - twice a week even, Wednesday and Saturday, there's a market in the centre of town with local produce to buy. EDIT: fun fact: Trader Joe's is owned by a German supermarket chain, Aldi Nord. They do the same thing in the US which their parent company does in Germany and elsewhere in the world.

Admittedly I always hated farmer’s markets when I was growing up. My parents did the shopping and I was forced to tag along. It was also in Arizona which has a ton of sprawl, so the trips were made via car and Arizona is so unbelievably hot. These days I don’t go to any farmer’s markets. There is one in my town, but lately the majority of my meals have been done through services like hello fresh; with anything in between being junk food kinds of snacks delivered from a supermarket. I do respect and want more farmer’s markets. But being honest I don’t see a way they could be involved my own everyday life with the diet I have. Only thing I could really benefit from is conveniently buying some fresh fruit, I do want to buy lots of lemons some time soon.

Hello, I've enjoyed your Jane Jacobs series. I have a (hypothetical) question. If there were a plan/idea to build a brand new sustainable city, that has the best public transit possible in the world. That uses completely renewable energy to power the city. Would you like to be a part of the plan and contribute in helping build that plan to reality.

Thanks for watching! I think building brand new cities comes along with certain challenges, but given that my full time job is in the renewable energy / energy efficiency field and I previously worked in transportation, that would surely be something I'd be interested in.

@@optimicities Over the past year I have been creating a plan for one such city. Would you be open to discuss about this?
